The Carter Family The most influential group in country music history, the Carter Family switched the emphasis from hillbilly instrumentals to vocals, made scores of their songs part of the standard country music canon, and made a style of guitar-playing, "Carter-picking," the dominant technique for decades. Along with Jimmie Rodgers, the Carter Family were one of the first country music stars. Comprised of a gaunt, shy gospel quartet member called Alvin P. Carter and two reserved country girls his wife Sara and their sister-in-law Maybelle the Carter Family sang a pure, simple harmony that influenced not only the numerous other family groups of the '30s and the '40s, but folk, bluegrass and rock musicians like Woody Guthrie, Bill Monroe, the Kingston Trio, Doc Watson, Bob Dylan and Emmylou Harris, to mention just a few. Just as their career was back in full-swing, Sara and A.P.'s marriage fell apart, with the couple divorcing in 1939. Nevertheless, the group continued to perform, remaining in Texas until 1941, when they moved to a radio station in Charlotte, North Carolina. During the early '40s, the band briefly recorded for Columbia before they re-signed with Victor in 1941. Two years later, Sara decided to retire and move out to California with her new husband, Coy Bayes (who was A.P.'s cousin), while A.P. moved back to Virginia, where he ran a country store. Maybelle Carter began recording and touring with her daughters Helen, June and Anita. A.P. and Sara re-formed the Carter Family with their grown children in 1952, performing a concert in Maces Spring. Following the successful concert, the Kentucky-based Acme signed A.P., Sara and their daughter Janette to contract, and over the next four years, they recorded nearly 100 songs that didn't gain much attention at the time. In 1956, the Carter Family disbanded for the second time. Four years later, A.P. died at his Maces Spring home. Following his death, the Carter Family's original recordings began to be reissued. In 1966, Maybelle persuaded Sara to reunite to play a number of folk festivals and record an album for Columbia. The Carter Family became the first group to be elected into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1970, which is a fitting tribute to their immense influence and legacy.

In keeping with the traditional music style, no electrical instruments are allowed (everything is acoustic). There's lots of dancing and fun for the entire family. Shows are family-oriented; no alcohol is permitted at concerts. O nce each year, a two-day (Friday and Saturday) festival takes place the first weekend of August. Festival show times are from 2:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. each day. Mountain craftsmen are on hand to sell their goods, and there's lots of good country cooking going on, too. Although musicians had been recording fiddle tunes (known as Old Time Music at that time) in the southern Appalachians for several years, It wasn't until August 1, 1927 in Bristol, Tennessee, that Country Music really began. There, on that day, Ralph Peer signed Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family to recording contracts for Victor Records. These two recording acts set the tone for those to follow - Rodgers with his unique singing style and the Carters with their extensive recordings of old-time music. Known as the "Father of Country Music," James Charles Rodgers was born in Meridian, Mississippi on September 8, 1897. Always in ill health, he became a railroad hand, until ill health caught up with him and he was forced to seek a less strenuous occupation. An amateur entertainer for many years, he became a serious performer in 1925, appearing in Johnson City, Tennessee and other places. In 1926, Rodgers and Carrie, his wife of 6 years, moved to Asheville, North Carolina, and organized the Jimmie Rodgers' Entertainers, a hillbilly band comprising Jack Pierce (guitar), Jack Grant (mandolin/banjo), Claude Grant (banjo), and Rodgers himself (banjo). Upon hearing that Ralph Peer of Victor Records was setting up a portable recording studio in Bristol, on the Virginia-Tennessee border, the Entertainers headed in that direction. But due to a dispute within their ranks, Rodgers eventually recorded as a solo artist, selecting a sentimental ballad, "The Soldier's Sweetheart," and a lullaby, "Sleep, Baby, Sleep," as his first offerings. The record met with instant acclaim, thus causing Victor to record further Rodgers' sides throughout 1927, including the first in a set of 13, Blue Yodel # 1 (T for Texas)

Born in Wakefield, Ky., in 1908, Carlisle began performing in the late 1920s on a Louisville radio station with his father and other family members as part of the Carlisle Family Saturday Night Barn Dance. This group included his older brother Cliff (1904-1983), who was one of country music's pioneer steel guitar and Dobro players and a popular singer in his own right. In the early '30s, with his brother Cliff's assistance, Carlisle recorded for the ARC label group, where he recorded his first hit, "Rattlesnake Daddy." Eventually Carlisle became as popular as his older brother, with whom he shared a talent for yodeling and a tendency to sing songs filled with risqué double entendres, such as "Copper Head Mama" (1934) and "Jumpin' and Jerkin' Blues" (1935). In the late '30s, he signed with Decca Records and explored various styles of music. Although at times the brothers worked as solo artists, they frequently teamed up to become one of country music's best-known brother duos. The Carlisle Brothers became major radio stars during the Depression, fusing hillbilly, Hawaiian, blues and vaudeville elements into their music and performances. In 1946 they scored their biggest hit as a duo with "Rainbow at Midnight." They toured extensively throughout the Midwest and Southeast and at various times were based in Memphis, Lexington, Charlotte, Atlanta, Shreveport and Asheville before beginning a long association with KNOX radio in Knoxville, Tenn.

The Carter family: pioneer country music singers Nestled in the shadow of Clinch Mountain, in the crossroads hamlet of Maces Spring, Virginia, sits one of the most rustic concert theaters in the world. It is made of rough-cut lumber with sides that swing open on hinges to admit summer breezes. In winter, the entire building is heated by wood and coal-fed iron stoves. The seating is a medley of old chairs taken from abandoned theaters, and discarded church pews. Carpeting consists of remnants and sample squares, in an infinite variety of colors and designs. It looks like the entire building was thrown together from a jumble of second thoughts. Beside the theater is a tiny white clapboard building surrounded by spreading trees. Inside are stacks of ancient 78 rpm phonograph records, thousands of faded pictures and dozens of dogeared scrapbooks. Clothing is sealed behind glass wall cases the expensive dress worn by June Carter Cash on a visit to Jimmy Carter’s White House and a dress suit worn by her husband, Johnny, on the same night.
