his fishing house on the Dove. He died in his daughter’s house at Winchester on, the 15th of December 1683, and was buried in the cathedral. It~is characteristic of his kindly nature that he left his property at Shalford for the benefit of the poor of his native town.. The best-known old edition of the Angler is J. Major’s (2nd ed., I 824). The book was edited by Andrew Lang in 1896, and various modern editions have appeared. The standard biography is that by Sir Harris Nicolas, prefixed to an edition of the Angler (1836). There are notices also, with adc, itional scraps of fact, annexed to two American editions, Bethune’s (1847) and Dowling’s (1857). An edition of Walton’s Lives, by G. Sampson, appeared in 1903.

    Izaak Walton
    Profile
Born on August 9th 1593 at St Mary, near Stafford , to Jervis Walton, of a yeoman family, little is known of Walton's childhood or education. Apprenticed at an early age to an ironmonger in London, he eventually went into trade on his own account with a shop in Fleet Street and in 1618 became a Freeman of the Ironmongers' Company. Through his friendship with the vicar of this parish, then John Donne, Walton became acquainted with Michael Drayton, Ben Jonson, Henry Wotton and other authors, and seems to have been accepted as a member of the current literary group. His first known published work was his memoir of Wotton, which was prefixed to a posthumous edition of his poems in 1640. After the Royalist defeat at Marston Moor in 1644, Walton decided to leave London for a while, and bought a holding in Staffordshire, which remained his occasional home, although he returned to London the next year. Having married in 1626, Walton had lost his wife, Rachel Floyd, and all seven of their children by 1640: he married again in 1646, and a son and daughter of this second marriage reached adulthood. After the death of his second wife, he retired, making his home for some years with George Morley, the Bishop of Winchester, but also spending long periods with his friend Charles Cotton fishing on the Dove River, on the boundary between Staffordshire and Derbyshire. He died at the age of 90 in Winchester, leaving provision in his will for the benefit of the poor of Stafford.

In 1922 a group of individuals in this country inspired by Izaak Walton’s writing formed the Izaak Walton League of America dedicated to the preservation of clean water and natural resources. One of its members, A.F. Knotts, came to the area known today as Yankeetown to fish and hunt. Because of his love of the area and his desire to share in its beauty with his northern friends, he decided to build a lodge at which they could all stay. A.F. and his nephew, Eugene, started clearing the thick vegetation on a piece of land on the Withlacoochee River.

    - Peter Browning, Place Names of the Sierra Nevada "Izaak Walton (1593-1683) English biographer, who is best known for THE COMPLEAT ANGLER (1653), a classic guide to joys of fishing with over 300 new printings. It combines practical information about angling with folk lore, pastoral interludes of song, quotations from several writers, and glipses of an idyllic rural life of well-kept inns and tuneful milkmaids. Walton was born in Stafford. His father died before Izaak was three, and he had probably some schooling in Stafford. In the 1610s he was a proprietor of an ironmonger's shop in London, and in 1618 he became a freeman of the Ironmonger's Company, eventually making himself prosperous through his own drapery business. Despite his modest education Walton read widely, and associated with men of learning. Until 1643 he lived in the parish of St. Dunstan, where Jihn Donne was a vicar, and the two become friends. When Sir Henry Wotton (1568-1639), poet and distinguished Provost of Eton, died, Walton continued Wotton's biography of Donne. It appeared as a preface to a volume of Donne's sermons, enlarged later, and published separately in 1658. Walton wrote also other biographical works about such persons as the poet and Walton's fishing companion George Herbert, Robert Sanderson, bishop of Lincoln, Henry Wotton, and theologian Richard Hooker.

English biographer, who is best known for THE COMPLEAT ANGLER (1653), a classic guide to the joys of fishing with over 300 new printings. In combines practical information about angling with folklore. The story of three friends, travelling through the English countryside, is enlivened by occasional songs, ballads, quotations from authors, and glimpses of an idyllic and now lost rural life. "Indeed, my good scholar, we may say of angling, as Dr. Boteler said of strawberries, " Doubtless God could have made a better berry, but doubtless God never did "; and so, if I might be judge, God never did make a more calm, quiet, innocent recreation than angling."

Walton, Izaak 1593-1683, English writer. He wrote one of the most famous books in the English language, The Compleat Angler; or, the Contemplative Man's Recreation. The first edition appeared in 1653, and it was reissued frequently with additional material; the last edition in Walton's lifetime appeared in 1676. The book not only describes the technique of angling, but draws a picture of peace and simple virtue that was Walton's protest against the civil wars taking place at the time. He also wrote several biographies, including ones of John Donne (1640), Sir Henry Wotton (1651), and George Herbert (1670), all of whom were his friends. See study by David Novarr (1958); John R.
