You have noticed that everything an Indian does is in a circle, and that is because the Power of the World always works in circles, and everything tries to be round. . . . The sky is round, and I have heard that the earth is round like a ball, and so are all the stars. the wind, in its greatest power, whirls. Birds make their nests in circles, for theirs is the same religion as ours. Even the seasons form a great circle in their changing, and always come back again to where they were. The life of a man is a circle from childhood to childhood, and so it is in everything where power moves.

Teachings of a Lakota Medicine Man

by Pete S., Sr. Catches The Warlike Seven
Once seven people went out to make war: the Ashes, the Fire, the Bladder, the Grasshopper, the Dragon Fly, the Fish, and the Turtle.
As they were talking excitedly, waving their fists in violent gestures, a wind came and blew the Ashes away.
"Ho!" cried the others, "he could not fight, this one!"
The six went on running to make war more quickly. They descended a deep valley, the Fire going foremost until they came to a river. The Fire said "Hsss-tchu!" and was gone.
"Ho!" hooted the others, "he could not fight, this one!" Therefore the five went on the more quickly to make war. They came to a great wood.

The Price of a Gift :

A Lakota Healer's Story

by Joseph Eagle Elk The Tree-bound
It was a clear summer day. The blue, blue sky dropped low over the edge of the green level land. A large yellow sun hung directly overhead. The singing of birds filled the summer space between earth and sky with sweet music.
Again and again sang a yellow-breasted birdie"Koda Ni Lakota!" He insisted upon it. "Koda Ni Lakota!" which was, "Friend, you're a Lakota! Friend, you're a Lakota!"
Perchance the birdie meant the avenger with the magic arrow, for there across the plain he strode. He was handsome in his paint and feathers, proud with his great buckskin quiver on his back and a long bow in his hand. Afar to an eastern camp of cone-shaped teepees he was going.
There over the Indian village hovered a large red eagle threatening the safety of the people. Every morning rose this terrible red bird out of a high chalk bluff and spreading out his gigantic wings soared slowly over the round camp ground.

Book Description
Taken from her family on the Yankton Sioux Reservation at the age of eight and sent to a school far from home, Gertrude is forced to become "civilized"to give up her moccasins, her long hair, and her language, and to renounce her Sioux heritage. As an adult, she renames herself Zitkala-Sa, which means "Red Bird," and devotes her life to fighting for justice for Native Americans. Her powerful and memorable story, told in her own words, will inspire anyone who has ever dreamed of making a difference.

Shamanism: Your First Journey
What is a Shaman?
The Shaman in tribal cultures is the person who sees into the sacred otherworld. The Shaman then brings these sacred visions of ancient spirits and power animals out of the "other world" and into the ritual. By this ritual process (much like prayer, imagery, and art), the Shaman heals themselves, other members of their tribe, and Mother Earth. By having visions of healing, and doing sacred ritual, the Shaman makes the visions come true (much like witches do in their own rituals and visualizations). The Shaman manifests reality in the outer world, from the visionary otherworld. What is a Vision Quest?
A vision quest is a quest for the visions in anyone’s life that will heal them and make them whole. In traditional first nations cultures, young people were sent into nature to listen to the voices of the living earth. The elders taught them to do this to find their path in life and to find their power animals, or Totems. The person on the vision quest spent days in caves, on mountain tops, on rivers and in the desert. Most of this time spent is waiting and inviting the voices to come to them. Often times they used herbal remedies to help them, as well as fasting rituals. When they heard the voices and saw their vision, they would return to the people of their tribe with the knowledge of who they were supposed to be.

Native American Wisdom
This Page is devoted to the great leaders of the native Americans that have passed on and have left us some great lessons to learn from and all of  the following are direct quotes from a book I read named "Native American Wisdom"
The native American is of the soil, whether it be the region of forests, plains, pueblos, or mesas.  He fits into the landscape, for the hand that fashioned the continent also fashioned the man for his surroundings.  He once grew as naturally as the sun flowers; he belongs just as the buffalo belonged...
Luther Standing Bear (1868?-1939)
                                                             Oglala Sioux Chief

You have noticed that everything a Native American does is in a circle, and that is because the power of the world always moves in a circle, and everything tries to be round...the sky is round, and I have heard that the Earth is round like a ball, and so are the stars.  The wind, in its greatest power, whirls in a circle.  Birds make their nests in a circle, for theirs is the same Religion as ours...Even the seasons form a great circle in their changing, and always come back again to where they were.  The life of a man is also a circle for childhood to childhood, and so it is in everything where power moves.
Black Elk (1863-1950)
                                                              Oglala Sioux Holy Man
We believe that the Great Spirit sees and hears everything, and never forgets that here after he will give every man a spirit home according to his desserts...This I believe, and all my beliefs the same.

Gertrude Simmons Bonnin [Zitkala-Sa] (1876-1938) Dakota Sioux An old legend honors the wolf as the protector of women:
It is told that a group of young girls had to be left behind in hiding as the tribe had to pack up and move quickly due to imminent danger. When the girls came out of hiding and went in search of the tribe, they came upon an injured wolf. After nursing the wolf back to health, they were adopted by the his pack, who saved them from danger many times as the girls continued their search for the rest of their tribe.
The warrior fathers, upon returning to find the girls, saw the wolves surrounding their daughters from a distance. Not understanding that the wolves were actually protecting their daughters, they slew them one and all.
After being told of their grave mistake, they vowed to honor the wolf as protector throughout time. This became tradition and continues today. 'THE PROTECTORS" by L. David Eveningthunder
