page 1 of BY HOWARD MANDELBAUM Bette Davis is the exception to every rule. The tin-plated platitudes out of which show-biz bios are fabricated simply don't work. Stars were supposed to be "pretty," but her eyes bulge, her nose droops over thin lips, her breasts sag, her hips spread, and any display of legs would most certainly have hindered the war effort. Female stars were supposed to be "feminine," but Davis thrust raw emotion at audiences without apology, demanding that attention be paid. What's more, during a period in which thought was considered "man's country," Davis created characters who used their heads for more than chapeaux. (Of course, her brainpower tends to be harnessed for selfish schemes rather than for humanity. Unlike Greer Garson, she felt no compulsion to discover radium.) Millions of moviegoers responded to the challenge of her headstrong, neurotic heroines who, like

Known as 'The Fifth Warner Brother,' Bette Davis began in Hollywood with a 6 month Universal Studio contract in 1930. The Studio rep who was to meet her on her arrival at the train station left without Bette, cause he said there was nobody who looked like a movie star. In 1932, Bette signed a 7 year contract with Warner Brothers. Bette married four times and had three children, one of whom was severely retarded. Her daughter B.D. wrote a scandalistic book in 1985 called 'My Mother's Keeper.' In 1977, the American Film Institute presented her with a Lifetime Achievement Award. All About Eve would be my personal choice for her finest performance, but I really want it to be What Ever Happened To Baby Jane. Bette Davis speaking of Joan Crawford: "I wouldn't piss on her if she was on fire." "She's slept with every male star at MGM, except Lassie." Bette Davis
Biography Filmography Awards Article ... THE LITTLE FOXES One of the silver screen's great divas, Bette was nominated for an amazing 10 Best Actress Oscars in the course of her career, many of those for her roles as strong-minded, and frequently disagreeable women.
A poster and still with Leslie Howard in the film that made her a star, Somerset Maugham's OF HUMAN BONDAGE (1934). Bette created a sensation as the cockney waitress who ruins a man's life, and when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences failed to nominate her for a Best Actress Oscar, the public outcry prompted the organization to permit write-in votes that year. (The award finally went to Claudette Colbert for IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT, which swept the Oscars that year.) Although Bette didn't win for OF HUMAN BONDAGE, she did receive her first official Oscar nomination the following year for her role as jinxed actress Joyce Heath in DANGEROUS (1935). This time Bette won the Oscar, but she always regarded it as a consolation prize for her performance the previous year, and thought the 1935 prize should have gone to Katharine Hepburn for ALICE ADAMS.

Bette Davis was an extraordinary talent. Few performers can match her range and achievements as a screen actress. Not beautiful in a conventional sense, she was able to transform herself and make audiences believe she was beautiful. When people hear the name, "Bette Davis", they usually get an image of a nervous, fidgety woman puffing on a cigarette and saying, " What a dump! " I remember her quieter moments, like in Dark Victory when she finds her medical file that says, "prognosis negative", in Jezebel when she nurses Preston, ill with fever, and in Now, Voyager when she comforts a very frightened Tina. THE BETTE DAVIS FOUNDATION Miss Davis' son, Mr. Michael Merrill, and Miss Davis' personal assistant and dear friend, Kathryn Sermak, are now the executors of her estate and have created The Bette Davis Foundation whereby they raise money to give a scholarship to an actor/actress, writer; it must be a student of the arts. They gave the first Bette Davis Lifetime Achievement Award to Meryl Streep in 1998 at Boston University. One of the students from Boston University was the first recipient of the scholarship.

Bette Davis, she was a true Hollywood legend and one of the best actresses of the 20th Century. Her career spanned six decades and more than eighty films. No one was ever like her and no one will ever be again. Even in some of her worst films Miss Davis added "fire and music" to the dullest of scripts.
Intense, volatile, ruled too often by her emotions, Bette Davis was described by one critic as "a force of nature that could find no ordinary outlet."

Welcome to the Kim Carnes Website...
This site was designed to serve as a source of news and useful information about the life and work of Kim Carnes, the multi-talented, Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter best known for the million-selling "Bette Davis Eyes." Although Kim's public profile is not currently as high as it was throughout the 1980s, she has established herself as one of Nashville's premier songwriters, penning hits for Tim McGraw, Reba MacEntire, Vince Gill, Trisha Yearwood, Matraca Berg, Pam Tillis, Lila McCann and others. She continues to perform and record, having contributed tracks to several multi-artist albums over the past several years. Kim is planning to return to the studio sometime in the coming months, and a new album is likely to be released later this year or 2001. As you probably realize, the vast majority of Kim's recordings from the 1970s and 1980s remain unissued on compact disc in the United States and virtually all are out of print in the territories (mostly Japan and Australia) where they have been issued. Original CDs of Kim's EMI America albums regularly sell for hundreds of dollars from rare music dealers and on internet auction sites.

http://my.execpc.com/~reva/html6b4.htm
If one takes a close look at Bette Davis she would seem as unlikely a film star as ever reached stardom. Beauty didn't get her there. Ability did, but talent was not enough. Her long career bears the battle scars of continuing fights with studio heads to get decent roles in worthwhile films with literate scripts and competent craftsmen, both before and behind the cameras.
She survived because of the rare quality that keeps the viewer mesmerized by her performances and fascinated to learn what she will do next, and how she'll do it, even when her material is less than superb. Through sheer force of personality she made us think she's beautiful, she could make us weep for her or make us loathe her. As an actress she courageously ran the gamut of roles and genres, often with great success. Other times she has failed. Charles Laughton once told her, "Never stop daring to hang yourself, Bette!" And she heeded his advice for her entire career.
Bette Davis enthralled several generations of filmgoers in over eighty films. She left us a body of work that will never be forgotten. Below are links to photos to some of her most remembered film roles. Some were hits, and others were flops, but what they all have in common is the spirit of a woman who remained professional and dedicated to her craft. The true meaning of the word, "star."

Tribute to the Silver Screen Classic Actresses
Bette Davis
It would be impossible for me to write an All About Bette in the small amount of space that is provided here. Time and again the question has been asked, who is the greatest actress to ever appear onscreen? The answer seems to sway between Katharine Hepburn and Bette Davis, with a slight edge given to Hepburn. A pity the two actresses never worked together, but in truth, Hepburn was far above Davis, if not as an actress than as a celebrity, and after the early 1940's Davis' comeback never took took, despite All About Eve and Whatever happened to Baby Jane
Davis was spotted on Broadway by a Universal talent scout, and signed almost immediately to a contract. She was not a success at Univeersal, but Warners picked her up, and in 1934 she got a breakthrough as Mildred in Of Human Bondage . In 1935 she took home the Best Actress Oscar for her role in Dangerous , three years later she recieved her second Oscar for Jezebel
The years at Warners following 1938 were her best. She was not beautiful in the sense that Merle Oberon or Greta Garbo or even Miriam Hopkins were beautiful, but there was something about her, she was a pulsating bright light that shined down from the movie screen illuminating the dark theatres.
Davis in Dark Victory Even her costars seemed affected by it. Many of them gave their best performances opposite Bette, as though that glow she eminated rubbed off on them and improved or brought out the best in their work. She would never allow anyone to steal a film, but she was generous to her supporting cast, more generous than any other lead performer was. And so Geraldine Fitzgerald, Celest Holme, Fay Bainter, George Brent, Franchot Tone, George Sanders, and Victor Buono all look far more talented and gifted than they actually were, because they played opposite her at one time.
