The National Atomic Museum
Hours:
9 a.m to 5 p.m. every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's and Easter.
Entry fee: None.
Directions: From Downtown Albuquerque drive east to Wyoming and then south to the Wyoming Gate at Kirtland Air Force Base. You'll have to stop at the guard post and receive a free pass to enter the base. The museum is about a mile beyond the gate. More information: National Atomic Museum, P.O. Box 5400, Kirtland AFB, Albuquerque, N.M. 87115, Phone 505 845-6670. By Frank Zoretich Originally published as part of the "Cheap Thrills Adventure Club" in the Albuquerque Journal So far, only two cities have been destroyed by nuclear attack. Considering the possibilities - and anyone who every 'ducked-and-covered' beneath the flimsy shelter of a schoolroom desk has considered the possibilities - that 'only' has been the good news for years. At the National Atomic Museum, located behind the gates of Kirtland Air Force Base on the southeast edge of Albuquerque, interpretive exhibits and a sizable array of weaponry tell the story of "the complete history of U.S. nuclear developments." There's special emphasis, of course, on the role New Mexico played in World War II development of The Bomb:

The National Infantry Museum, established at the Home of the U.S. Infantry in 1959, has just one mission: to honor the infantryman and his more than two centuries of proud service to the nation. The museum offers visitors 30,000 square feet of exhibit space within an impressive historic masonry building that features large, well-lighted, carpeted galleries. The building, which is climate controlled, is accessible to those using wheelchairs. An elevator serves all four floors of the museum. Over 100,000 visitors each year trace with pride the footsteps of infantrymen from the 1607 wilderness of Virginia to the 1991 sands of the Persian Gulf, from the French Charleville flintlock musket to the atomic Davy Crockett, from victory at Yorktown to events in Vietnam. Visitors are exposed to an ever-changing kaleidoscope of edged weapons, uniforms, footwear, mess equipment, fine oil paintings, firearms, bronzes, helmets, and vehicles from a 1902 Studebaker Utility Wagon to the legendary Jeep. Family members with different tastes will soon discover that the museum is much more than a collection of things painted Army green. Around the next corner you may see a petrified tree, an 1825 coverlet, a bronze by Davidson or Fraser, a document signed by John Hancock, George Washington, or Franklin D. Roosevelt, a bust of Adolph Hitler, a gas mask for a horse, a Medal of Honor, a French tapestry, an M-1 Garand, Springfield musket, or M-16 rifle. You might see an 1840 Chickering piano, a prisoner of war uniform, a set of Civil War dominos, playing cards, a painted eagle drum, or a bugle. The museum shows not only the weapons, uniforms, and personal equipment of U.S. infantrymen, but also that of the enemies who chose to test our resolve.

What is Energy Kid's Corner Milestones Energy Quiz ... About Energy Ant and Us A Report From Energy Ant - How I Spent Last Summer!!! I had a very busy and exciting summer in 2001! I spent two weeks with teachers from across the country learning about energy. The teachers took a number of field trips, so I got to see so much (from an "ant's-eye view," of course). Here are some of the trip highlights:
The National Atomic Museum has great resources and exhibits about the United States' use of nuclear energy for all kinds of things. It is no surprise that the National Atomic Museum is in New Mexico, because this state is also the home of Los Alamos National Laboratory, where the U.S. developed the first nuclear weapon. This museum takes you on a tour through the development of nuclear weapons to today's use of nuclear power - power released from the nucleus of an atom - to generate electricity to heat and cool our homes, make our lamps and home computers work and more. Nuclear power provides many things to the United States and other countries around the world - from nuclear medicine to devices to test bridges for structural integrity - harnessing the power of the atom was one of the biggest discoveries of the last 100 years.

Antinuke group protests U.S. sales of A-bomb souvenirs
Aug. 4, Kyodo - A major Japanese antinuclear group on Wednesday accused a state-run U.S. museum of insulting A-bomb victims for selling earring replicas of the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
At a press conference, the Communists-backed Japan Council against A and H Bombs (Gensuikyo) said it recently learned of the sales from the National Atomic Museum's Web site.
It said the museum is selling earring replicas of ''Little Boy'' and ''Fat Man,'' the two bombs dropped on the Japanese cities on Aug. 6 and Aug. 9, 1945, as well as ornaments to honor the air force unit assigned to drop the bombs.
''We are enraged by the United States, which proudly presents replicas of nuclear weapons without showing any repentance for the bombing,'' Gensuikyo official Koichi Akamatsu said.
The group, supported by the Japanese Communist Party, said it would adopt a resolution against the museum's sales of the goods at its ongoing international conference in Hiroshima and lobby the Japanese government to urge Washington to stop the sales.
The sales represent ''the U.S. government's justification of dropping the A-bombs and defiance of the antinuclear movement,'' Akamatsu said.

    - Wendy Doyle This exhibit’s purpose is to provide the museum visitor with the basic knowledge of radiation in an enjoyable format, so that unfounded fears can be replaced with facts. With displays ranging from the use of radiation to detect and cure diseases to irradiated foods and radioactive consumer products, the exhibit strives to explain to the visitor that radiation exists in many aspects of our world, both in natural forms and man made forms. It further explains how this radiation affects each of us. The mission of the National Atomic Museum is to serve as America’s museum resource for nuclear history and science. The museum presents exhibits and quality educational programs that convey the diversity of individuals and events that shape the historical and technical context of the nuclear age. More than twenty percent of museum visitors are international and U.S. scientists and researchers attending meetings at the nearby Sandia National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratory. In addition, Albuquerque’s Mayor is an active supporter of the museum – his enthusiasm generates statewide publicity, which reaches the 6,600 employees at Sandia and 9,600 employees and contractors at Los Alamos.
