Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900)
The following article was first published in the
Vauxhall Society's Newsletter in April 1979
Arthur Sullivan, who revitalised British music in Queen Victoria's reign was born in Lambeth. His parents, Thomas and Maria, spent their honeymoon in 1838 as the first tenants of No 8 in the newly built Bolwell Terrace. Thomas earned a guinea a week for clarinet playing and paid an annual rent of £22. The first of his two children, Frederic, was born in 1839, and on 13 May 1842 Arthur Sullivan was born. He was christened in St Mary-at-Lambeth and the organ of this church was probably the first he ever played. Bolwell Terrace (later renamed Bolwell Street) was a turning off Lambeth Walk. Part of it was demolished about 1951 and the remainder finally disappeared in the redevelopment of Lambeth Walk in the early 1970s. Until its demolition Sullivan' s house was identifiable by a plaque put up by the Incorporated Society of Musicians. Thanks to Spike Milligan the front door of 8 Bolwell Terrace is preserved in the Museum of London, but the whereabouts of the plaque is unknown. However, Sullivan's early connexion with the neighbourhood was recently revived when Monkton Street SE11 was divided by the building of a new children's home; the eastern end of the street was renamed Sullivan Road (Gilbert Road is on the opposite side of the Lambeth Hospital site). In 1845 Sullivan's father became Bandmaster at Sandhurst Military College, and here Arthur learnt all the instruments he could find. Aged 11, he became a Chapel Royal chorister and lived with his nine fellow choristers at 6 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea. Aged 14, he won the new Mendelssohn scholarship which sent him to the Royal Academy of Music, and later to Leipzig, aged 16. His father's sacrifices enabled him to study for two and a half years in Leipzig, where he was popular but despite being feted, lived a frugal existence. But it was exciting too. Grieg was a fellow-student; he met Liszt; fell in love with both Clara Barnett and her sister Rosamund; and in August 1860 saw the fiercest storm ever experienced in Germany. Sullivan set to work on his Shakespearean "Tempest" music.

The partnership between playwright William Schwenck Gilbert (1836-1911) and composer Arthur Seymour Sullivan (1842-1900) produced, between 1871 and 1896, fourteen comic operas. Some of them remain amongst the most popular of all stage musical productions: The Mikado The Pirates of Penzance H.M.S. Pinafore The Gondoliers and The Yeomen of the Guard Gilbert was a barrister by profession, and many of his stories focus on themes of a legal nature. Even where the theme is not legal, Gilbert often introduced songs dealing with legal subjects. The object of this collection is to bring together those songs which are of most direct interest from a legal perspective.

A USA Films release. 160 minutes. PG Delicious is the word for this labor of love and love for the theater. Delicious like a long, leisurely gourmet meal of "haute cuisine" which lasts for hours, has an unhurried pace, makes time pass most pleasurably, brings in course after course, and progresses with interesting conversations. Writer-director Mike Leigh has carved a special film-niche for himself with very British movies that reveal extraordinary things about ordinary working-class people: High Hopes, Life Is Sweet, Naked, Secrets and Lies, et al. He (and his actors) have been awarded a host of major prizes. And that's not counting Leigh's activities in the theater, and with TV films which also get theatrical releases. In Topsy-Turvy Leigh deals with the team of librettist W.S. Gilbert (1836-1911) and composer Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900) or Sir Arthur after he was knighted in 1883. There's also a third man, impresario-manager D'Oyly Carte (1844-1901).

Following a style of Mendelssohn mixed with Balfe, Wallace, Offenbach, Auber and Adam he was well known for his orchestral music and parlour ballads before the famous partnership with Gilbert was cemented. Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan (1842-1900)
Gilbert and Sullivan first met in 1869. It was a brief and cordial meeting, but of no particular significance to either party. They certainly were well aware of each other, though. William Schwenck Gilbert was, at age 33, regarded as an accomplished and successful playwright and author of humorous pieces published in London by the magazine Fun. Arthur Seymour Sullivan, some six years younger than Gilbert, already had a reputation as Great Britain’s most brilliant young composer. Even as a student he made a splash when, with George Grove, he discovered the score of Schubert’s incidental music to Rosamunde. By 1869 he had already composed a symphony and a cello concerto, and had even written for the theatre (incidental music to Shakespeare’s Tempest and, with librettist Basil Hood, the comic one-act operetta Cox and Box). Two years later, in 1871, Gilbert and Sullivan got together again. Gilbert offered his play Thespis, a parody of the Greek Pantheon set on Mount Olympus. Sullivan was delighted with the wit and originality of the piece, set it to music, and the most enduring collaboration in the history of the English-speaking Theatre was born. Unfortunately, Thespis was a dismal flop, and only the libretto remains today. It is always reported that the score was destroyed in a warehouse fire, but I often wonder if Sullivan might have had a hand in it.

    MASTERS IN COLLABORATION
    Michael Ainger

    Oxford University Press Inc, USA
Hardcover - 544 pages Amazon Price: Book Description
After exhaustive research into the D'Oyly Carte collection of documents, Ainger offers the most detailed account to date of Gilbert and Sullivan's starkly different backgrounds and long working partnership. "A Gilbert is of no use without a Sullivan," W.S. Gilbert once summed his reasons for persisting in his collaboration with Arthur Sullivan despite the combative nature of their relationship. Indeed, Michael Ainger suggests, it is the clash between these two strong personalities that accounts for the success of their work together, as each partner challenged the other to produce his best work. The operas of William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan are a national institution. Hesketh Pearson's biography is of the two men who together formed a famous partnership and he is interested in them as individual, quite different personalities - one of the explanations behind their equally famous quarrel. Pearson describes their lives rather than criticise their works. As the operas such as The Mikado and The Pirates of Penzance live on the stage, here their authors come to life in a biography. Sullivan, Sir Arthur (1842 - 1900)
The name of Sir Arthur Sullivan is indissolubly wedded with that of W.S.Gilbert, with whom he wrote a succession of operettas that have remained a popular part of English national repertoire, for long the sole property of the company founded for their performance by Richard D'Oyly Carte, who later built the Savoy Theatre in London for the performance of what became the Savoy Operas. The national institution that Gilbert and Sullivan have become has drawn attention away from Sullivan's more serious work. Operettas Operettas with words by Gilbert range from Trial by Jury in 1875 to The Gondoliers in 1889, followed in 1893 by Utopia Limited and, in 1896, by the lesser known The Grand Duke. HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, Patience, with its satire on Oscar Wilde, the political satire Iolanthe, The Mikado, Ruddigore and The Yeomen of the Guard, continue to bear witness to the deft and witty music of Sullivan and the comic verbal talents of Gilbert.
