Robert Burns
A good test of society is the tolerance which it shows towards its critics. By this test 18th century Scotland ranks high in its treatment of Burns who was against Church and State and yet continued to remain a Government employee despite a war fever which sent Muir to Botany Bay. It is true that Burns in a fever of anxiety wrote pseudo-patriotic verses which no-one sings and only Willie Ross quotes - no doubt in similar anxiety about a government job. It is strange to think that, but for the success of his first book of poems, Robert Burns would have gone to Jamaica as a slave driver - he, the Poet of Freedom! For this is what the British Empire offered him. Degenerate Scots (that is, patriotic North Britons) claim Burns as one of them, because of his "poems" such as "Does Haughty Gaul Invasion Threat?" which are quoted as evidence that he was one of their kind. They were merely a part of a feverish, anguished attempt to prevent his dismissal from the Civil Service because of his Jacobin sympathies, which were almost as dangerous in his time as Communist associations are today. No one ever sings them now because unlike his other poems, they bear the impress of insincerity. The real tragedy of Burns’ life is the Burns orator. His real attitude was expressed without ambiguity in his letter to Mrs Dunlop (10/471790):

Reprinted from: The Microscope, BROWNIAN MOVEMENT IN CLARKIA POLLEN: A REPRISE OF THE FIRST OBSERVATIONS Brian J Ford INTRODUCTION Much interest has focussed on Brown's first observations of Brownian Movement* in 1827. His discovery of the phenomenon has been widely misunderstood. It has been believed that Brown's attention was directed to movement of pollen grains themselves ( , and there have been claims ( that his microscope was not sufficiently developed for the observation of so diminutive a phenomenon. It has become plain that many workers have discussed the problem without consulting Brown's original words on the subject, and it is abundantly clear that the optical propensities of the original microscope(s) owned by Brown have been widely ignored. A recreation of Brown's pioneering demonstration is presented in correlation with the privately printed account Brown himself prepared in 1827. ROBERT BROWN, BOTANIST In October 1798, the young officer was in London to recruit for the regiment. He was introduced to the eminent botanist Sir Joseph Banks as "a Scotchman, fit to pursue an object with constance and [a] cold mind." Within two years, Banks was planning an epic voyage of discovery to the new territories that we now know as Australia. His natural choice for botanist on board was the young Brown. He sailed under Captain Matthew Flinders at a salary of £420, at the time a generous sum. When they sailed on board the

Hi! My name is Robert Brown and I've been a photographer for over twenty years. I specialize mainly in landscape and scenic photography. Many of my current images are from California, but after much delay I've finally updated this site with pictures I took during an extensive trip to Central Europe over the summer. I stayed the longest in Prague but I also went to Vienna, Berlin, Budapest, and Krakow. I'm interested to know what you think of my pictures so E-Mail me if you have any comments!

Robert Brown (1773-1858) A Scotsman who discovered the brownian movement of minute particles (1828), a phenomenon that provides a basis for demonstrating molecular motion. He later discovered the general occurrence of the nucleus in plant cells (1831). He first observed (1827) that pine trees and their kin have ovules (undeveloped seeds) and mature seeds that are naked (not protected by an ovary). He classified gymnosperms and separated them from true, flower-bearing angiosperms (1825). He discovered the minute areola (spaces) in pollen grains, which he regarded as points for the production of pollen tubes.

Acknowledged as the leading British botanist to collect in Australia during the first half of the 19th century. Studied medicine and joined the army as a sugeon in 1795. One of the scientists who accompanied Flinders on his historic voyage to chart the coast of Australia, leaving Britain in December 1801 and ending in Sydney in June 1803. Brown stayed in Australia until May 1805. He published the results of his collecting in his famous " Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae " in 1810. He succeeded Dryander as Banks ' librarian, and on Banks' death in 1820 inherited his library and herbarium. This was transferred to the British Museum where Brown became the first Keeper of the Botanical Department.
