A museum has been established in Smithfield, North Carolina for an extensive collection of artifacts spanning Ava Gardner's career in movies and her private life. This collection represents, largely, the efforts of one Tom Banks who at the age of 12 years was kissed on the cheek by a young girl attending secretarial school in Wilson, NC. Two years later in 1941, Tom Banks opened a newspaper and saw a photo of Ava and learned her identity for the first time. In the years following, he and his wife devoted much of their lives to following Ava's career and assembling memorabilia from every imaginable source. In the early '80's Dr. Banks purchased the house where Ava lived from age 2 to 13, and operated his own Ava Museum during summers for nine years. Dr. Banks suffered a stroke at the museum in August of 1989 and died a few days later. Ava died 5 months later on January 25, 1990. In the summer of 1990, Mrs. Banks donated the collection to the Town of Smithfield being assured that a permanent museum would be maintained in Johnston County, the birthplace and final resting place for AVA LAVINIA GARDNER Born: Dec. 24, 1922

AVA GARDNER The Most Beautiful Actress in Hollywood History! Ava Lavinia Gardner came into this world on December 24, 1922 in a little southern town of Grabtown, North Carolina. Born to a farmer and his wife, Ava grew up on a tobacco farm deep in burley country of North Carolina. She was the last of seven children and being from a large family, the clan was dirt poor because farming was tough in the 20's and 30's, especially with so many mouths to feed. Being a rural farm girl, Ava loved going barefoot and playing with the boys. By the time she was 18 years old, her beauty was already apparent. Her brother-in-law ran a photography studio in New York, where he put a photo of Ava in the window. Someone with MGM saw it and made inquiries as to who it was. One thing led to another and Ava was signed to a contract. Her first 17 roles were with bit parts with WE WERE DANCING being her first picture in 1942. That year would prove somewhat busy for a bit part actress with appearances in also THIS TIME FOR KEEPS, SUNDAY PUNCH, and REUNION IN FRANCE. This included a line or two and that was it. Ava, no doubt, wondered when her "big break" would come.

Su rol fue ascendiendo en preponderancia y así su nombre aparecería más alto en los créditos en títulos como "Three men in white" (1944) y "She went to the races", ambos del realizador Willis Goldbeck.
