THE ORIGIN AND DISTRIBUTION OF SIDERITE LAYERS WITHIN THE WANDOO FIELD, DAMPIER SUB-BASIN, AUSTRALIA.
Brown, Robert
Honours Degree, 1998
University of Adelaide
ABSTRACT
The Wandoo Oil Field is located on the eastern margin of the Dampier Sub-basin on the North West Shelf of Australia. The " M. australis Sandstone" is the reservoir for the Wandoo Oil Field. The aim of this project was to determine the origin, distribution and influence on reservoir performance of the siderite-cemented layers in the "Unit A" sands of the " M. australis Sandstone" using petrographic analysis, carbon and oxygen isotopic analysis, XRD analysis and cathodoluminescence.
The results of the study show that the siderite cement forms in restricted chemical conditions; a reducing environment with high levels of bicarbonate, high Fe /Ca ratio, low dissolved sulphides and relatively high pH. The siderite cement occurs early in the diagenetic history of the reservoir in a modified sulphate reduction zone where the rate of ferric iron reduction is greater than the rate of reduction of sulphate. The controlling factor for this reaction is how much oxidized glauconite is present as this is the source of the ferric iron.
The siderite-cemented layers at Wandoo are stratigraphically significant and are associated with both erosional surfaces and condensed sections. It is during these times that glauconite can be oxidized to goethite. Therefore sequence stratigraphy can be used as a tool in glauconite-rich sediments to predict where siderite-cemented layers will form.

Brown, Robert
Scottish botanist who in 1827 discovered Brownian motion. As a botanist, his more lasting work was in the field of plant morphology. He was the first to establish the real basis for the distinction between gymnosperms (pines) and angiosperms (flowering plants).
On an expedition to Australia 1801-05 Brown collected 4,000 plant species and later classified them using the 'natural' system of Bernard de Jussieu (1699-1777) rather than relying upon the system of Carolus Linnaeus
Brown was born in Montrose, Forfarshire (now Tayside). He studied medicine at Edinburgh. In the late 1790s he was introduced to English botanist Joseph Banks , and served as his librarian 1810-20, after the Australian voyage.
The concept of Brownian motion arose from his observation that very fine pollen grains suspended in water move about in a continuously agitated manner. He was able to establish that inorganic materials such as carbon and various metals are equally subject to it, but he could not find the cause of the movement (now explained by kinetic theory).
Brown also described the organs and mode of reproduction in orchids. In 1831, he discovered that a small body that is fundamental in the creation of plant tissues occurs regularly in plant cells - he called it a 'nucleus', a name that is still used.

http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/H/Hanbury-Brown/
Hanbury-Brown, Robert B ritish radio astronomer who participated in the early development of radio-astronomy techniques and later in designing a radio interferometer that permits considerably greater resolution in the results provided by radio telescopes.
Hanbury-Brown was born in Aruvankadu, India, and studied engineering at Brighton Polytechnic and the City and Guilds College before joining a radar-research team under the auspices of the Air Ministry in 1936. After World War II he joined the staff at the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire. In 1960 he was made professor at Victoria University, Manchester, moving in 1962 to the University of Sydney, Australia.
Hanbury-Brown became one of the first astronomers to construct a radio map of the sky. In 1949 he detected radio waves emanating from the Andromeda nebula at a distance of 2.2 million light years. To improve resolution, Hanbury-Brown and his colleagues devised the radio interferometer, and as a result Cygnus A became the first radio source traced to a definite optical identification, even though it had a magnitude (brightness) of only 17.9.
Hanbury-Brown developed the technique of intensity interferometry 1956, and has used the stellar interferometer at Narrabi Observatory in Australia to study the sizes of hotter stars.

words of Wendell Phillips, that he had “letters of marque from God”; that he had a divine commission to destroy slavery by violent means. He scouted the “milk and water principles” of the milder abolitionists, advocated vigorous resistance to the slave power, and expressed his ideas by actions rather than by words. It now seems that this policy aided very little in making Kansas a free state, and that the attack on Harper’s Ferry, while creating much feeling at the moment, had very little effect on the subsequent course of events. It is safe to assume that secession and civil war would have followed the election of Lincoln if there had been no such raid into Virginia. Brown was twice married and was the father of twenty children, eight of whom died in early childhood. His sons aided him in all his undertakings, two of them being kified at Harper’s Ferry; and Owen Brown, who died in 1889, was long the only survivor of the attack. See the life (1910) by 0. G. Brown, Robert Brown, Robert, , Scottish botanist and botanical explorer. In 1801 he went as a naturalist on one of Matthew Flinders's expeditions to Australia, returning (1805) to England with valuable collections. In his Prodromus florae Novae Hollandiae et Insulae Van Diemen (1810) he described Australian flora. A leading botanist of his day, he served as librarian to the Linnaean Society and to Sir Joseph Banks and later as curator at the British Museum. He observed Brownian movement in 1827, discovered the cell nucleus in 1831, and was the first to recognize gymnosperm as a distinct angiosperm. His studies of several plant families and of pollen were also notable.
