SARA TEASDALE 1884-1933
A REED THROUGH WHICH THE GODS MAY BLOW
Born on August 8, 1884, Sara Trevor Teasdale was born to middle-aged parents who did not expect a child so late in life, much less a child with poetic genius.
Raised in comfort and provided with the foundation of excellent education and sanctuary of refined culture, Sara was a typical Victorian girl passionate about literature and botany. Her verses bloomed from a deep emotional nature which often clashed with the restrictive Victorian ethic.
Beauty was her oxygen, and nature was food for her soul. For Sara, both beauty and nature manifested in the Venus de Milo, which she called "the goddess of spiritual love". Despite her Christian background, Sara created an altar to Aphrodite in her room and recited prayers before it. In a letter, she confessed that the goddess had been more real to her "than the virgin." From early childhood into womanhood, Teasdale suffered from sudden chills, fatigue, nervousness and weakness. Her neurasthenia, very similar to the modern epidemic of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, flared up with the slightest emotional stress. It was apparent that her body could not cope with her constant inner battles, and poetry was a source of catharsis. It was not easy being a woman or poet in her time, and like many others, Sara desperately struggled in the trap of expectation, torn between ambition and acceptability. More confident, professionally aggressive women were known to seek debate and voice opinion; because of this assumption that all female writers were the same, Sara did not even consider herself a poet because she avoided controversy, felt shy in the presence of others, and disliked political art.

NIGHTFALL
-by Sara Teasdale (1884-1933)

We will never walk again
As we used to walk at night,
Watching our shadows lengthen
Under the gold street-light
When the snow was new and white. We will never walk again
Slowly, we two,
In spring when the park is sweet
With midnight and with dew,
And the passers-by are few. I sit and think of it all, And the blue June twilight dies, Down in the clanging square A street-piano cries And stars come out in the skies. More Poetry HOME

UNSUNG SONGS
Central Park at Dusk, by John Duke (1899-1984)
John Duke was an American pianist, music educator and a prolific composer of art-songs. During a long career he wrote over two hundred and fifty songs, most of them to verse by his compatriots, such well-known poets as Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, Sara Teasdale and e.e. cummings. But perhaps his best known song is a mellifluous setting of A. E. Housman's Loveliest of Trees , composed in the 1930's and made popular by the noted baritone Lawrence Tibbett. But because many of Duke's songs were cast in a charming lyric style and were graced with pleasant melodies, critics often dismissed them as lacking substance and being of little import. As a result, Duke's copious outpouring of songs has been spottily documented over the years and the composer wasn't even mentioned in the prestigious History of Song , edited by Denis Stevens, in 1960. Happily, the true quality of Duke's music has come to be appreciated with time, and his name now figures appropriately in such excellent studies as The Singer's Guide to The American Art Song, 1870-1980

Author of "Rivers to the Sea", "Helen of Troy and Other Poems", Etc. To E. I have remembered beauty in the night,
Against black silences I waked to see
A shower of sunlight over Italy
And green Ravello dreaming on her height;
I have remembered music in the dark, The clean swift brightness of a fugue of Bach's, And running water singing on the rocks When once in English woods I heard a lark. But all remembered beauty is no more Than a vague prelude to the thought of you You are the rarest soul I ever knew Lover of beauty, knightliest and best; My thoughts seek you as waves that seek the shore, And when I think of you, I am at rest Prefatory Note Beside new poems, this book contains lyrics taken from "Rivers to the Sea", "Helen of Troy and Other Poems", and one or two from an earlier volume. Contents I Barter Twilight Night Song at Amalfi The Look A Winter Night A Cry Gifts But Not to Me Song at Capri Child, Child

(1884 - 1933) American Poet
I Would Live in Your Love
I would live in your love as the sea-grasses live in the sea,
Borne up by each waves as it passes, drawn down by each wave that recedes;
I would empty my soul of the dreams that have gathered in me;
I would beat with your heart as it beats, I would follow your soul as it leads.
The Kiss
Before you kissed me only winds of heaven
Had kissed me, and the tenderness of rain
Now you have come, how can I care for kisses
Like theirs again?
I sought the sea, she sent her winds to meet me, They surged about me singing of the south I turned my head away to keep still holy Your kiss upon my mouth. And swift sweet rains of shining April weather Found not my lips where living kisses are; I bowed my head lest they put out my glory As rain puts out a star. I am my love's and he is mine forever, Sealed with a seal and safe forevermore Think you that I could let a beggar enter Where a king stood before? Love Songs I have remembered beauty in the night, Against black silences I waked to see A shower of sunlight over Italy And green Ravello dreaming on her height;

Sara Teasdale
    Years ago, suffering from first love lost, I picked up my mother's book of poetry and fell in love with the poems of Sara Teasdale. My mother smiled, seeing in me another woman who believed Sara spoke only to her. And why not? For whom else could the following possibly be written?
    Advice to a Girl
    No one worth possessing
    Can be quite possessed;
    Lay that on your heart,
    My young angry dear;
    This truth, this hard and precious stone,
    Lay it on your hot cheek,
    Let it hide your tear.
    Hold it like a crystal
    When you are alone And gaze in the depths of the icy stone. Long, look long and you will be blessed: No one worth possessing Can be quite possessed. I grew older and as the pain lessened, I forgot the comfort I had found in Sara's poetry and eventually forgot about her. That is, until I "found" her again by accident, browsing on the web, and re-read some of her poems. I felt a wealth of emotions, an intensity I hadn't felt in a long time. Fascinated, I read more, learning about the woman who lived at the turn of the century, through World War I, the 20's and the early thirties. Much of the passion she imbued in her words can be dismissed as facile sentiment. Until you think twice, and the fervor, the very real awareness seeps through your conscious and you vibrate with empathy.
