Back to Home Page or Contents Page or People or Index Blake, William (1757-1827) A s one of the most curious and significant figures in the history od English literature, Blake is renown as a poet, mystic , painter and engraver. With these talents he influenced both literature and graphic arts. His mystical abilities appeared in childhood when he began experiencing visions of angels and spiritual monks, later on these visions included the Angel Gabriel, the Virgin Mary, and other historical figures. It might be thought, as so often happens, that his parents would have discouraged him from these thoughts, but they did not. His parents and relatives were of humble people. Although Blake is a common Irish name, the family's ancestry is dubious. Later the poet W. B. Yeats , an ardent devotee of Blake and editor of his literary works, would have it believed that Blake came directly from Irish ancestry, but this is contradicted by Martin J. Blake in his genealogical work, Blake Family Records Blake, born in London, spent most of his life there. Since his parents knew of his early visions they offered to help him to become a painter. Blake was attracted to the position but generously pointer out that such an apprenticeship would be costly, and such an expense would not be fair to his other brothers and sisters, since his father's income as a hosier was not a large one. He entered the apprenticeship as an engraver, not just that the training was less expensive, but also because the profession was likely to yield a faster return.

In the same year he married a poor illiterate girl named Catherine Boucher, who was five years his junior. Coincidentally Catherine was also his mother's name. Catherine could neither read nor write and even signed her wedding contract with an X. Blake taught her reading and writing and even trained her as an engraver. At that time, George Cumberland, one of the founders of the National Gallery, became an admirer of Blake's work. Blake's first collection of poems, Poetical Sketches , was published circa 1783. His first foray into illuminated printing, a technique that became his hallmark, was made in 1788 with the book There is no Natural Religion . This was made by a colour printing process developed by Blake himself. His famous works Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience followed soon after. He became a friend of the painter Henry Fuseli Blake had an idiosyncratic view of his Christian religion. In 1789 William and Catherine joined the Swedenborgian New Church. He believed that the truth was learned by personal revelation, not by teaching. What he called his 'visions' were perhaps hallucinations, experiences that he allowed to guide his life. It was these that gave him such a strong and uncompromising belief in his own artistic direction, but also led others to call him eccentric or even mad. In

Glossary entry for Blake, William The following extract is taken from the William Blake home page William Blake (b. Nov. 28, 1757, London d. Aug. 12, 1827, London) was the first of the great English Romantic poets, as well as a painter, engraver and printer. Blake is frequently referred to as a mystic, but this is not really acurate. He deliberately wrote in the style of the Hebrew prophets and envisioned his works as expressions of prophecy, following in the footsteps (or, more precisely strapping on the sandles) of Elijah and Milton. The image shown here is one of Blake's most famous, titled "The Ancient of Days", which also happens to be the title of a Van Morrison song. The relief etching with watercolour appeared as the frontispiece to Blake's Europe: A Prophecy of 1794. Blake did not give the image a title; as Martin Butler ( The Paintings and Drawings of William Blake , 1981) writes It was J.T. Snow [ Nollekens and his Times , 1828] who first called this design "The Ancient of Days", relating it to Proverbs, viii, 27, but Blake's meaning is closer to that of this own Urizen , 1794, where, on plate 20, Urizen 'formed golden compasses And began to explore the Abyss'. William Blake: Songs of Innocence and Experience When I began to study poetry fifty years ago a group of Americans called the New Critics were in the ascendant. A popular book representing their method at its best was The Well-Wrought Urn: Studies in the Structure of Poetry , by Cleanth Brooks, published in 1947. These critics developed a type of formal analysis which they tried to pass off as an objective academic discipline, though behind it lay a quasi-religious shared assumption about the relationship of art to life. They believed that art stood in opposition to life, or offered an alternative to life, providing the form and meaning which chaotic life lacked. In art man was in control and could aspire to a degree of perfection impossible in life, could create forms, for example, which would not be subject to time, decay and death. Each poem should aspire to such self-contained perfection, separate from and owing as little as possible to the world outside itself, like a well-wrought urn. Some poems responded well to this treatment, including poems by such then fashionable poets as Auden, Stevens and Empson. But the works of greater poets such as Donne, Keats, Hopkins or Yeats seemed to me to be reduced by it. It could not handle less formal verse such as Whitman's and Lawrence's. Confronted by simplicity it was dumbstruck. Their concept of a good poem was not mine. As Lawrence said, nature abhors the billiard ball, the perfect-unto-itself sealed monad, the closed system. I did not want poems to be self-contained and self-referential. On the contrary, I wanted them to release their energies into the mind and feelings of the reader, and to relate to as much of the world outside themselves as possible.

Having attended Henry Parr's drawing school in the Strand, he was in 1772 apprenticed to Henry Basire, engraver to the Society of Antiquaries, and later was admitted as a student to the Royal Academy, where he exhibited in 1780. He married Catherine Boucher in 1782 and in 1783 published 'Poetical Sketches'. The first of his 'illuminated books' was 'Songs of Innocence' (1789), which, like 'The Book of Thel' (published in the same year), has as its main themes the celebration of innocence and its inviolability. Blake sets out his ideas more fully in his chief prose work 'The Marriage of Heaven and Hell' (1791) which proclaims his lifelong belief in the moral primacy of the imagination. But in 'Songs of Experience' (1794) he recognises the power of repression, and in a series of short narrative poems he looks for mankind's redemption from oppression through a resurgence of imaginative life. By 1797 he was ready for epic; 'Vala' was never finished, but in 'Milton and Jerusalem' he presents his renewed vision of reconciliation among the warring fragments of humanity. Other striking poems of his middle years are the lyrics of the 'Pickering Manuscript', and 'The Everlasting Gospel', but in the last years of his life he expressed himself in drawing rather than poetry.

Blake draws on a highly powerful, but essentially personal, mythological system of his own devising, but one that also draws on a variety of mythological, poetic and philosophical sources. On this, Blake himself remarked that he had to "create a System, or be enslav'd by another Man's." In part also, what Blake seeks to express can only be presented in terms of vague abstractions and allusions, with a cosmic perspective on issues of faith, religion, philosophy and belief, and this must also mean that the reader has to work hard. Yet the effort is worth it. Blake is a revolutionary and visionary artist and poet, and his work represented a decisively new direction in the course of English Poetry and the Visual Arts. Blake's works range from the deceptively simple and lyrical style of the Songs of Innocence and Experience , through speculative works such as The Marriage of Heaven and Hell , to the highly elaborate visionary and apocalyptic style of America The Four Zoas Milton and The Book of Urizen .
