    Analysis
Analyze what you save from the points of view of Csikszentmihalyi, Keller, and Malone and Lepper. What does each approach tell you about this particular game and the player's reaction to it? Was each theory equally useful in this particular case?
Amy's experience with "Abuse" pointed to several common themes in the work of Csikszentmihalyi, Keller, and Malone and Lepper; most notably the importance of giving the user a specific set of goals, providing feedback to the user on the attainment of goals, and presenting a sufficient level of challenge to the user. For Amy, the goals and subgoals of "Abuse" were very clear: kill or be killed, and save the human race. Interestingly, the communication of those player goals through a narrative text introduction accomplished the designer's goals of arousing the player's attention. Amy responded positively to the dramatic "A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away..." cinematic-style opening. (Conveniently, for repeat players, one can click through the intro.) However, beyond the immediate allure of sound and graphics, it is the computer's ability to sustain attention through constant feedback and realistic challenge that makes it such a rich gaming platform. In particular, "Abuse's" multiple feedback channels played instrumental roles in maintaining Amy's interest in the game during the most difficult moments.
