THORSTEIN VEBLEN One of Wisconsin's most controversial figures, Thorstein Bunde Veblen, was born near here July 30, 1857. In 1865 the Veblen family moved to Minnesota where Thorstein graduated from college in 1880. He was a deep thinker, usually lonely and always in debt. After receiving a Ph.D. in philosophy from Yale in 1884, Veblen taught in several colleges. He was not a popular teacher but attracted dedicated followers to his extreme social and economic ideas. In 1899 his book "The Theory of the Leisure Class" created immediate controversy. During much of his life, Veblen remained estranged from society. His pale, sick face, beard, loose-fitting clothes, shambling gait, weak voice and desperate shyness enhanced this estrangement and deepened his loneliness. Yet the society which did not accept Veblen the man did come to value the products of his penetrating mind. His books and articles have been described as perhaps "the most considerable and creative body of social thought that America has produced." Foundations of Business Thought Thorstein Bunde Veblen (1857-1929) was an American economist and social scientist. He is known for his historical investigation of the economic structure of society and for his analysis of the contemporary economic system. Veblen was born a poor farm boy in Cato, Wisconsin. He was the sixth child of Norwegian immigrants. He was a odd child, lazy, and addicted to reading. He spent much of his time alone and had not perfected English as his second tongue until he went to college. He was educated at Carleton College, Johns Hopkins, Yale, and Cornell universities. Upon his graduaton from Yale in 1884 with his Ph.D., Veblen went into isolation for nearly seven years. Most of that time was spent reading. Veblen has been described as a "detached stranger in the bustling community in which he lived." He was also known to be uninvolved, distant, and disinterested. He had no close friends and many eccentricities. Despite these characteristics, many women found him attractive. From 1892 to 1906, Veblen taught political economy at the University of Chicago. He taught economics at Stanford University from 1906 to 1909 and at the University of Missouri from 1911 to 1918. He was on the staff of the New School for Social Research, in New York City, from 1919 to 1926, when he retired.

Famous Carleton Economists of the Past
John Bates Clark (1847-1938) played an important role in the development of marginal productivity by applying the Ricardian theory of rent to labor and capital. Among his works were The Philosophy of Wealth (1886), The Distribution of Wealth (1899) and Essentials of Economic Theory (1907). His son, John Maurice Clark, also became a noted economist. Clark was educated at Amherst College and at the University of Heidelberg in Germany. He taught at Carleton from 1875 to 1881, and then moved on to teach at Smith College, Amherst, Johns Hopkins and Columbia. His favorite pupil at Carleton was Thorstein Veblen. Thorstein Veblen
The Veblen-Clark Lecture

Thorstein Veblen (1857-1929)
Thorstein Veblen was odd man out in late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century American economics. His position on the fringe started early. Veblen grew up in a Norwegian immigrant farming community in Wisconsin. He spoke only Norwegian at home and did not learn English until his teens. He studied economics under John Bates Clark, a leading neoclassical economist, but rejected his ideas. Later he did his graduate work at Johns Hopkins University under Charles Sanders Peirce, the founder of the pragmatist school in philosophy, and at Yale University under laissez-faire proponent William Graham Sumner. He repudiated their views as well. Veblen is best known for his book The Theory of the Leisure Class. In it he introduced the term "conspicuous consumption." Conspicuous consumption was consumption undertaken to make a statement to others about one's class or accomplishments. This term, more than any other, is what Veblen is known for. Veblen did not reject economists' answers to the questions they posed. Rather, he thought their questions were too narrow. Veblen wanted economists to try to understand the social and cultural causes and effects of economic changes. What social and cultural causes were responsible for the shift from hunting and fishing to farming, for example, and what were the social and cultural effects of this shift? Veblen was singularly unsuccessful at getting economists to focus on such questions. His failure may explain the sarcastic tone toward his fellow economists in his writing.
