EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. (AFPN) A successful flight test of the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile was conducted recently at White Sands Missile Range, N.M. The flawless unpowered test indica tes a problem with the missile's electrical system experienced during the missile's first flight test April 8 has been remedied. During the test, the missile was launched from an Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., F-16 flying at Mach .7 at 15,000 feet. The missile's wing and tail surfaces deployed, and it conducted several maneuvers as it glided 8 to 10 miles during the 90-second flight. JASSM is the next generation long-range cruise missile that uses advanced global positioning system/inertial navigation system guidance. The Air Force is committed to buy 2,400 JASSMs from prime contractor Lockheed Martin, Orlando, Fla., but intends to purchase up to 4,000 if funding can be obtained.

Huntsville AL [ 205-842-0558 - Ms Trousdale] The planned seventh flight test of the Theater High Altitude Area Defense [THAAD] high altitude intercept mission was delayed today due to high winds at White Sands Missile Range, NM. The wind velocities exceeded the safety constraints required to contain the intercept debris within the approved range boundries. While all elements of the THAAD system and White Sands Missile Range support were ready to conduct the mission, the new flight date will be set at a later date based on weather predictions. The program is managed by the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization and executed by the Army Program Executive Office Air and Missile Defense and the Army THAAD Project Manager in Huntsville Ala. Lockheed/Martin is the prime contractor. The THAAD radar is built by Raytheon. Coleman Research Corporation and Aerotherm Corporation are the HERA target contractors. The HERA target is managed by the Army Space and Strategic Defense Command in Huntsville.

PATRIOT MISSILE FIRING TO BE CONDUCTED AT EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE
EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, FL The U.S. Army Program Executive Officer for Air and Missile Defense and the Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Project Office, Huntsville, Ala., in conjunction with the 46th Operations Group Airborne Test Branch, Eglin Air Force Base plan to conduct two Patriot missile tests.
The first test is scheduled to be overland against and MQM-107 drone Wednesday at approximately 9 a.m. from the Eastern range, and the impact will occur on the eastern side of Eglin.
One of the primary reasons for the overland test is to obtain a woodlands/forest background for the missile. Eglin not only provides that needed setting, but is also located near the Huntsville, Ala., program office and saves taxpayers dollars by cutting down on transportations and logistics costs, said Eglin officials.
Eglin officials explained that no missile debris from the overland test will exceed a 1-mile buffer impact limit line set inside the Eglin Reservation boundaries. The distance to any residential area will depend upon how close the residential area is to the Eglin Reservation boundary, but officials said the minimum distance would be 1 mile.
The second test is set for May 20 at approximately 9 a.m. and involves two PATRIOT missiles live fires conducted over the Gulf of Mexico. The two missions will use one PATRIOT Guidance Enhanced Missile (GEM) against an MQM-107 drone and a PATRIOT Advanced Capabability-2 (PAC-2) missile against a PATRIOT Omnidirectional Target Aerial-TOW (POTA-TOW) Target.

The Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO) and the U.S. Army conducted a developmental test of Patriot PAC-3 missile system this morning at White Sands Missile Range, N.M. at 6:24 a.m. Mountain Standard Time. Preliminary data indicate that the PAC-3 and PAC-2 missiles intercepted their assigned tactical ballistic missile (TBM) targets and all other test objectives appear to have been met. The test involved a simultaneous engagement using two PAC-3 missiles against a Hera ballistic missile target and one PAC-2 missile against a Patriot missile configured as a target. Test objectives included demonstrating a PAC-3 tactical ripple engagement of a TBM target in a remote launch configuration; demonstrating system capability to simultaneously engage multiple TBMs with PAC-3 and PAC-2 missiles; and demonstrating PAC-3 hit-to-kill intercept of a helix-maneuvering full-body TBM target. Video of the test depicts the following:

PAC-3 INTERCEPT TEST
TO BE CONDUCTED AT WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE
The Ballistic Missile Defense Organization and the U.S. Army plan to conduct an intercept test flight of a Patriot Advanced Capability 3 (PAC-3) Missile at White Sands Missile Range, N.M., Saturday, July 22, at approximately 7:00 a.m. Mountain Daylight Time. This test had previously been scheduled for Wednesday, July 19, but was postponed because of a failure of the Simulated Launch Adapter (SLA), a non-tactical piece of test equipment used as a safety device in pre-flight readiness checks. The delay had no effect on missile or target readiness. This will be the sixth flight test of the PAC-3 system. The PAC-3 Missile is a high velocity, hit-to-kill missile and is the next generation Patriot missile being developed to provide increased capability against advanced tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and hostile aircraft. Test objectives include demonstrating system capability to engage and destroy a low altitude threat representative cruise missile target, represented by an MQM-107 "Streaker" drone.

Feb. 2, 2000 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PAC-3 INTERCEPT TEST
TO BE CONDUCTED AT WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE
The Ballistic Missile Defense Organization and the U.S. Army plan to conduct an intercept test flight of a Patriot Advanced Capability 3 (PAC-3) Missile at White Sands Missile Range, N.M., Thursday, Feb. 3, at approximately 7:00 a.m. Mountain Standard Time. The PAC-3 Missile is a high velocity, hit-to-kill missile and is the next generation Patriot missile being developed to provide increased capability against advanced tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and hostile aircraft. Test objectives include demonstrating system/missile capability to engage a full-body tactical ballistic missile using remote operations which include employing the launching station several kilometers from the radar and engagement control stations; and demonstrating intercept using the tactical software which allows the seeker to select the optimal aimpoint on the target. To date, the PAC-3 missile has successfully completed four missions. The first two missions were developmental tests that consisted of missiles with special instrumentation packages in place of the seeker. These two missions were structured to verify critical systems and missile performance prior to beginning target intercept flight tests. A seeker characterization flight (SCF) mission was flown March 15, 1999, to test a PAC-3 missile with a seeker. Although not a primary objective of the SCF, a successful intercept of the Hera target was achieved. A second successful intercept test against a Hera target was conducted September 16, 1999.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 17, 1997 NASA PLANS COMET HALE-BOPP OBSERVING CAMPAIGN, ACTIVITIES As the orbit of Comet Hale-Bopp (C/1995 O1) brings it closer to the Sun in late March, NASA and agency-supported scientists will study the large and bright comet using sounding rockets, spacecraft and ground-based observations. Using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, Hale-Bopp's nucleus was measured at roughly three to four times larger than that of comet Halley (six miles in diameter), making it one of the largest comets ever observed. Researchers are studying Hale-Bopp to better understand comets, primitive bodies of loosely-packed ice and dust that many scientists consider the best-preserved remnants of the early solar system. Other agency activities, including a media day for coverage of the sounding rocket launches, and special Internet home pages for posting images obtained by NASA missions as well as amateur astronomers, are outlined below with points of contact and other relevant information.
