Zola, Emile 1840-1902, French novelist. He was a professional writer and earned his living through journalism and his novels. About 1870 he became the apologist and most typical exponent of French naturalism. This literary school held that the novel should be scientific in a strict sense. Inspired by his readings in social history and medicine, Zola decided to apply scientific techniques and observations to the depiction of French society under the Second Empire. He composed a vast series of novels in which the characters and their social milieus are presented in minute and often sordid detail. Of his many novels, those considered most important are among the 20 that constitute the series Les Rougon-Macquart (1871-93), an account of the decay of a family as the result of heredity and environment, with special emphasis on alcoholism, disease, and degeneracy. Perhaps the best-known of these are L'Assommoir (1877, tr.

French novelist and critic, the founder of naturalist movement in literature. Zola redefined Naturalism as "Nature seen through a temperament." Among Zola's most important works is his famous Rougon-Macquart cycle (1871-1893), which included such novels as L'ASSOMMOIR (1877), about the suffering of the Parisian working-class, NANA (1880), dealing with prostitution, and GERMINAL (1885), depicting mining industry. Zola's open letter J'ACCUSE on January 13, 1898, reopened the case, where the Jewish Captain Alfred Dreyfus was sentenced to Devil's Island. "I am little concerned with beauty or perfection. I don't care for the great centuries. All I care about is life, struggle, intensity. I am at ease in my generation." (from My Hates, 1866)
Before his breakthrough as a writer, Zola worked as a clerk in a shipping firm and then in sales department of the publishing house of Louis-Christophe-Francois-Hachette. He also wrote literary columns and art critics for the Cartier de Villemessant's newspapers. As a political journalist Zola did not hide his antipathy toward the French Emperor Napoleon II and his Second Empire.

Figure 1.This is one of the few photographs I know of with Jacques wearing a dress. He seems to have worn dresses until he was about 4 years old, after whuch he mostly wore sailor suits and gingham smocks. Emile Zola is one of the most aclaimed writers in French loterature. He was the leading French author in the late 19th century. He was the leading light of French naturalism and a cutting novelist and polemical writer. Had he died in 1895 he would today be remembered as an important French author. Today he is primarily remembered as a leading advocate of human rights for a letter written at considerable personal risk and published in 1898 accusing the French military of unjustly convicting a them obscure French army officer of treason. Zola had two children. The girl, Dennis, was born in 1889 and her younger brother, Jacques, was born 2 years later in 1891. Zola was an avid amateur photographer and there are many wonderful photographs of the children. These are very valuable because many were taken in the 1890s before amateur photography and family snapshots were common.
    Family
Emile's father was an Italian engineer, who gained French citizenship in 1862.

    ZOLA, Emile
Friendship with Cezanne and a literary career in Paris in the 1860's led to Zola's interest in the new realist school in art. In 1864 he met Gabrielle Alexandrine Meley who posed for Monet and Cezanne and became his companion and, in 187o, his wife. A series of articles on the Salon of 1866 for L'Evenement marked the start of Zola's courageous defense of Manet in the 1860's. A study in the Revue du XIXe siecle was reprinted for Manet's 1867 exhibition, and Zola protested against the censorship of his lithograph and painting of The execution of Maximilian in 1869. He wanted Manet to illustrate his Tales for Ninon and dedicated the novel Madeleine Ferat to him in 1868, the year in which Manet painted his portrait and possibly one of Gabrielle. Rejected as a volunteer in 1870, Zola took his wife and mother away from Paris during the war, reporting on the provisional Republican government in Bordeaux. In the 1870's he continued his art criticism, championing Manet as leader of the new realist and Impressionist school but with reservations (in 1879 through an article which had appeared in a Russian review, and in 1880 with his articles in Le Voltaire). Although Zola was ultimately unable to accept him as the hoped for 'man of genius', Manet remained grateful for his old friend's support and paid tribute to his integrity and courage in 1881.
