In 1975, Franken was part of the original writing staff that created the groundbreaking late night show. Franken remained with the original show until 1980 and then returned in 1985. He stayed for another 10 years, leaving after the 1994-95 season. Franken received four Emmys for his writing on SNL and a fifth for producing. He also won recognition for his on-camera work, first as half of the comedy team of "Franken and Davis", then for his "Al Franken Decade" persona. He also was recognized for such characterizations as the one-man mobile uplink unit and Stuart Smalley, the new age cable TV host. Smalley was the subject of Franken's first book, I'm Good Enough, I'm Smart Enough and Doggone It, People Like Me , which was published in 1992. It provided the basis for a movie that Franken wrote and starred in for Paramount Pictures. The 1995 movie, "Stuart Saves His Family", was directed by Harold Ramis and received "two thumbs up" from Siskel and Ebert.

By Eric Hananoki, Al Franken Web Al Franken was born on May 21, 1951. Originally born in New York City, his family moved to a small, southern Minnesota town, Albert Lea, where his father opened a quilting factory. Despite his father's best efforts, the venture eventually failed. At the age of 6, Franken moved to the city of Minneapolis, where he spent most of his adolescence. Here, he lived in a district known as "St. Louis Park," but was also known as "St. Jewish Park." Franken's father worked as a printing salesman while his mother became a realtor. Growing up, Franken was initially a Republican, following in his father's footsteps, who supported men like Herbert Hoover, Alf Landon and Thomas Dewey. However, in the wake of the '60s civil rights movement and Barry Goldwater's staunch opposition to civil rights, Al and his father changed party affiliation. From that time on, both Frankens considered themselves Democrats. Al Franken began comedy at an early age. While a second grader, Franken watched in horror as a group of girl classmates performed a silly, second grade skit. Seizing the moment, Franken teamed with his boy classmates and wrote a skit mocking the girls. It left his female classmates in tears. In high school, Franken performed well academically, maintaining an "A" average and participating on his high school wrestling team. He was accepted to Harvard University. During this time, Franken also performed stand-up comedy and stage shows with his partner, Tom Davis, a long-time friend from Minnesota.

This is a hilarious "campaign diary" kept by Franken during his fictitious run for the presidency in 2000. Franken portrays himself as incredibly ignorant, overbearing and sexist as he comes up with a series of slapstick plots along the campaign trail to build up support. In fact, the sexist "cheat-on-my-wife, splurge-on-a-hooker, hire-the-girl-who-took-her-shirt-off" bit may wear a bit thin on you after a while, as with the frequent explicit profanity, but I personally thought it was funny as hell. Lots of absolutely biting satire about the primaries, campaign finance corruption, media spin, public relations, etc. If you've even seen Franken on C-Span speaking to the Press Club or some such, then you know what to expect here. Wednesday March 19, 2003 - The Quiet American Director Phillip Noyce frames The Quiet American as a mystery, sort of a “Who is the real Alden Pyle”, which distracts from the film’s main subject: Fowler’s troubled soul. The Brit begins as a static figure, the narrator through whose eyes we meet the other characters, but at about the midway point, we are pulled away from him and forced to study his reasons for being in Saigon. With each passing scene he becomes more pitiable, yet also more intriguing. To play Fowler, Michael Caine uses each inch of his body; from gaze to grin to body language, his performance is note perfect. He sinks into the role of Fowler with ease, and he forces us to pay attention. Which is welcome, because Noyce tries repeatedly to ruin the film. Noyce has slogged through forgettable Hollywood fare like Clear and Present Danger and The Bone Collector for years, and there is a reason it took him so long to break out into the more “respectable” realm of the epic military drama: he isn’t a good director. He ruins several of The Quiet American’s climactic moments with unneeded slow motion and reaction shots. In the film’s one explosive scene, Pyle’s defining moment, Noyce chooses to skip the payoff, only to show it in flashback one scene later. He never equals the strength of Christopher Hampton’s screenplay, repeatedly ruining the man’s wonderful words and disengaging the audience from the whole process. But at least the film is beautiful.
