DINASTIAS WEI, JIN Y SUR Y NORTE (II)

Session 141: Voice Within Voices: Alternating Layers of Discourse in Traditional Chinese Poetics
Organizer: Colin Hawes , University of British Columbia Chair: Xiaoshan Yang , University of Notre Dame Discussant: Alice W. Cheang , University of Notre Dame No writer escapes his or her antecedents. In the Chinese tradition, past literary practices and practitioners are understood to loom particularly large. Overwhelmed by their cultural inheritance, runs the common assumption, classical Chinese authors, far from straining for originality, eagerly sought to "transmit" the received wisdom of their forebears and "return to the ancients." What if this identification with the past—for some authors, or in certain periods, at least—is regarded as a mainly superficial gesture which masks real intentions to clear creative space by subverting powerful predecessors? To what extent can resistance to the pressure of established models, or the anxieties of influence endured by late-born "talents" striving to prove themselves, be gauged? The panel also assesses on the theoretical level the relevance in the Chinese context of such Western perspectives as Harold Bloom’s concept of the "anxiety of influence," and whether the Chinese tradition offers a viable alternative to Freudian-inspired terms.

Organizer: Julia Murray , University of Wisconsin, Madison Chair: Cynthia J. Brokaw , University of Oregon Pauline Lin , Harvard University The Six Dynasties witnessed a rise of villages ( cun his life. Farm life is thus associated with Tao consciously choosing to become who he is. Ironically, later paintings of Tao Qian rarely show the poet in agrarian settings (see Li Xiang, Zhu Derun, Chen Hongshou and others; a notable exception is Li Gonglin’s "Picture of Tao Yuanming Returning to Seclusion" where Tao is depicted in various village settings). How do these painters interpret Tao Qian? Yanzi Jian: A Comparative Study of Its Drama Version and Its Novel Version Jianyu Zhou , National University of Singapore After its publication and ensuing popularity, Yanzi Jian Caizi-jiaren (Scholar-beauty) drama, was revised and published as a novel. As a result, it became one of the Caizi-jiaren novels of the Qing Period. Using the same title and same theme, what differences occurred with the revision from a drama to a novel? Within the tradition of Caizi-jiaren theme, is it representative of the main characteristic transformation of the Ming drama to the Qing novel?

From Baishui Stream Comes the Peach Garden
A Heaven of Peach and Happiness
People have been longing for the Peach Garden since Tao yuanming of the Jin Dynasty. Baishai Stream Scenic Resort, called "Peach Garden in dream and Shangri-la in the world", undoubtedly brings a lovely surprise to tourists from Shanghai, Ningbo, Suzhou and Hangzhou. The resort is situated at the foot of a hill and beside a stream .The beautiful lucid Baishai Stream, running from Yaotou Hill of North Mt.Tianmu , forms a lot of waterfalls and pools in the three-mile "sea of bamboo". The perilous valley, the clean water, the green bamboo and the grotesque stone make up an illusory land close at hand and at the same time as if being cut off from the outside world for ages. Two spots especially d took his whole family there and lived and multiplied on the land ever since. More interesting is that Tao Yuanming was most likely the ancestor of Xi family in Quankeng village according to the author of 500 Mysteries in Chinese Culture. The Wei Book Biography of Sima Rui once recorded that Tao Kan and Tao Yuanming the two celebrities south of the Yangtze River were both from the Xi nationality. The picturesque Baishui Stream Resort, with its rich local flavor and the beautiful scenery everywhere, is waiting for you to uncover her mysterious veil.

Hymn on the Way
Grass and trees have the buddha nature.
They are not different from me.
If I could just be like the grass and the trees,
I'd find the Way in no time.
Men nowadays won't go the Way:
point it out, and they curse it.
A wounded sigh for these folks:
paupers gone begging on a mountain of gold.

Kowtow: To bow; also to wait on others. When the Jin Dynasty poet Tao Yuanming (365-427) was young he was appointed magistrate of Pengze County. He had not been in the postlong when a senior official came to inspect the county. Tao Yuanming’ s aide urged him to make haste and don his best regalia and go out to meet tne visitor. Tao Yuanming thereupon retorted,"I will not dress myself up and kowtow to this pretentious bumpkin just for five dou of rice(referring to his salary as an official)."The very next day, he handed in his official seal and returned home.
