B elow are links to photos of rockets and missiles tested here at White Sands at one time or another. Some, like Copperhead, are not rockets or missiles but are weapon systems tested here. We have tried to include a little info about each item as background. On the other hand, some systems such as the Nike Ajax are very important and have more details. Some files contain more than one photo and will take some time to download. The estimated file sizes are indicated in parentheses to give you an idea of download time.

Third Flight Could Follow On Same Day
"We’re very pleased with the performance of the DC-XA to date and look forward to gaining more knowledge about advanced propulsion technologies in its second flight," said Dan Dumbacher, DC-XA program manager at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. "If everything falls in place, we’ll fly twice in the same day, but we’re not going to take any unnecessary risks with the vehicle," said Dumbacher. Conducting the additional test would demonstrate the vehicle’s reusability, and also would reduce the overall cost of the test series by obtaining a second set of test objectives for a small incremental cost, he said. Bataan Memorial March set for April 16
WASHINGTON (Army News Service, Jan. 12, 2000) Registration/information brochures are available for the Bataan Memorial Death March to be conducted at White Sands Missile Range, N.M., April 16, 2000. This is the 12th year for the popular memorial march which recognizes the sacrifices made by thousands of U.S. and Filipino service members overwhelmed by the Japanese in the Philippine Islands during World War II. Since its inception, the memorial march has grown from about 100 participants to more than 2,400. At least 3,000 marchers are expected for the 2000 event. As a sports event, the march is "just about as challenging as they come, especially in today's realm of extreme sports," says Capt. Paul Zeps, a member of the Bataan Memorial Death March Project Office. He stresses that advanced preparation is a must. "You've got to be in shape and train before attempting this march. It's particularly important if you're not acclimated to New Mexico's high desert environment." The march starts on the missile range main post, crosses hilly terrain, winds around a small mountain and returns to the finish line through sandy desert trails and washes. The elevation varies from about 4,100 to 5,300 feet. This year, the course will be extended from 25 to 26.2 miles. While now marathon length, the memorial march is not a sanctioned marathon.

Military marchers are required to wear full field gear in both divisions, and all marchers entered in heavy division categories must carry 35-pound rucksacks. Contact the White Sands Missile Range public affairs office for category details, event rules and entry fees.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NASA-MCDONNELL DOUGLAS TOTALLY REUSABLE ROCKET
TO TEST ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY MATERIALS, COMPONENTS
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., July 11, 1996 Advanced technology components will be put to the test during the 2:30 p.m., MDT, Friday, July 12 flight test of the NASA-McDonnell Douglas vertical-takeoff, vertical-landing rocket at the U.S. Army White Sands Missile Range, N.M. "DC-X and DC-XA flight tests are unlike any other launch vehicle test programs, and more closely resemble an aircraft flight test program," said David Schweikle, Delta Clipper-Experimental Advanced (DC-XA) program manager. "Each flight becomes increasingly more complex as the flight envelope is expanded." During Friday's flight the rocket's nose will make a sweeping motion as it rotates from an upright position. By performing an angle-of-attack sweep of 50 degrees engineers will be able to evaluate dynamic forces on the test vehicle. "Ground tests and computer simulations can provide us with valuable data about the performance of the launch vehicle, but nothing can match up to the real-world dynamic conditions of flight tests," said Schweikle. Additional tests during the flight will include aeroflap actuation and differential throttling of the Clipper Graham's four engines. The aeroflaps are located near the base of the cone-shaped rocket and can be used to control flight.
