Magazine editor, journalist, and talented essayist, Nathaniel Parker Willis brought a rare, modern sensibility to his reports on contemporary life. From 1829, when he founded the New York Mirror, until his death in 1867, Willis worked continually as an editor and journalist. Flamboyant, vain, and ambitious, he was a controversial figure in New York society, scorned by lawyer George Templeton Strong and hated by his own sister, Sarah Willis Parton, the best-selling author known as Fanny Fern. But Walt Whitman called Willis a "good natured bright fellow," while remembering his vanity, which made him "the horror of photographers." Willis wrote often about Brady's New York gallery for his Home Journal. He posed for this Imperial photograph in New York in the late 1850s.

History Highlights
By Laurel Guadazno Provincetown Banner Columnist It is always interesting to read what early visitors to Cape Cod have to say about Provincetown. Nathaniel Parker Willis, sometimes called "Namby Pamby Willis" by his enemies, wrote a series of sketches of Cape Cod in 1851 that were published in a book titled "Hurry-Graphs: sketches of scenery, celebrities and society, taken from life." Willis was an interesting character. Flamboyant, vain and ambitious, he was a controversial character in New York Society. People either loved him or hated him. Walt Whitman called him a "good natured bright fellow," but his own sister, a writer herself under the pen name Fanny Fern, hated him. He was born in Maine, educated at Yale and traveled throughout Europe as foreign correspondent for his newspaper. At the time he visited Cape Cod he was editor of the New York Mirror, a weekly newspaper devoted to art, literature and fiction. His dispatches were sent back to the owner of the paper, a Mr. Morris. The plank sidewalk along Commercial Street had been installed before Willis’s visit, and he writes, "To walk anywhere else is to wade." Indeed, he was told Cape people had a strange walk, "a peculiar step for the sand, however, laying down the flat of the whole foot and bending the knee, and not the ankle, to advance."
