A "Curiosity of Literature."
A singular example of precocious literary development is found in the work of a negro girl, Phillis Wheatley . Contents DESCRIPTION Back To Top Widely known as the anthology that best meshes tradition with innovation, The American Tradition in Literature enters its fifth decade of leadership among textbook anthologies of American Literature. Literary merit remains the guiding principle of selection; flexibility of organization, with Walt Whitman represented in both volumes, continues to be one of the text's hallmarks. KEY FEATURES Back To Top
  • Expanded Photo Program: Meaningful photos- historical photos, frontispieces to first editions, works of art, and more- are treated as visual texts: thought-provoking captions provide cultural context and amplify the authors' commentary on literature.
  • Chronologies: Timelines introducing major historical periods and one complete timeline in a new Appendix help students put literature selections in context.

Theatre History II—Study Guide Chapter 12- Theater in Europe and The U.S. early 19 th Century Romanticism- Literary and dramatic movement begins in Germany. Also know as "Storm and Stress". The principle ideas of the Romantic Movement are:
    • Since a higher absolute being created us, there is a higher truth to our natural existence. Therefore, one can also find truth in things that can not be seen or observed. Nature is very important. The less spoiled by man, the more we can observe truth in the natural state. Contrary to the neoclassical ideal, Country is preferred to City. The freedom of "artistic expression" makes us "whole again." Art helps Man realize his potential. Great importance is placed on art and imagination as a "superior" for of knowledge.
The Romantic’s vision could not be fully realized as drama because of the limitations of the theater. Theater was considered too restrictive. However, Romantics considered Shakespeare’s play to be models of "freedom from restraint."
August Wilhelm Schlegel August Wilhelm Schlegel—( critic/translator) Schlegel formulated and disseminated romantic theory in Germany. He was also the first critic to use Classicism and Romanticism as polar terms. He considered Shakespeare "the greatest playwright", responsible for translating 17 of his plays. These translations became the mainstay of German repertory for many years.
