Go, songs, for ended is our brief, sweet play
Text by Francis Thompson Set by Go, songs, for ended is our brief, sweet play; Go, children of swift joy and tardy sorrow: And some are sung, and that was yesterday, And some [are]* unsung, and that may be tomorrow. Go forth; and if it be o'er stony way, Old joy can lend what newer grief must borrow: And it was sweet, and that was yesterday, And sweet is sweet, though purchased with sorrow. Go, songs, and come not back from your far way: And if men ask you why ye smile and sorrow, Tell them ye grieve, for your hearts know Today, Tell them ye smile, for your eyes know Tomorrow. * omitted by Raynor.

Francis Thompson at Boston College
Original Exhibit Summer 2001
This exhibit celebrates the life and work of British Catholic poet Francis Thompson (1859-1907) and the Boston College Library's efforts in acquiring the Francis Thompson Collection. University Librarian Father Terence Connolly, S.J. was a lifelong Thompson scholar and established the Thompson Collection at Boston College with enthusiastic financial support from the Honorable Judge John J. Burns, Mary J. Donnelly and many other contributors. On display are original Thompson manuscripts and letters, photographs, artwork, collections of Thompson's works published both before and after his death, and work by other authors and artists inspired by his poetry. The exhibit is running in conjunction with the recent publication of Dr. Brigid Boardman's The Poems of Francis Thompson (Chestnut Hill, MA: John J. Burns Library, 2001).

McIntyre Professor of English J. Robert Barth, SJ, closed his eyes, inclined his head, and like a wine taster savoring a fine Bordeaux, began to recite in French a sonnet by the 16th-century poet Ronsard.
Rev. J. Robert Barth, SJ (Photo By Lee Pellegrini) "Quand vous serez bien vieille, au soir, à la chandelle," he said. "Assise auprès du feu, devidant et filant..." Fr. Barth said he often introduces students to poetry by presenting verse in a foreign tongue. "You won't understand this," he tells them. "Just listen to the music. "Poetry is like music. It's meant to be heard." That spirit animates Fr. Barth's latest project, a compact-disc recording of read poems by Francis Thompson and Gerard Manley Hopkins, SJ, that he hopes will spark a renewed appreciation of the bard's art at BC and beyond. Released last fall, the recording is available at the Boston College Bookstore for $10, with proceeds benefiting the Burns Library. The CD includes Fr. Barth's readings of a dozen works by the two Catholic poets, including a 12-minute-long rendition of Thompson's "The Hound of Heaven" [see excerpt below] and a 20-minute rendition of Hopkins' "The Wreck of the

    I fled Him, down the nights and down the days;
    I fled Him, down the arches of the years;
    I fled Him, down the labyrinthine ways
    Of my own mind; and in the midst of tears
    I hid from Him, and under running laughter.
    Up vistaed hopes, I sped; And shot precipitated, From those strong Feet that followed, followed after. But with unhurrying chase, Deliberate speed, majestic instancy, They beatand a Voice beat, More instant than the Feet: "All things betray thee, who betrayest Me." I pleaded, outlawwise, By many a hearted casement, curtained red, Trellised with inter-twining charities; Yet was I sore adread Lest, having Him, I must have naught beside.) But, if one little casement parted wide, The gust of his approach would clash it to. Fear wist not to evade, as Love wist to pursue. Across the margent of the world I fled

    The Broadview Anthology of Victorian Poetry and Poetic Theory
    Broadview, 1999, 1492 pp., ISBN 1-55111-100-4, $35.95
    Description:
    The Broadview Anthology of Victorian Poetry and Poetic Theory is the most comprehensive collection of poetry from the period ever published. Included are generous selections from the work of all major poets, and a representation of the work of virtually every poet of significance, from Thomas Ashe at the beginning of the era to Charlotte Mew at its end. The work of Victorian women poets features very prominently, with extensive selections not only of the work of canonical poets such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Christina Rossetti, but also of that of poets such as Augusta Webster for which high claims have recently been made by critics. The anthology reflects (and will contributed to) the ongoing reassessment of the canon that is central to English Studies today; in all sixty-six poets are represented. The editors have included complete works wherever feasible including the complete texts of Tennyson's In Memoriam and of a number of other long poems. A headnote by the editors introduces the work of each poet, and each selection has been newly annotated.

    Francis Thompson's
    Hound of Heaven
    In 1887, Wilfrid Meynell, editor of the literary magazine Merry England, received some poems in the mail. When he was unable to contact the author about publishing his work, Meynell decided to publish them anyway. Once published, he hoped the author would reply.
    He did, but Meynell soon discovered that the author was addicted to laudanum, a then popular opium derivative. Francis Thompson (1859-1907) had studied for the priesthood, but was dismissed as unsuited to the ministry. Later, he trained to be a doctor, but failed. In despair, he became an opium addict, and was soon homeless.
    Meynell and his wife, Alice, took Thompson into their care and arranged medical treatment. He wrote most of his poetry during the next four years, including his most famous work, "The Hound of Heaven." Sadly, Thompson later relapsed into depression and addiction.
    Thompson's best-known poem is quite moving, for it describes the relentless pursuit of the lost by a persistent Lord. I have heard similar sentiments expressed by Christian friends (and actor Dean Jones, well known for his Disney roles, recalled its lines during the crisis leading to his own conversion). As you read the poem, below, contemplate also the tragedy that one who could so well express relentless grace might so miserably fail to apprehend its fruit. From this, take fair warning.

    SUMMER set lip to earth's bosom bare,
    And left the flush'd print in a poppy there;
    Like a yawn of fire from the grass it came,
    And the fanning wind puff'd it to flapping flame.
    With burnt mouth red like a lion's it drank
    The blood of the sun as he slaughter'd sank, And dipp'd its cup in the purpurate shine When the eastern conduits ran with wine. Till it grew lethargied with fierce bliss, And hot as a swinked gipsy is, And drowsed in sleepy savageries, With mouth wide a-pout for a sultry kiss. A child and man paced side by side, Treading the skirts of eventide; But between the clasp of his hand and hers Lay, felt not, twenty wither'd years. She turn'd, with the rout of her dusk South hair, And saw the sleeping gipsy there; And snatch'd and snapp'd it in swift child's whim, With'Keep it, long as you live!'to him. And his smile, as nymphs from their laving meres
