It was at Locarno in 1989 that the Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami was honored for the first time in the West when he received the Bronze Leopard for Khaneh-ye doust kojast? (Where Is My Friend's House?) . A member of the Locarno jury the following year, Kiarostami introduced Piazza Grande audiences to his Nema-ye nazdik (Close-up) . In 1992, the Critics' Week screened Va Zendegi edameh darad (Life and Nothing More) Zir-e Derakhtan-e-zeytun (Through the Olive Trees) was shown on the Piazza Grande. But his work is far more than these three now-famous films. Painter, graphic artist photographer, scriptwriter and publicity filmmaker, Kiarostami has to date directed 12 feature films and nearly as many shorts which, for the most part, have not yet been seen in the West. It was therefore in the nature of things that the Locarno Film Festival present his complete works for the first time, in collaboration with the Farabi Cinema Foundation and other Iranian film institutions. Abbas Kiarostami Fotografie Il cielo azzurro, intenso, fortissimo. La terra sottostante è marrone; quasi si riesce a percepirne l’odore e la consistenza. Un prato verde da cui si erge un albero molto ampio. Le pareti di due colline che si intrecciano anche grazie ad un raffinato gioco di ombre. Distese sinuose e morbide, probabilmente coltivate. Un grosso albero secco posto su una zona desertica. Immagini in cui la presenza degli esseri umani si avverte appena e in cui trionfa un elemento contenutistico decisivo: lo straordinario e geometrico equilibrio delle forme e dei colori del pianeta. Film Producer, Director, Screen Writer Abbas Kiarostami bbas Kiarostami was born on June 22nd 1940 in Tehran, he was interested in the arts from an early age. He won a painting competition at the age of eighteen, and left home to study at Tehran University's Faculty of Fine Arts. As a designer and illustrator, Kiarostami worked throughout the '60s in advertising, making commercials, designing posters, creating credit titles for films, and illustrating children's books. In 1969 Kiarostami helped to set up a filmmaking department at the Institute for Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults. The department's debut production was Kiarostami's own first film, the twelve-minute Bread and Alley (Naan va Koche), a charming, neo-realist is about a small boy's perilous walk home from school. The department would go on to become one of Iran's most famous film studios, producing not only Kiarostami's films, but also such modern Iranian classics as The Runner and Bashu, the Little Stranger. Though Kiarostami's films have been compared at various times to those of Satyajit Ray, Vittorio de Sica, Eric Rohmer, or Jacques Tati, they remain uniquely Kiarostamian. Effortlessly simple and conceptually complex in equal measure; poetic, lyrical, meditative, self-reflexive and increasingly sophisticated, they mix fiction and documentary in unique ways, often presenting fact as fiction and fiction as fact.

The screening's special, out-of-competition status was equally appropriate, given that Kiarostami has said he no longer wishes to enter his films into competitions. However, this was not "ABC Africa'"s world premiere. Kiarostami attended the premiere in Durham, as well as a festival-long retrospective of his earlier works.
