Harry Caray (Carabina) hit town in 1944 as an announcer at the St. Louis Star radio station, KXOK. While his strength was in sports broadcasting, which he put to good use that year doing play-by-play for the Cardinals/Browns World Series, he was a jack-of-all-trades back at the station. Caray would write his own copy, conduct news interviews, and write and present editorials on the station, and he had a regular sports talk program as well. It was said he sought a job at KMOX in 1943 by sending a personal letter to the home of the station’s general manager, Merle Jones, who granted him an interview and then told him to get some experience and come back. He did his first game as a Cardinals’ announcer April 17, 1945. Years later, in 1955, Caray would be teamed in the Cardinals’ broadcast booth with Jack Buck and Joe Garagiola, and the three were heard throughout the Midwest over the vast Cardinals’ radio network. Harry Caray’s colorful announcing and antics endeared him to radio fans, whom Caray felt were the people to whom he was responsible. When players became perturbed at his description of their work, Caray swore he was telling it the way he saw it. After 25 years in the St. Louis broadcast booth, Harry Caray was given his walking papers by his employer, Anheuser-Busch.

Harry Caray Harry Caray Born, Harold Carabina March 1, 1920 in St. Louis, MO. Cary began his broadcasting career at the age of 19, working at radio stations in Joliet, Illinois and Kalamazoo, Michigan. He later returned to St. Louis to begin his major league broadcasting career with the St. Louis Cardinals. It was in St. Louis where Caray first gained national recognition with his ability to capture the heart of baseball – and his inability to sing. Caray’s unique rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” has become a favorite with baseball fans across the nation.
He has broadcast over 6,000 games including boxing, football, basketball and hockey and was named “Broadcaster of the Year” six times by The Sporting News.
Caray spent the 1970 season broadcasting Oakland Athletic games on both radio and television. In 1971, he moved to Chicago where he became the radio television voice of the Chicago White Sox. Eleven years later, in 1982, the Chicago Cubs welcomed him to Wrigley Field to broadcast Cubs games on WGN-TV and WGN Radio. Harry died on February 18, 1998.
Harry was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989 receiving the Ford C. Frick Award.

from the Harry Carey Appreciation Society .c The Associated Press, By KEN PETERS RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (AP) - Harry Caray, who took millions of fans out to the ball game on radio and television, died Wednesday four days after collapsing at a Valentine's Day dinner. He was believed to be 77. In a career spanning almost 60 years, the often offbeat Hall of Fame broadcaster covered baseball's greats from Musial to Mays to Maddux. Holy Cow! as he would say. ``We're going to miss old Harry,'' Hall of Famer Stan Musial said. ``He was always the life of the party, the life of baseball.'' Caray had a heart attack Saturday at a nightclub-restaurant while with his wife, Dutchie. He died of brain damage caused by the attack, said Harlan Corenman, Eisenhower Medical Center spokesman. A broadcaster since 1941, Caray became a household name through his Chicago Cubs' games for WGN-TV, carried nationally by many cable systems. He was immediately recognizable for his thick, oversized glasses and raspy, sing-along rendition of ``Take Me Out to the Ball Game'' over the public address system during the seventh-inning stretch. Caray was a broadcaster for the St. Louis Cardinals for 25 years and for the Chicago White Sox for 11 years before moving across town to Wrigley Field in 1982.

http://www.harrycarays.com/hharry.htm
Harry Caray and his "tell-it-like-it-is" style of broadcasting had become as synonymous with Chicago baseball fans as the ivy that lines the center field wall at Wrigley Field.
This veteran play-by-play announcer was perhaps best recognized for his tradition of singing "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" during the 7th inning stretch and for his famous exclamations: "It might be, it could be, it is! A home run!" and "Holy cow!"
Caray reached a major milestone on July 23, 1989, when he was honored as the winner of the Ford Frick Award at the annual induction ceremonies at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. During his five-minute acceptance speech, Caray said, "The more I think of all the history which surrounds me, the more inadequate I feel."
It was in St. Louis, covering the Cardinals from 1945 to 1969, where Caray gained national fame. He was named "Baseball Announcer of the Year" for seven years in a row by The Sporting News for his work with the Cardinals. In 1989, Caray was inducted into the American Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame located in New York.
Caray was born Harry Christopher Carabina of French-Rumanian and Italian parentage in one of the poorest sections of St. Louis. He was an infant when his father died; at ten, he was taken in by his aunt upon the death of his mother.
