Though he participated in many dramatic projects – from Lawrence Olivier's Hamlet (1948) to The End of the Affair (1955) – Cushing is most famous for his many appearances in the Hammer horror films. The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), in which he starred opposite fellow horror legend Christopher Lee , launched his career as a cult icon. He would eventually play some of the most enduring literary characters of all time, among them Dr. Frankenstein, Dracula, and Sherlock Holmes. Cushing died of cancer on August 11, 1994. He was 81.

F ew actors have had such a strong affect on my viewing habits, but Peter Cushing is one such actor. It's difficult to put into words what an actor the caliber of Cushing had in my viewing habits, but it goes without saying that simply seeing his name in the credits of a film is enough to make me want to see it. Peter Cushing was one of those actors who took great pride in the work he did and it shows with each performance. His mere presence in a film was enough to guarantee it being an enjoyable experience on some level. Best known for his association with Hammer Studios from the late 1950's through the mid 1970's, he helped bring the horror genre back from the brink of being considered almost passe` to a force to be reckoned with, again. He's probably best known to the younger generation as the evil, Grand Moff Tarkin, in the fist Star Wars film, but in a career that spanned well over fifty years, his characterizations will not soon be forgotten, from; the irrepressible Baron Frankenstein, the tireless Van Helsing, the quick-witted Sherlcok Holmes and the sympathetic Arthur Grimsdyke, any fan is sure to find some character that they can identify with and enjoy the exploits of. When asked which role is my favorite of Cushing's, I'd be hard-pressed to narrow it down to one, as each role showcased so many talents of this actor, but two characters that I certainly love is, oddly enough, not from Hammer roles

BY JEREMY LUNT P eter Wilton Cushing was born on May 26, 1913, in Kenley, Surry, the son of a quantity surveyor. With several non-immediate family members already working in show business, Peter was soon drawn to the theater, and entertained his relatives with "Punch and Judy" shows. A terrible student by his own admission, he nonetheless excelled in drama, art and sports - basically, anything except major schoolwork. He often indulged himself with comics and model soldiers, and was a big fan of Tom Mix, an American cowboy star. At the age of twenty, his father procured for him a dreary job at the Drawing Office of the Surveyor's Department at the Coulsdon and Purley Urban District Council. Needless to say, he detested it, but managed to hold onto the position for three years, all the while entertaining constant dreams of acting. Finally, he enrolled in the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and received his first stage credit in 1936, a non-speaking role at the Connaught Theater in Worthing. His grandfather had been with Sir Henry Irving and had accompanied himonhis tours of Canada and the United States. His aunt had acted with Gertie Millerand his step-uncle, Wilton Herriot, was a well-known actor in hisday, andhad been one of the principals in "Charley's Aunt".All this wasbefore he was born, however, and when he wanted to go on the stage, hehad to do so through his own efforts. Cushing was brought up in Kenley, a small Surrey village, and was educatedat Shoreham Grammar School and the Purley County Secondary School, wherehe most enjoyed painting lessons, rugger, and amateur theatricals. What should be remembered is that this episode was something of a return to old haunts (sorry!), as he was one of the first actors to have been really made by television. In the days of the BBC as the only channel, when a play would be broadcast live, Cushing was constantly playing lead roles, from Eden End (1951) onwards. It's well known that his performance in Nigel Kneale's controversial adaptation of George Orwell's (1954, alongside another horror habitue, Donald Pleasence) led to his being cast by Hammer in The Curse of Frankenstein . In spite of being an icon of the horror genre, Cushing played romantic leads like Beau Brummel and Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice , and was in The Spread of the Eagle , a chronological staging of Shakespeare's Roman plays. My Peter Cushing Fan Page Peter Cushing: A Biography Born in May of 1914, Peter Cushing devoted himself to acting in the mid-1930s. He soon turned from the stage to film, and left England for the United States in 1937. He quickly gained respect in Hollywood, both as an actor and as a man of great intelligence and integrity. In 1942, Cushing returned to England. Turned down for military service, he instead joined a theatre company that performed at military bases. Cushing came to work with actress Helen Beck, and the two fell deeply in love. They married in 1943. In the early 1950s, Cushing emerged as one of British television's most popular actors. It was in 1956, however, that Cushing guided his career down the path that he is most remembered for. He was cast as Baron Victor Frankenstein in Hammer's adaptation of Mary Shelly's novel, "Frankenstein." He would play the Baron in several sequels, as well as portray Dr. Van Helsing in the Dracula series, and a number of other dashing heroes and scheming villains in 22 films from Hammer over the next 17 years. He also appeared in movies from other studios and returned to British television as Sherlock Holmes. In 1971, Cushing's beloved wife Helen died after a prolonged illness. It was a loss from which he never fully recovered. He threw himself into his work, but spent most private hours dreaming of when he and Helen would be reunited in the hereafter.
