Jeffery Deaver
Reviewed by Mike Jecks All too often when I read a book by someone who has become famous, I find myself wondering what was the basis of his or her fame. The two main characters in this book are two whom Deaver has used before. Lincoln Rhyme, a consultant on "Criminalistics" to the NYPD usually, is now being consulted by the FBI and Immigration as well. A leading "snakehead", or transporter of illegal immigrants, was shipping some Chinese to America. Known as a murderer and rapist, all the major agencies want to catch him, but they turn to Rhyme when all their other sources fail. Rhyme is taciturn, ironic, and basically, so far as I could see, mostly pretty obnoxious, but because of that he’s also attractive in his eccentricity. In addition he’s all but paralysed, able to move only one finger. All his powers have been concentrated in his brain. Fuzhou Dragon bringing the illegals in towards the coast suddenly explodes, rapidly sinking, she is there, quickly running over the scene and finding, to her surprise, that some of the bodies have been shot.

Home Research Tools Concert Information Composers Francis Thorne Francis Thorne’s music was not performed professionally until he was 40 years old. He had been, respectively, Naval officer, banker, stockbroker, and jazz pianist. Although he had two years of study with Paul Hindemith at Yale, Hindemith discouraged a composing career. It wasn’t until he had private studies with David Diamond in Florence, Italy, that he developed the craftsmanship and confidence to pursue a professional composing career. Thorne’s first orchestral work after completing his studies with Diamond was Elegy for Orchestra . When Eugene Ormandy premiered it with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1964, the Philadelphia Bulletin described it as “deeply felt and effective.” The success of Elegy brought Thorne back from Florence to New York, where he has been combining music administration and composing for over 35 years. His catalogue of well over 100 works includes seven symphonies, fifteen concerti, four string quartets, and the opera Mario and the Magician He has been Executive Director of the Walter M. Naumberg Foundation and the American Composers Alliance, and President and CEO of the American Composers Orchestra since 1976. He also spent two years as Executive Director of Lyn Austin’s Music Theater Group and, for seven years, he ran the Thorne Music Fund which awarded three-year fellowships to American composers of “mature years and recognized accomplishments.” Recipients of these fellowships included Stefan Wolpe, Ben Weber, Lou Harrison, David Diamond, Jacob Druckman, Lucia Dlugoszewski, and Henry Brant among others.

home racing road On the road again - a race recap of 1997 by Paul Boudreau and Brion O'Connor The 1997 road racing season saw a healthy increase in the number of Essex County Velo riders in New England events. ECV was well represented in the local peleton and this year saw several revelations. Emily Thorne had several strong races, consistently placing in the top five. She finished 12th overall in the Stoneyfield Farms Women's Challenge points series in Cat. 4 (out of 146 other competitors). She moved up from a Cat.4 to a 3 just in time for her first attempt at the Killington Stage Race in which she rode in the only women's Category: Pro, 1, 2, 3. Not only did she complete the race, which consisted of 216 miles and 11,000 feet of climbing over five races, but she earned a very respectable 35th place. John Mahoney has established himself as the fastest man in the North Shore with his explosive sprint, winning several Cat.. 5 criteriums, including several Wells Avenue training criteriums (as well as countless town line sprints during the Tuesday night rides), and garnering enough points for an automatic upgrade to Cat. 4. He also got 2nd place overall for his category in the ECV time trial series. Mike Jinks raced consistently this season and turned out to be a great teammate. He was always willing to take a pull at the front to leadout the sprinters. He also improved his time trailing skills, earning 4th place overall in the North Shore Time Trail Series and winning his age group in the Newburyport TT.

home racing kids races The crowd at this ever-so-popular Verge Series Cyclo-Cross Race had just finished watching a shoot-out sprint between Carmen D'Alusio and Mary McConnelough in the Women's Elite Race. They caught their breath and turned away from the tarmac and finish line to re-group for the next race. In just one-half hour, the Elite Men's Race would take place and Marc Gullickson, Todd Wells, Mark McCormack, Jonathan Page and Jackson Stewart, along with 40 other Elite Racers, would provide an hour-long thriller. As the spectators turned around, they encountered a very special moment sponsored by ECV. The crowd was very appreciative of the spunk that these young children exhibited and gave them a big hand. The announcer extrordinaire, Chris Zigmont, added to the excitement of the races with his vivid portrayal of the action as it unfolded. Thanks to ECV, all the children were rewarded with inscripted medals and water bottles. (photo courtesy Paul Weiss The winners of each of the three races received trophies and had their picture taken with Boulder's Marc Gullickson, the winner of the Elite Men's Race and a past Supercup and National Champion.

"For all their fearlessness, sprinters are a delicate breed. At the peak of form they effuse an aura of invincibility, suggesting no bicycle rider ever pedaled as fast. To win, sprinters must have everything: physical condition, confidence, luck, aggression and committed team support. An elusive combination, attainable but not sustainable."David Walsh, Inside the Tour de France Web Pages: Restricted Access Webmaster: Stephen Skory Page Modified: November 25 2002 09:12:24.
