has the most extensive collection of British graphic satire from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries. This includes a comprehensive group of prints by William Hogarth (1697-1764); satirical prints or caricatures by James Gillray (1756-1815), Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827) and George Cruikshank (1792-1878); drawings and lithographs by John 'HB' Doyle (1797-1868), and work by many other artists. The modern use of the word 'cartoon' as applied to humorous or satirical representations, dates from 1843 when John Leech (1817-1864) published a facetious drawing directed against the exhibition of the cartoons, i.e. full-scale preparatory designs, for the decorative scheme proposed for the new Houses of Parliament. From the mid-nineteenth century onwards there are cartoons by many of the generations of contributors to the magazine Punch , which was founded in 1841, including Richard Doyle (1824-1883) and Leech, and later artists such as Charles Keene (1823-1891), George Du Maurier (1834-1896), Phil May (1864-1903) and Sir John Tenniel (1820-1914). Furthermore, there are chromo-lithographs introduced by

The collection includes more than 200 editions of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland usually accompanied by Through the Looking Glass and displays the work of more than 80 illustrators. The collection includes the 1866 official first edition to a calf-bound set that bears Alice Hargreaves' (Alice's married name) signature. The collection also includes parodies and imitations, musical and stage productions, film stills, translations, as well as other works by and about Carroll. In 1965, the collection was donated to the University of British Columbia by the graduating class of 1925 in celebration of their 40th anniversary. Today, this delightful collection can be found in the Special Collections Division.

    Dodgson, Charles Lutwidge (1832-1898)
After three years at Rugby, Dodgson matriculated in 1850 at Christ Church, where he lived almost uninterrruptedly until his death. In 1854 he was placed in the first class in the Final Mathematical School; the next year he became a lecturer in Mathematics, and in 1861 he was ordained Deacon. Intensely shy, his most initmate friends were little girls, of whom he took many photographs. He contributed verse to The Train , a periodical edited by Edmund Yates, who chose Lewis Carroll from four suggested pseudonyms proposed by his contributor - Lewis being derived from Lutwidge by way of Ludovicus and Carroll from Charles (Carolus). Under this name Dodgson wrote Alice's Adventrues in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-glass and What Alice Found There (1871). He also wrote on mathematical subjects, his Euclid and His Modern Rivals appearing in 1879. It is said that Queen Victoria, having told him how much she had enjoyed Alice in Wonderland and that she was looking forward to another work by him, was disconcerted to receive his Syllabus of Plane Algebraical Geometry

This collection consists of autograph letters and envelopes. The majority are letters to Mark Lemon from writers such as William Makepeace Thackeray, Douglas Jerrold, Richard Doyle, John Forster, Shirley Brooks, and several others. A very valuable part of this collection are the six autograph and signed letters of Charles Dickens to his friend Mark Lemon, inviting him to dinner and discussing his writing. Also, this collection includes letters from and to a variety of correspondents, Mark Lemon's Circle, including John Forster, Alfred B. Garrod, Sir Stratford Canning, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Emma C. Roberts, and others; and autograph envelopes from W. Harrison Ainsworth and others. Finally, five original pencil drawings attributed to "Phiz" (Hablot K. Browne?) are present. The collection is arranged chronologically. This collection was purchased from book dealer David Holmes by Kent State University Libraries and the Department of English on December 1995.

    The
    of Alice In Wonderland
There have been any number of illustrators for this delightfully nonsensical tale over the years. The appearance of the characters has also tended to change, according to each artists' style. Each set of illustrations was richly evocative of the tale, however, and each has contributed to our continued enjoyment of this story. The work of several of the earliest illustrators has been chosen for inclusion here, along with two more contemporary artists. Sound a wee bit surreal? Perhaps. But then, so is the story itself. To the best of our knowledge, this BEDTIME-STORY CLASSIC is the only rendering of Alice In Wonderland which successfully melds the nearly complete works of multiple artists with the tale itself.
