PG Wodehouse The Man Upstairs Introduction
"I turned to Aunt Agatha, whose demeanour was now rather like that of one who, picking daisies on the railway, has just caught the down express in the small of the back" ( The Inimitable Jeeves Pelham Grenville Wodehouse, always known as either P.G. Wodehouse or simply Plum (in his Punch writing and letters), was born on October 15th 1881 in Guildford, Surrey. He is best known for his Jeeves and Wooster stories, although he wrote novels and stories about a great many other hilarious characters. His father was a civil servant who left to become a judge in Hong Kong while Plum was still a boy. As such, the young Wodehouse spent much of his childhood in the care of aunts (see his constant preoccupation with relatives, especially aunts, in his fiction). He went to school at Dulwich college and seems to have enjoyed his time there. His famous Psmith character represents his boarding school years. Wodehouse's first career was as a banker for he Hong Kong and Shanghai bank but he turned his back on this swiftly and took up freelance writing just two years later. He began by writing for boys' magazines and moved on to the Strand Magazine - where a great many of his books were published serially first - and Punch . His first novel was published in 1902 and his output was extremely prolific, including the dialogue and stories to many successful musical comedies. He married in 1914 but, despite already having become one of the leading humorists of his age, he had not reached his peak. That came with the characters of Bertie Wooster and his manservant Jeeves in the volume

Sir P.G Wodehouse (1881-1975)
Biography
Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse was born in Guilford, Surrey on October 15th 1881 and died on Valentine's Day 1975 in Long Island, U.S.A. As a novelist he is best known for his creation of the young bachelor Bertie Wooster and his effortlessly superior manservant Jeeves. Two characters that were given new life and vigour by the television adaptation of his stories and their portrayal by Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie. Having been educated in Dulwich College, he worked for the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank for two years before becoming a freelance writer and marrying in 1914. A prolific writer, he produced in excess of 100 novels, as well as many short stories, sketches, librettos, and lyrics for the likes of Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, and George Gershwin. During the Second World War, he was captured and interned in Germany, and in 1941 made five radio broadcasts from there to America. These broadcasts evoked deep and lasting resentment in Britain and whilst their content was largely humorous, he was branded a traitor. Eventually, his name was cleared and he moved to America and became a US citizen in 1955. He was knighted in 1975, just weeks before his death at the age of 93.

Sir P(elham) G(renville) Wodehouse (1881-1975)
"I believe there are two ways of writing novels. One is mine, making a sort of musical comedy without music and ignoring real life altogether ; the other is going right deep down into life and not caring a damn" - Sir. P.G.Wodehouse English comic novelist, short story writer, lyricist and playwright, best known as the creator of Jeeves, the perfect 'gentleman's gentleman,' Bertie Wooster of the Drones Club, a young bachelor aristocrat, and the absentminded Lord Emsworth of the Blandings Castle. Most of Wodehouse's works gently parodied the British aristocracy of the 1920s and 1930s. After World War II Wodehouse lived in the United States. During the decades, Wodehouse's picture of England distanced from reality and finally become a place where time stood still. "You know, Jeeves, you're by way of being rather a topper."

    P G Wodehouse (1881-1975)
Dulwich College 1894-1900: "six years of unbroken bliss"
P G Wodehouse was, perhaps, the greatest comic writer of the twentieth century. At Dulwich he excelled in Classics, sang, acted and was editor of the school magazine, The Alleynian , from 1899 to 1900. He played for both the 1st XV and 1st XI; in his last term he had published an essay called 'Some Aspects of Game Captaincy" in the Public School Magazine , for which he received a fee of half a guinea. He became a reporter on The Globe newspaper in 1902 and began to contribute school stories to The Captain , a magazine for boys. Dulwich College figures, thinly disguised, in the school novels Mike The Gold Bat The White Feather , etc. Up until the Second World War Wodehouse attended cricket and rugby matches at the College and wrote accounts of many for The Alleynian . In his later years on Long Island he regularly followed newspaper reports of games at Dulwich from the airmail edition of The Times Wodehouse is most famous for his creation of the character 'Jeeves' in 1919, and he continued to write these stories for fifty-two years. However he also produced a great many other literary works and by the time of his death had written 10 books for boys, 43 novels, 300 short stories and was author or part-author of 16 plays and 23 musical comedies. In 1937 he was awarded the 14th annual gold medal of the International Mark Twain Society. In 1974 he was made KBE.

    Pelham Grenville Wodehouse
Wodehouse received his education at Dulwich College, where he was a member of the school cricket team, (he would not lose interest in the local cricket tournament until many years later!). Also he practised boxing there. In this period he met gentry-folk which would serve as the main characters of his many books later. At the age of 28, not a long time before First World War, (1909), he went to America, (that was his second visit; his first had been in 1904) where he continued to write short stories and also critical reports for papers as theatrical critic. He made a serial for the Saturday Evening Post, (and for the next twenty-five years almost all his books make its first appearance in this magazine). At that time Wodehouse met people close to musicals circles, and wrote lyrics and took part in the creation of musical shows. At the same time he did not abandon writing and wrote Psmith, Journalist (1912), Piccadilly Jim (1918). At the age of 33, (1914), he married. After the war Plum continued to write books and took part not only in creating lyrics for musical comedies but tried his hand as a producer, (with differing degrees of luck).

Fans devoted to the master of comic fiction P.G. Wodehouse are legion. He represents an antic high point in the world of farce and social satire. Best known for the creation of two fictional worlds based on Blandings Castle and the Wooster-Jeeves gentleman-valet duo, Wodehouse is appreciated the world over for his exceedingly clever send-ups of the idle rich in Edwardian England. The series begins with two Wooster-Jeeves novels and one Blandings Castle novel. In The Code of the Woosters , it takes all the ingenuity of Jeeves, the "gentleman's gentleman" extraordinaire, to rescue his hapless and hopelessly obtuse young employer, Bertie Wooster, from the pickle of a plot to steal a silver jug from the home of an irascible magistrate.
