Werner Klemperer
Werner Klemperer was a classically trained, Jewish actor who played Colonel Wilhelm Klink in the TV series Hogan's Heroes, winning two Emmys for the role. Hogan's Heroes was loosely based on Billy Wilder's 1953 movie Stalag 17 and ran from 1965 to 1971. Klemperer, citing his Jewish heritage, was sensitive to criticism from those who thought that comedy in a Nazi prisoner-of-war camp was tasteless, and only agreed to play Klink if he could portray him as a fool who lived in terror of his superiors and was constantly outwitted by the prisoners. Klemperer appears as Klink on the left in this publicity photo. Bob Crane (center) played Col. Hogan and John Banner (left) played Sgt. Schultz. Klemperer was born in Cologne, Germany on 22 March, 1920. He was the son of noted German conductor Otto Klemperer who fled Germany with his family in 1935, two years after Adolf Hitler came to power. Werner made his stage debut in the 1940 production of 'The Trojan Horse' opposite Jeff Chandler and then served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his discharge, he made his Broadway debut in 'Heads or Tails' (1947) and was featured with Tallulah Bankhead in 'Dear Charles' (1955). While continuing his work as a stage actor, Klemperer also appeared in a number of movies, most notably in Stanley Kramer's 1961 film 'Judgment at Nuremberg'. Klemperer also appeared in 'Houseboat' (1958), 'Youngblood Hawk' (1964), and 'Ship of Fools' (1965). He was then cast as Col. Klink in 1965 and, in the years after the cancellation of Hogan's Heroes, continued to work steadily . Klemperer died on December 7, 2000 in New York. He was 80.

On the right, from Hogan's Heroes! NEW YORK (AP) - Werner Klemperer, a Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany who went on to play the inept German prison-camp commandant Col. Klink on TV's ``Hogan's Heroes,'' died of cancer Wendesday. He was 80. Klemperer fled Germany in 1935 with his father, Otto, a distinguished conductor and composer. He won two Emmy Awards for his portrayal of the monocled Col. Wilhelm Klink on the 1960s sitcom about World War II Allied prisoners of war. Klemperer had his own condition for playing the part: ``If ever a segment was written where Col. Klink is the winner, I would leave the show,'' he told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette last year. He was a gifted actor on both film and stage, receiving a Tony nomination in 1988 as a feature actor in a musical for his role in Hal Prince's revival of ``Cabaret.'' Other Broadway roles included starring opposite Jose Ferrer in ``The Insect Comedy,'' and with Tallulah Bankhead in the 1955 production of ``Dear Charles.'' Most recently, he co-starred in Circle in the Square's production of Chekhov's ``Uncle Vanya.'' His film credits included ``Death of a Scoundrel,'' ``The Goddess,'' ``Judgment at Nuremberg,'' and ``Ship of Fools.''

But for 15-yr.-old Werner, who was greeted at the station with his sister and mother by a chauffeur-driven limosine and whisked away to a home in Bel-Air, "it was like fairyland." more H e'd been told only that he'd be reading for the part of the commandant of a POW camp. Klemperer was stunned when he saw the script. Perhaps out of concern that this serious actor would reject such a part, no one had said anything about comedy. more B y the time Hogan's Heroes ended in 1971, Klemperer had made his mark so distinctively as to emerge forever from the shadow of his famous great conductor father. Werner Klemperer, 1920-2000 Award winning character actor, conductor and narrator Werner Klemperer, best known for his 175 episodes as Colonel Klink on the 1960s television series "Hogan's Heroes", died in New York City on December 6th, 2000. The son of a famed conductor, the Jewish born Klemperer came to America as a refugee of Nazi persecution . The oldest of 2 children born to conductor Otto Klemperer, Werner Klemperer was born on March 22nd, 1920 in Cologne, Germany. With his younger sister Lotte, Klemperer received an extensive education in music and traveled throughout Europe as a child as the family followed his father's career to the great culture centers of the world. By 1933, the Klemperer's were finding few safe places in their homeland as the Nazi party rose to power and Jews, especially those of high prominence, were being persecuted. The Klemperers fled Germany, finally arriving in Los Angeles California where Otto Klemperer accepted the role of conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Werner Klemperer completed high school and joined the Pasadena Playhouse workshop where he studied acting and made his debut in a production of "The Trojan Horse." Klemperer accepted the role of Colonel Klink with the contract stipulation that if at any time the series allowed the Nazis to come out ahead of their captives or Klink be portrayed as a "good guy", he could quit the show unconditionally. Between 1965 and 1971, Colonel Klink was stymied, sabotaged, and stupefied by his Allied prisoners for 175 episodes, and Werner Klemperer earned 2 Emmy Awards for his work in the series, as Best Supporting Actor. The show continued almost with out interruption for 3 decades in syndicated reruns, and Klemperer continued to get fan mail for his role until his death.

Cologne Opera House during Otto Klemperer's tenure Otto Klemperer
When your father's a musical institution, music is your mother-tongue. There were piano lessons with Karl Ulrich Schnabel (son of Artur), trumpet and violin lessons (the latter, briefly, with Hindemith); visitors to the house of the likes of Kurt Weill and Stravinsky; and study, always study. A highlight was a rehearsal of Falstaff which Werner was allowed to attend. It so impressed him that in later years, when feeling out of sorts, he need only hear a recording for his good humor to return. But such diversions were rare for Werner and his younger sister Lotte, who were never permitted to attend an actual Kroll performance. "You know, there was obviously a little activity in Berlin," he recalled some years later, "but we weren't allowed to participate."
Ordinarily, altar boys don't experience bar mitvehs. But Werner's 13th birthday was marked by a rite of passage resulting from his Jewish heritage nonetheless. By March, 1933, Otto Klemperer had already endured the closing of the Kroll and at least two attempts on his life (including a fall into the orchestra pit which left him unconscious when a railing "accidentally" gave way). On 23 March, Klemperer's Kroll became Hitler's headquarters; Berlin's bastion of artistic freedom was the site where the Enabling Act was signed which took all freedoms away. When a prominent physician mysteriously "disappeared" for no reason other than being Jewish, Otto Klemperer realized the full danger of his and his family's situation. Soon after he departed for Switzerland, where his family quickly joined him with only the possessions they could inconspicuously carry away.
