Palm Sunday - 24 March 2002 Bishop Michael Henley - Bishop of St Andrews, Dunblane and Dunkeld visited St John's on Palm Sunday together with his wife Rachel. Whilst here he Confirmed two of our young members of the congregation - Meredith Marsden and Jennifer Rogers. Before the Confirmation he watched the play that had been written by Jennifer and Meredith and which was performed (to great applause) by our younger members of the church. After the Confirmation Bishop Michael Commissioned two additional Minister of Communion - Alex Howie and Professor Paul Wilkinson (in absentia). After the service the Bishop and his wife got a chance to chat to members of the congregation over a glass of sherry. News Bishop May Revisit Dismissed Complaint Against Active Lesbian Pastor With Same-sex Lover, and Illegitimate Son Re-appointed To UM Church Bishop announces unusual review of decision (Seattle Gay News) After a church investigative committee dealt another setback for opponents of Gay and Lesbian clergy last week, the head of the Pacific Northwest Conference of the United Methodist Church has intervened to "review" the decision not to prosecute Rev. Karen Dammann, a former Seattle minister who came out as a Lesbian on Valentine’s Day, 2001. Following instruction from the church’s high court, Bishop Elias Galvan filed the complaint against Dammann last November. The complaint was for "practices declared by the United Methodist Church to be incompatible with Christian teachings," referring to a prohibition that states, "since the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching, self-avowed practicing homosexuals are not to be accepted as candidates, ordained as ministers, or appointed to serve in the United Methodist Church." The committee on investigation of the Pacific Northwest Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church failed to take action forwarding the complaint after a closed hearing on July 24 in Tacoma. Charged with determining whether or not reasonable grounds existed to put Dammann on trial, the committee split, three in favor, three against and one member abstaining. Five votes were needed to refer the charges to trial. Seven ordained ministers, two non-voting lay members of the church, and six alternates, elected to a four-year term, comprise the committee.

The site of the new parish was part of the original 370 acre Meredith property, which had been both a dairy and beef cattle farm. In 1963, the Diocese of Des Moines purchased 11 acres as part of the sale of the ET Meredith estate. Mr. Meredith had been Secretary of Agriculture in President Woodrow Wilson's cabinet and an early leader in the 4-H Club organization. He became renowned as the creator and publisher of "Successful Farming", "Dairy Farmer", and "Better Homes and Gardens" magazines. He had far-reaching influence in the fields of publishing and agriculture. By the time of his death on June 17, 1928, at the age of 51, he was highly recognized in business, political, and social worlds. In 1936, Mrs. Meredith had a cottage built on the grounds consisting of a bedroom, bath and what is now known as the fireplace room. The big house was added on in 1939-40, growing to 21 rooms. The mansion was built as a place to entertain service men and women from Camp Dodge and Veterans Hospital during World War II. Mrs. Woodrow Wilson was a guest in the Meredith Home on several occasions.

Many aspects of these processes have been, and are currently being, studied mechanistically at the laboratory scale. In order to describe the interrelationships between these different processes under more realistic field scale heterogeneities, field scale tests are required. I was part of a multi-disciplinary team of scientists who designed and implemented integrated laboratory and field scale adsorption, aquifer pumping, and infiltration tests. These tests helped quantitate the significance of preferential flow under both saturated and unsaturated conditions, quantitate the extent of adsorption equilibrium under field conditions, and evaluate the applicability of laboratory measured parameter values in describing contaminant transport in the field.
