His university career was undistinguished and he obtained his degree only by special exemption. In 1689 he received an appointment as secretary to the statesman Sir William Temple at Moor Park, Surrey. In 1694, having taken holy orders, he became prebend of Kilroot, County Antrim, but soon tired of that isolated life and returned to Moor Park in 1696. He remained there until Temple’s death in 1699, his duties including acting as tutor to the young Hester Johnson (‘Stella’), daughter of a companion of Temple’s sister. Thus began the enduring affection of his life. At Moor Park he wrote A Tale of a Tub, of which he said many years later, ‘What a genius I had when I wrote that Book,’ and The Battle of the Books. Both were published in 1704, anonymously, like most of his writings. In 1700 he was given the vicarage of Laracor near Trim, County Meath, and took his doctor’s degree in TCD in February 1701. Between 1701 and 1710 he divided his time between Dublin and London, where he had some church business for the Archbishop of Dublin. In London he soon made a reputation as a wit and conversationalist. Addison, Congreve and the famous men of the day were his constant companions in the clubs and coffee-houses.

Gulliver's Travels (a first edition is on display in the exhibition). Swift was a clergyman, but his satirical writing against religious corruption prevented his promotion to the highest ranks of the Church. He did not restrict his satire to religion, however, but used it to write powerfully against society's wrongs. The practice of making death masks is thought to date back to the fifteenth century and seems to have served two main purposes. The first of these was the provision of a face for the life-sized wooden effigy of the deceased, which was clothed and carried on the coffin in Royal and State funeral processions. This mask's darkened appearance is the result of an earlier attempt to make it more lifelike through the application of balsam of copaiba. This would initially have been flesh-coloured, but has now discoloured to a dark brown.
