Hark, I hear the bells of Westgate,
I will tell you what they sigh,
Where those minarets and steeples
Prick the open Thanet sky. Happy bells of eighteen-ninety,
Bursting from your freestone tower!,
Recalling laurel, shrubs and privet,
Red geraniums in flower. Feet that scamper on the asphalt
Through the Borough Council grass,
Till they hide inside the shelter
Bright with ironwork and glass. Striving chains of ordered children
Purple by the sea-breeze made, Striving on to prunes and suet Past the shops on the Parade. Some with wire around their glasses Some with wire around their teeth, Writhing frames for running noses And the drooping lip beneath. Church of England bells of Westgate! On this balcony I stand

John Betjeman
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Sir John Betjeman (1906-1984) was an English poet and writer on architecture . He was born in Highgate London , his surname indicating his Dutch ancestry. He left Magdalen College, Oxford without a degree due to lack of work which resulted in his failing his divinity exams. In his verse autobiography Summoned by Bells (1960), Betjeman tells the story of his early life, up to his employment as a teacher at a preparatory school Later, Betjeman obtained employment as a journalist, before joining the civil service. It has recently been revealed that his wartime duties entailed providing secret intelligence reports. Betjeman never took himself too seriously. His poems are often humorous, and in later life he enjoyed a career as a broadcaster, his popularity being in no small measure due to his bumbling image. He became Poet Laureate in 1972, succeeding

Sir John Betjeman
Sir John Betjeman, who became Poet Laureate in 1972, was well known through his appearances on television, and his love of traditional architecture and churches. He was born in London in 1906. From early childhood, he spent holidays at Trebetherick in Cornwall and there made friends with the Headmaster of Dragon School, Oxford. As a consequence of this friendship, he went to board at The Dragon School from 1917 to 1920. Following this, he went to Marlborough College and in 1925 he became a student at Magdalen College, Oxford. Betjeman's interest in churches and architecture was kindled at the Dragon School, but he had been interested in poetry from an early age. At Magdalen, he was part of the 'literary set' and after Oxford he was determined not to join his father's business in 'trade' but to carve out a literary career instead. In October 1930, he started working for the Architectural Review and in 1933 also, briefly, became a film critic on the Evening Standard. Betjeman married Penelope Chetwode and subsequently rented Garrards Farm in Uffington where they moved in February, 1934. The Betjemans soon became immersed in village life. John become People's Warden at The Church and Penelope directed plays and become involved in the Women's Institute. They entertained many famous friends at Uffington. Their son, Paul, was born in Uffington in 1937. Garrards Farm, Uffington, the chalk-built cottage where the Betjemans lived during the 1930s.

Sir John Betjeman, OBE, Poet Laureate, lies buried in the small graveyard of one of the smallest and remotest churches in the country; the church of St. Enodoc, in the parish of St. Minver, in North Cornwall. A simple headstone made from the local Delabole slate, is enscribed in the fanciful style of decoration that he favoured in Mount Zion and other early books. The grave has an untended look and the surrounding grass finds it hard to compete against the footwear of the devoted who come to gaze on his resting place.
Born at the foot of Highgate Hill at 52 Parliament Hill Mansions, the family soon moved up the social strata and West Hill to a point two-thirds of the way up, at No. 31. The British appear to find it socially desirable to live on a hill - Highgate Hill, Primrose Hill, Harrow-on-the-Hill, even Denmark Hill considers itself superior.
Later he found a fashionable niche in Cloth Fair, within the City of London, and latterly a secure place in the smart-aleckness of Chelsea where the inhabitants´ only big worry is to find a place to put their car when they return after going out and vacating its warm spot.

Slough
by John Betjeman (1906 - 1984)
John Betjeman published his poem about Slough in 1937 in the collected works Continual Dew. Slough was becoming increasingly industrial and some housing conditions were very cramped. In willing the destruction of Slough, Betjeman urges the bombs to pick out the vulgar profiteers but to spare the bald young clerks. He really was very fond of his fellow human beings. Slough is much improved nowadays and he might be pleasantly surprised by a stroll there.
Slough
Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough!
It isn't fit for humans now,
There isn't grass to graze a cow.
Swarm over, Death!
Come, bombs and blow to smithereens
Those air -conditioned, bright canteens,
Tinned fruit, tinned meat, tinned milk, tinned beans,
Tinned minds, tinned breath. Mess up the mess they call a town-
A house for ninety-seven down
And once a week a half a crown
For twenty years. And get that man with double chin Who'll always cheat and always win, Who washes his repulsive skin In women's tears: And smash his desk of polished oak And smash his hands so used to stroke And stop his boring dirty joke And make him yell.

John Betjeman
Poet England Born 28 Aug 1906
Died 19 May 1984
John Betjeman was born in 1906 and educated at Marlborough and Oxford. His wife, a daughter of Field-Marshal Lord Chetwode, was herself a writer of distinction. His long autobiographical poem, 'Summoned by Bells', gives the background to his childhood in Highgate, North London. It was the subject of a highly successful BBC television film, one of several for which Sir John wrote the scripts and in which he appeared as narrator. A founder of the British Victorian Society, he was a well-known broadcaster and leading authority on architecture, particularly Victorian church architecture, and topographical subjects. However, it was as a poet that he was best known and loved. He received many of the major British literary prizes: the Royal Society of Literature Award under the Heinemann Bequest; the annual Foyle Poetry Prize (twice); and the Duff Cooper Memorial Prize. In 1960 he was given the CBE; in 1969 he was knighted; and in 1972 he was appointed Poet Laureate. He died in 1984.
