LANCELOT
Lancelot is the greatest of Arthur's knights. Son of King Ban of Benwick, he is known as Lancelot of the Lake or Lancelot du Lac because he was raised by the Lady of the Lake. Among his many adventures are the rescue of the abducted Queen Guinevere from Meleagant, an unsuccessful quest for the Holy Grail and the rescue of the queen after she is condemned to be burned to death for adultery. Lancelot is loved by Elaine of Astolat, who dies because her love is unrequited. Elaine, the daugher of King Pelles, tricks Lancelot into sleeping with her and from that union Galahad is born. His love for Guinevere ultimately brings about the downfall of Arthur's realm.

A Wedding Music Guide for Brides
Baroque composers wrote a great deal of ceremonial music, either as royal court musicians, or as church musicians. The nobility required their court composers to write new music for weddings, coronations, funerals, and other special occasions. Both Protestant and Catholic worship services of this era were filled with new music written by some of the greatest composers the world has ever known! The wonderful tunes used in this guide are available from the Miller-Rowe Consort. Their popular CD, Mostly Baroque - Music for Weddings Click here for audio samples!
The Prelude:
Before the ceremony begins, the musicians play approximately thirty minutes of Prelude music. These selections, ranging from joyful to serene, are performed during the seating of the guests and set the mood for the ceremony to follow. Though optional, some brides choose a special piece for the seating of the mothers to end the Prelude. Prelude Selections: Air on the G String - Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
This “Air” comes from Bach’s Orchestral Suite #3 in D major. Its popular title “Air on the G String” is from an arrangement for violin and piano by the great German violinist August Wilhelmj who played most of the melody notes on the “G” string of the violin.

Thought for the Month A Mile With Me O who will walk a mile with me
Along life's merry way?
A comrade blithe and full of glee,
Who dares to laugh out loud and free, And let his frolic fancy play, Like a happy child, through the flowers gay That fill the field and fringe the way Where he walks a mile with me. And who will walk a mile with me Along life's weary way? A friend whose heart has eyes to see The stars shine out o'er the darkening lea, And the quiet rest at the end o' the day, - A friend who knows, and dares to say, The brave, sweet words that cheer the way Where he walks a mile with me. With such a comrade, such a friend, I fain would walk till journey's end, Through summer sunshine, winter rain, And then? - Farewell, we shall meet again!

AMERICAN RELIGIOUS HISTORY Primary materials related to American religious history in the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, July, 1992: Sermons Sermons in the Manuscripts Division are to be found among family papers, in individual collections, in scrapbooks and among General Manuscripts (Miscellaneous). Most original material is by Princeton University affiliated clergymen. The Stewart M. Robinson Collection of Colonial Sermons contains copies of published and unpublished material dating back to 1615. Several collections of family papers, including William Tennent (1740-1777) of New Jersey and South Carolina, and Henry Van Dyke (1852-1933), pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn, also provide examples. Sermons dating from the 19th century are to be found among the papers of Princeton graduates such as Charles Woodruff Shields (1825-1904) and Eli Field Cooley (1781-1860), and of John T. Duffield, Princeton math professor from 1849-1898. The scrapbooks of David Laurence Pierson (1865-1938) also contain examples. Sermons from the 20th century are in the papers of Walter Lowrie (1868-1959) and Paul Martin (1862-1956). Diaries and Journals There are over 100 collections containing diaries and journals in the Manuscripts Division, many of them with religious content. Some of the most important are to be found in family papers of the Howells of Morris County, N.J. (1715-1958), and Martines and Dyckmans of Westchester and Dutchess Counties, N.Y. (1782-1906). A small number of journals kept by local women are to be found among General Manuscripts (Bound). Many record the chapter and verse of lessons and accompanying sermons from church services attended. The collections also include two journals of English evangelical minister John Newton (1725-1807), author of the words to "Amazing Grace."

    Across the sea;
    And when the waves reflect the moon's pale glimmer,
    I think of thee.
    I see thy form, when down the distant highway The dust-clouds rise; In deepest night, above the mountain by-way, I see thine eyes. I hear thee when the ocean-tides returning Loudly rejoice; And on the lonely moor, in stillness yearning, I hear thy voice. I dwell with thee: though thou art far removed, Yet art thou near. The sun goes down, the stars shine out, - Beloved, Ah, wert thou here! LOVE'S REASON For that thy face is fair I love thee not; Nor yet because the light of thy brown eyes Hath gleams of wonder and of glad surprise, Like woodland streams that cross a sunlit spot: Nor for thy beauty, born without a blot, Most perfect when it shines through no disguise Pure as the star of Eve in Paradise, - For all these outward things I love thee not: But for a something in thy form and face
