Job Description:
Voice actor
Worked in: Animated cartoons and radio
Noted for: Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Woody Woodpecker, Barney Rubble, etc. etc. Woody Woodpecker. The amazingly versatile voice actor was responsible for a lot more characters than just Woody. Others of that approximate vintage include Daffy Duck, Foghorn Leghorn, Sylvester Pussycat and of course, Bugs Bunny. On radio, Blanc's roles included Pancho (The Cisco Kid's sidekick), Sad Sack, and Jack Benny's ancient automobile. It would not be much of an exaggeration to state that Mel Blanc invented the profession of cartoon voice acting. Before 1936, when he joined Warner Bros., voices tended to be done by whoever happened to be handy. Popeye, for example, was voiced by animator Jack Mercer, and Mickey Mouse, at first, by Walt Disney Tweety Bird, and others, credited Blanc with having raised the standards of animation art, by showing them all what the form was capable of. Melvin Jerome Blank was born May 30, 1908, in San Francisco, and grew up in Portland, OR. (He changed the spelling of his last name at age 16.) He showed an early interest in the sounds of people's voices, studying and practicing the various accents of his ethnic neighbors and playing them back to his teachers and classmates in the form of jokes. This gave him a taste for applause, and set him on the road to fame. Immediately upon graduating high school, he got a steady gig on a local radio show, "The Hoot Owls". It was the first of several jobs in radio and vaudeville. Right about when the movies were starting to talk, he lit out for Hollywood.

Mel Blanc
Born in San Fransisco,California, on May 30, 1908,and died on July 10, 1989,in L.A.California,Mel Blanc set standards at Warner Bros. and later at Hanna-Barbera,repesctively with almost the whole Looney Tunes gang (except Sniffles,The Three Bears,Elmer Fudd,Michigan J.Frog,Granny,Witch Hazel,Miss Prissy,Petunia Pig,Cool Cat,and Merlin the Magic Mouse and supporting cast and even early versions of Porky and most of Roadrunner).
As we have seen others did voices, too, but Mel did most of them.He also did Woody for Walter Lantz before WB signed him up,in fact Mel created that laugh of Wood's originally for Daffy and Bugs. Daffy was based on Leon Schlesinger, the Warners cartoon boss, who talked with a listhp.(like me).Porky was a refurb of actor Joe DOugherty who really stuttered, Bugs was a funny tough cracking Bronx Brooklyn kid,Foghorn Leghorn and Yosemite Sam southern blowhards with Sam being from TExas,Speedy being..we.ll.a little Mexiacan cholo stereoptype, andSylvester being like Daffy only Daffy was always sped up-Syl;vester is close to Mel's voice.(I know.I've heards it.
At HB as Barney Rubble,he only went half way as Art Carney (per Joe Barbera's original request) on THE HONEYMOONERS,for THE FLINSTONES

He soon became noted for voicing a wide variety of cartoon characters, including Bugs Bunny Tweety Bird Porky Pig Barney Rubble , and many others. In a Hollywood cemetery stands a gravestone with an epitaph which reads "That's All Folks". It is the final resting place of Mel Blanc, Master of voices, dialects, and characters. The inscription is fitting, yet inaccurate. Although Blanc passed away nine years ago at age 81, his voices live on forever through outrageous Looney Tunes cartoon characters such as Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck and hundreds of animated pranksters. That's Not All, Folks The Exceptional Characters of Mel Blanc
But that's still not all. Blanc's son Noel is preserving his father's voice for eternity. His company Warner-Blanc, a joint venture with Warner Bros., is computerizing Blanc's character voices both to archive these animated treasures and to apply them to future consumer products that use voice technology. The Mel Blanc Voice Watch Collection by Armitron, produced to celebrate the 90th anniversary of his birthday, is just such a product. The talking watches reproduce Mel Blanc's Looney Tunes voice characterizations with cutting-edge technology. Dubbed "the man of a thousand voices," Blanc's animated antics are classics, even if some fans may not know the name behind the voice. From cartoons to film to commercials to radio, more than 250 million people worldwide still hear his voice each day, and the new watches only add to this staggering total. His repertoire is long and legendary-1,500 voices mastered in his 53-year career. He has performed hundreds of familiar voices for Warner Bros. and Hanna-Barbera, including Elmer Fudd, Tweety Pie, Sylvester, Barney Rubble, Road Runner, the Tasmanian devil, Wile E. Coyote, Woody Woodpecker, Foghorn Leghorn, Heathcliffe, Pepe Le Pew, Speedy Gonzales, Captain Caveman and more. His favorites, Noel says, were Bugs, Tweety and "Taz," which were also among his most outrageous.

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED 4/25/97 When Mel Blanc passed away, the folks at Warner Brothers ran a touching double-truck color ad showing Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Foghorn Leghorn, Tweety, Sylvester, Yosemite Sam and a few others, all with heads bowed and voices stilled. They, along with the Flintstones' Barney Rubble, were the most famous of his much publicized "thousand voices." In truth, Mel probably didn't have a thousand voices or even a hundred. But he had plenty and an amazing percentage of them gave breath to classic cartoon characters in very funny films. The great skill of Mel Blanc was as an actor: It is one thing to affect a funny voice quite another to mold a coherent, believable characterization with it and to wring every drop of humor out of every line. He had to be good. When he wasn't doing cartoons, he was dashing from mike to mike in the studios that broadcast the top network comedy radio programs. Appearing on The Jack Benny Program, as Mel did for a couple of decades, was like playing second for the Yankees at their prime. Mel was the first great cartoon voice actor and, in many ways, the best. Daws Butler perhaps had superior technique, and Paul Frees may have been more versatile but Mel was the guy who made it an art. He showed everyone how it should be done, back when nobody knew how it should be done. There are around fifty good reasons why those classic WB cartoons will live forever, and Mel Blanc is at least a dozen of those reasons.
