Hitchcock and "Eggs". In one of his films, I'm not sure which, the lead actress walks into a man's apartment, and on the stove in a frying pan is a sunny-side-up egg. The actress who is smoking, extinguishes her cigarette right in the yoke of the egg. Sure, it seems trivial, but what you might not know and what they don't teach in film school or documentaries is that Hitchcock's father was a life-long poulterer, and by the end of Hitch's adolescence, he grew to hate the look, smell, shape, and anything to do with eggs, even though in his late years he took on the physique of an egg! Granted, you can call it trivia or a short biography, but it pertains to eggs doesn't it? All this, and I'm only a 24 year old filmmaker/passionist for the medium as a whole. Bye Bye!

Gus Van Sant's Botched Taxidermy Job
Those of you out
there (who know me) know I'm not such a Hitchcock "purist" that I shun
everything out there in the suspense genre, lest it be directed by the
Master himself. I have touted the virtues of many a homage to Hitch or
even downright imitations, from "Charade," "Mirage," "The Spanish
Prisoner," "Obsession," "High Anxiety," "True Lies," "The Bride Wore
Black," "Cape Fear" (1962 Version, of course) and "Sea of Love" to Hitchcock-influenced films such as"Carlito's Way," "Goldfinger," "Taxi Driver" and "Gattaca." However, this so-called "remake" from Gus Van Sant is an abomination.
The acting is worse than the High School for the Deaf Thespian Troupe;
no costumes by Rita Riggs or Edith Head - I think they were picked out by a blind man walking through the Salvation Army thrift shop. The movie has been printed on color film: That makes a whole lot of sense for showcasing the film's star, the chalky and pasty Anne Heche who

Photographed in somber shadows, few movies before or since have taken such glorious advantage of black-and-white film. She (Joan Fontaine) meets the enigmatic and temperamental Maxim DeWinter (Laurence Olivier) in Monte Carlo, and on a whim marries him. We never learn her name: Maxim calls her "dear" or "darling," and to others she is simply Mrs. DeWinter or, to distinguish her from Rebecca, her husband's first wife, the second Mrs. DeWinter. He takes her home to foggy, rainy Cornwall, where he owns Manderley, a rambling country manor house that's as much as a character in the film as any of its human inhabitants. A meek little mouse, "dull and gauche and inexperienced," as she terms herself, she is awkward and uncomfortable in the big house with its army of servants. Worse, the ghost of Rebecca is everywhere not an actual spirit, but reminders of the first Mrs. DeWinter. Her initials are emblazoned on napkins, handkerchiefs, stationery. Her grieving dog Jasper sits outside Rebecca's bedroom in the mysterious and off-limits west wing. "She knew everyone that mattered, and everyone loved her," says Mrs. Danvers, the creepy housemaid who came to Manderley when Rebecca was a new bride, who is trying desperately to make the second Mrs. DeWinter feel unwanted. Her husband, whom she barely knows, seems to be withdrawing from her, avoiding her. The new Mrs. DeWinter grows nervous and suspicious: Did he have something to do with his first wife's untimely death?

    Alfred Joseph Hitchcock was born in Leytonstone in East London, the youngest son of William andEmma Whelan Hitchcock. He was raised in a strict, Irish Catholic family and was educated at theJesuits’ St. Ignatius College. At only 16 years of age, he left to study engineering and navigation atthe University of London. Three years later, he was hired as an estimator at Henley TelegraphCompany. Hitchcock soon developed an interest in art and studied it in the evenings. He would eventually transfer to the advertising department of the company. He always had a keeninterest in cinema and followed industry news closely. After Paramount opened a studio in London,he applied for a job and was hired as a title designer for silent films. He would eventually work hisway up to assistant director, where he got some much needed experience in the art of film making. He got his break in 1922 with the film Number 13 . The film was never completed, but it wasn't all badnews for Hitchcock; he met his future wife Alam Reville during the making. She would work with him on all of his future projects, in the pre and post-production phases of his films. Hitch made his full directorial debut with
