Fine Arts' Finest
CONCERT SHOW CASES STUDENTS
Fine Arts' Finest, an annual celebration of scholarship donors and their recipients, was held January 23 in Keller Hall. By showcasing students in action, the College of Fine Arts can easily demonstrate how scholarship funds are used. Participation included representatives from almost every discipline/department. Michaela Koerner, a music and theatre double major, is the Ana Chavira Memorial Award recipient. She sang classical and musical theater pieces. Susan Erickson, master of fine arts candidate in dramatic writing, is a Thelma and Edmund Evans scholarship recipient who wrote a one-act play performed by tow other theatre students. Aaron Fry, a doctoral candidate in art history, received the Henry Luce Scholarship for Doctoral Dissertation Candidates Stydying American Art. He discussed his dissertation subject, " The Kiowa Five," Native american painters of Oklahoma.
Dance major Jessica Jahner has Daniel Blumenfeld and Friends of Dance scholarships. She choreographed and performed a piece that evoked her flamenco and modern dance training. Rounding out the evening was a Brahms movement from the Abe Franck String Quartet, made up of music students Mabio Duarte, Mariusz Kozak, James Harvey and Ben Vickers.
Celebrating our students and the people who help them through generous scholarship donations was a treat. To find out more about making a scholarship gift, please call Sara McClure at (505) 277-7320, or send her an e-mail at

Forthcoming History of the Society to be published 2004.
To mark the Centenary of the Society in 2004, a prestigious volume, a history of the Society, is in course of preparation. The intention is to illustrate the book with at least one example of the work of every member, past and present, and also those who were invited to submit work to exhibitions prior to 1954, when this practice ceased. It is hoped that friends and relatives of past Lake Artists' members, also buyers, may be able to help in locating works. Below is a list of past members and invitees. If you own or know the whereabouts of works by any of these artists, the author of the book, Jane Renouf, will be very pleased to hear from you. In the case of the more obscure past members, this may be the only way to find examples of their work. Please help if you can and if you could do so as soon as possible, this would be much appreciated. All information will be treated as confidential. We are aware that some of the artists on the list are represented in public collections, but we would still be pleased to know of any privately owned works. Past Members (membership dates in brackets) Mr John Abbot, (1939-1956)

RECALL OLD ARMY DAYS : Fortieth Reunion of Men of 15 th Regiment. Observe Anniversary of Balls Bluff. Gen. J. W. Kimball Reelected President. Contributed by Charlene Olexiewicz , descendant of Church Howe The 40 th annual reunion of the 15 th regiment, Massachusetts volunteers, was in Worcester yesterday. The reunions are usually Oct. 21, the anniversary of the battle of Balls Bluff, near Leesburg, Va., in which the regiment lost 310 men, but the 21 st falling on Sunday this year the reunion was advanced to the day previous. The steady rainfall did not keep the veterans at home, and members of the regiment were present in large numbers, and beside the routine business, the splendid dinner and the speechmaking, swapped reminiscences and fought some of the old battles over again. At 10:30 a.m., the veterans assembled at the board of trade rooms, Foster street, for a business session. Gen. John W. KIMBALL, president of the regimental association, not having arrived from Fitchburg, comrade W. G. WATERS, Santa Barbara, Cal., was called to the chair amid rousing cheers. He opened the meeting by a few introductory remarks, and the minutes of the meeting of a year ago were read by Secretary Edward A. RICE, Worcester. A committee on nominations was appointed, consisting of the following:

    In So Many Ways!
    Kudos to . . .
Robert Bruner , a Boy Scout working on his Eagle, recently organized a drive for video movies and audio books, and through his drive and diligence, collected over 500 video movies, and 100 auido books. What a great addition to our collections! Thanks, Robert!! We recently received a donation of $5,000 which was designated to pay the clerks on the Circulation Desk a really big boost in our funds! Thanks so much!! Glenn Galloway and his helper, Larry Futerfas have put in yoeman service in creation of our new library shelving from Hockaday. They have to be disassembled there, trucked over to our site, and reassembled here quite a job! And that is not to mention that all the books where they are going have to be temporarily moved, the old shelving taken out, and then the books reshelved on the new shelves. But what a difference the make!! Thanks, guys!! Terry Davenport is providing the funding for four brand-new permanent bookshelves, which will be used in the present location, and then transferred to our future permanent location, when it is built. Also for the wonderful children's table and four colorful chairs! Thanks, Terry!
Dan Lovejoy and his daughter Terry Davenport who donated money for a few months of telephone service at the UP Public Library. We're now connected to the outside world! Our phone number at the UP Public Library is 214-363-9095.

Summers in command. Departing New London 24 April 1946, Cusk made an extended cruise through the Caribbean Sea, and arrived at San Diego 6 June 1946. She sailed to Alaska and northern waters between 16 July and 20 August, then carried out local operations out of San Diego. A pioneer in the missile field, Cusk was designated SSG-348, 20 January 1948 and was the first submarine to launch a guided missile from her own deck, a forerunner of the ballistic missile submarines of the future. She entered Mare Island Naval Shipyard for extensive modernization in 1954, but remained in the missile program because of her special guidance equipment although redesignated SS-348, 1 July 1954. Cusk arrived at Pearl Harbor, her new home port, 13 May 1957. Continuing her missile experiments she operated in Hawaiian waters except for a cruise to San Diego in 1957 and duty in the Far East in 1958 and 1960.

Laid down on 30 May 1951 in the yard of Cook, Welton and Gemmell, in the Yorkshire town of Beverley, HMS BRONINGTON was launched two years later on the 19 March 1953 by Mrs W G John, wife of the Director, Naval Constructors. Completed in June 1954, the ship was renamed HMS HUMBER and assigned for four years to the 101st Minesweeping Squadron, in the RNVR Humber Division, based in Hull. During this period, she won the Thornycroft Trophy for minesweeping excellence, against competition from both regular and reserve units. Reverting to her original name in 1958, HMS BRONINGTON rejoined the Fleet and served in various squadrons before entering refit in 1963 to begin her minehunter conversion. Alterations included the fitting of an enclosed bridge, a tripod mast and the latest sonar. In her new role, HMS BRONINGTON saw service in the 1960s and 1970s around the coasts of Britain and north western Europe and Scandinavia. After a major refit in 1974 in Gibraltar, the ship returned to home waters in the 1st Mine Counter Measures Squadron and in 1976 embarked her most famous Commanding Officer for an active and varied year's programme. In the 1980s, in her final active years, HMS BRONINGTON deployed to the Mediterranean as part of the 2nd Mine Counter Measures Squadron, spent a period detached in the NATO Standing Naval Force Channel and was employed for a time as a member of the Fishery Protection Squadron. She entered Portsmouth to pay off on 30 June 1988 after more than 30 years' service.

HISTORY OF KNAPP' S CREEK COMMUNITY (Consisting of "The Hills", Frost, Knapp's Creek, and Minnehaha Neighborhoods)
Written by Enid Harper in 1924
In the eastern part of Pocahontas County, West Virginia, is Knapp's Creek which has its source in the Alleghany Mountains about five miles above Frost. Its two branches unite at Frost from which place it continues to flow along the base of the mountains to the place where it empties into the Greenbrier River at Marlinton, a distance of almost twenty miles from Frost. The East fork of the creek is fed by a spring which comes forth out of the rugged mountain side near Paddys Knob, a peak with an elevation of 4450 feet. One of the principal tributaries of Knapp's Creek is Douthard's Creek of the Minnehaha neighborhood which carries with it the waters of Cochran's Creek. At Huntersville Knapp's Creek receives two other streams, Brown's Creek fron one side and Cumming's Creek from the other. Springs Along the valley are numerous limestone springs, the waters of which are cold, an indication of purity. These help to make the creek larger. The first of them is a bold spring gushing out from under a hill near the fine home of S. Gibson. Further down the valley we find the stream called Mill Run near I. B. Moore's which receives water fron a number of springs within a half mile. Next is the Mill Run at D. W. Dever's flowing through his farm where fine cattle graze. From here we go on to W. G. Ruckman's where there is another stream of about equal volume. The source of it is also a magnificent never-failing spring.

History of the Vessel M1115 - 'Old Quarter Past Eleven' Laid down on 30th May 1951 in the yard of Cook, Welton and Gemmell, in the Yorkshire town of Beverly, HMS Bronington was launched two years later on 19th March 1953 by Mrs. W G John, wife of the Director of Naval Constructors. Completed in in June 1954, the ship was renamed HMS Humber and assigned for four years to the 101st Minesweeping Squadron, in the RNVR Humber Division, based in Hull. During this period, she won the Thornycroft Trophy for minesweeping excellence, against competition from both regular and reserve units. Reverting to her original name in 1958, HMS Bronington rejoined the Fleet and served in various squadrons before entering refit in 1963 to begin minehunter conversion. Alterations included the fitting of an enclosed bridge, tripod mast and the latest sonar.
