B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) Popular British author, who described realistically Victorian world. Trollope's best known stories were set in the imaginary English county of Barsetshire. In his autobiography (1883) Trollope wrote, that the novelist's task is "to make his readers so intimately acquainted with his characters that the creation of his brain should be to them speaking, moving, living, human creatures." Trollope is notable for having developed the chronicle form of fiction. The Barsetshire novels were the first serial fiction in English literature. "It is a comfortable feeling to know that you stand on your own ground. Land is about the only thing that can't fly away." (from The Last Chronicle of Barset Anthony Trollope was born in London. His father, a fellow of New College, Oxford, failed both as a lawyer and as a farmer. The family's poverty made Trollope miserable at the rigid public social hierarchy in Harrow and Winchester. Sometimes his parents could not afford to pay their son's school fees. After financial troubles the family moved to Belgium, but returned back with mother and children when the father died. His mother, Frances Trollope (1780-1863), took her three youngest children to America to assist in the founding of the city of New Harmony, Memphis. The venture failed, and she traveled for fifteen months in America. In 1832, back in England, she published

Anthony Trollope, British novelist (1815-1882)
A combination of misinformation, snobbery, caste-arrogance, Trollope's stubborn honesty which led him to refuse to mystify his art or the workings of his imagination, and politicised literary scholarship has led to the paradox at the heart of Trollope studies: he is one of the greatest Victorian novelists whose books have been read, respected, and enjoyed by an enormous number of readers since first they were published; at the same time, he is continually talked about in terms which denigrate and even dismiss a body of work remarkable for its scope, intelligence, and ability to sustain his readers' deep engagement and teach us about Trollope's world and ourselves. Most of the time Anthony Trollope felt only impatience when it came to people who wanted to take his picture. He particularly disliked photography: 'I hate very much indeed I have written a book recording how a group of people responded in cyberspace to a few of Trollope's books . It is my attempt to share with yet more people an appreciation and knowledge of this man's life and work. It seems to me so appropriate that Trollope here becomes another figure to be discovered in an arena not controlled by the thresholds of coterie establishments, one open to all those who can get into the World Wide Web through a computer terminal somewhere on this earth. Trollope has mostly not met his readers among the captive audiences of school syllabi. His books are too filled with adult depictions of sex, ambition, and politics to appeal to people who look for books which won't offend anyone in central areas of our life. They are too uncompromising in their adherence to a disillusioned reality, and the solace and strengthening they offer is one calculated not to uphold anything inhumane.

    Anthony Trollope
    Novelist
The great Victorian writer has a short but significant Belfast connection. A full-time official of the Post Office, in the autumn of 1853 he took up the post of Surveyor for the entire northern half of Ireland, working from the newly-built Custom House in Belfast. He was already the author of three unsuccessful novels, but found his true voice in the city, with The Warden (which was almost all written there), the first novel in his great Barsetshire series (including, of course, Barchester Towers). Trollope spent much of his time on horseback, covering his vast territory, but when he was in Belfast his office in the Custom House is believed to have been behind the two first-floor windows to the extreme right of the south-facing (right) facade.
Location of plaque: Under the balustrade on the west side of the Custom House, to the right of the steps.

Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) Trollope was an English novelist whose popular success concealed until long after his death the nature and extent of his literary merit. He wrote convincing novels of political life as well as studies that show great psychological penetration. One of his greatest strengths was a steady, consistent vision of the social structures of Victorian England. Related Categories:
