View Shopping Cart/CheckoutWinner, 1994 PRINT CERTIFICATE OF DESIGN EXCELLENCE The first trade edition of these wildly imaginative tales from the eighteenth-century originator of the Gothic genre. Hieroglyphic Tales, seven fanciful tales by Horace Walpole, have a fanciful history of their own: privately printed in an edition of seven, they were distributed to a few friends only after their author's death. Walpole himself offers this description in his preface: "The Hieroglyphic Tales were undoubtedly written a little before the creation of the world, and have ever since been preserved, by oral tradition, in the mountains of Crampcraggiri, an uninhabited island, not yet discovered." Newly discovered, these tales are now available, alongside equally fanciful illustrations by Jill McElmurry, in a charming gift edition, proving true Walpole's prediction that the Hieroglyphic Tales "will be treated with due reverence some hundred years hence."

Horace Walpole
Walpole, Horace (1717-1797), was a noted English letter writer, author, and art lover. Even at a time when personal letters were considered a minor art form, Walpole's huge correspondence is remarkable. His witty letters provide an entertaining documentary of life in English high society. They report social and political gossip, and express Walpole's opinions on literature and the arts. As a scholar fascinated by medieval life, Walpole greatly influenced the Gothic revival of the late 1700's. He transformed Strawberry Hill, his house in Twickenham, into a miniature Gothic castle. He built a printing press nearby, and published many of his own writings. His most influential literary work is The Castle of Otranto (1764). This tale of terror and the supernatural was the first of what became known as Gothic novels. Walpole was born in London. He was the youngest son of Sir Robert Walpole, the first prime minister of Great Britain. He served in Parliament from 1741 to 1768. In 1791, he succeeded to the family title as the fourth Earl of Orford. Source: World Book Encyclopedia 1997

A study of Horace Walpole's Gothic drama, The Mysterious Mother . "While a psychoanalytic or personal reading of the play can only envisage it as a direct expression of Walpole's mental life, conscious or unconscious, the realization of the play as a collective document should stress to us that the play is open to different kinds of engagement. Its intense portrayal of family trauma, its fascination with verbal power, and its intertextual fusion of Greek and French dramatic material in a new Gothic form should point us beyond the temptation to reduce the play to a document of self-recognition."
