More Showbiz headlines Thursday, January 30, 1997 Amy loves the grumpy old imp By BRUCE KIRKLAND Toronto Sun HOLLYWOOD Apparently, you just haven't lived it up as an actress until you've boogied down on a movie set with the grumpy old imp himself, Walter Matthau. Just ask Amy Irving, who plays Matthau's exasperated but loving daughter in the current film I'm Not Rappaport. The ancient Matthau is, says the fortysomething Irving, "as horny as a devil which always keeps that little spark going inside of a gal! Although, with the father-daughter team (in the movie story) it got confusing once in a while!" Irving, the former wife of Hollywood mogul Steven Spielberg, is now wife to Brazilian filmmaker Bruno Barreto, who directed Irving in the sexually-explosive film Carried Away. But she makes no secret of her fondness and immense respect for Matthau. Which made it difficult for her to take him to task in the movie itself. "It's hard to do because he's just so lovable. I mean, he's the most lovable actor I think I've ever worked with in my life. He's got so much talent. I think people don't even realize how talented he is, sometimes, because he makes it look so easy. What he does is hard. He's brilliant. I'm just in awe of him. And he's also generous." Case in point. For another scene in I'm Not Rappaport, Irving is supposed to laugh heartily. Matthau made sure she did, by acting the fool off camera. Matthau dropped his pants to prance around half naked in New York's Central Park. | |
