Lewis The Library of Congress plans to announce next month an ambitious effort to convert into digital form the most important materials in its collection and in the collections of all public and research libraries in the country. The project would create a vast "virtual library" of digitized images of books, drawings, manuscripts and photographs that would look just like the originals and could be sent over computer networks to computer screens and high-definition television sets, accessible to millions of students and researchers. The goal is eventually to offer movies and music as well. "Our goal is to bring these resources out to people across the country and not just to the people who can come to use the library in Washington," said Suzanne Thorin, chief of staff of the Library of Congress. The project has benefits for the library as well.

Verifying a Mayflower line So there is a family rumor you're a Mayflower descendant? It is certainly possible, millions of people have Mayflower ancestors. But don't get your hopes up eitherin all my experience I would estimate about 80-90% of family rumors about Mayflower passengers turn out to be wrong. Before I give you information on how to verify your line, let me give you a little personal anecdote to put things into perspective. I am a descendant of a pre-1630 immigrant named Henry Alden of Needham. He has no relation to John Alden who came on the Mayflower . I am a descendant of a pre-1630 immigrant named John Rogers of Marshfield; he has no relation to Thomas Rogers of the Mayflower . I am descended from John Eaton of Dedham, another pre-1630 immigrant. He has no relation to Francis Eaton of the Mayflower . I am a descendant of pre-1630 immigrant Henry Cooke of Salem. He has no relation to Mayflower passenger Francis Cooke. I am descended from Kenelm Winslow, an early immigrant. He did not come on the Mayflower , though he had a brother Edward who did.

The book is derived from transcripts of interviews that were conducted by author Mark Eden Horowitz over a three-day period in 1997 at Sondheim's New York home. Using Sondheim's manuscripts as a reference, Horowitz focused the discussion on the composer's creative processes. "We are grateful that Stephen Sondheim not only generously agreed to bequeath his manuscripts to the Library of Congress, but consented to a series of videotaped interviews about his methodology," said Librarian of Congress James H. Billington. The Library is pleased to support the publication of these interviews, which anticipate the questions of future scholars." Beginning with a discussion of his latest work at the time, "Passion," and working back to "Pacific Overtures," this collection of interview transcripts details Sondheim's body of musical compositions.
