THE MIRACLE WORKER Reviewed by Gail M. Burns, December 2001 "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." Helen Keller (1880-1968) I do not know the context in which Helen Keller made this remark, nor the age at which she made it, but there is no doubt that she could not have made it at all without the aid of Annie Sullivan (1866-1936). Playwright William Gibson is very clear in his introductory remarks to the sequel The Monday After the Miracle that The Miracle Worker is not a play about Helen Keller but a play about Annie Sullivan, her teacher. And yet he is wrong because of the deeply symbiotic relationship between the two women. When they met in 1887 both women desperately needed a miracle to enable their lives to move forward. Seven-year-old Helen was struggling to escape a world of literal darkness and silence. Twenty-year-old Annie was struggling to escape a darkness of the soul inflicted by the poverty and abuse with which she was raised. There could not have been a Helen Keller without Annie Sullivan, but conversely, without someone on which to work her miracle, there could not have been an Annie Sullivan without Helen Keller. This makes for rich theatre, and the Drury Drama Team has jumped in to these deep and treacherous waters feet first with both eyes open. Not only has Gibson created fascinating roles in Helen and Annie, but he has also succeeded in creating a believable family dynamic with Captain Keller; his young adult son by a first marriage, James; his second wife, Helen’s mother, Kate; and the extended family of servants and relatives that surrounded and supported an affluent newspaper editor’s family in Alabama in the 1880’s.

American writer, who proved how language could liberate the blind and the deaf, and remapped the boundaries of sight and sense. Keller became a world-famous inspiration for others. In An Intimate History of Humanity (1994) Theodore Zeldin wrote "no history of the world can be complete which does not mention Mary Helen Keller... whose overcoming of her blindness and deafness were arguably victories more important than those of Alexander the Great, because they have implications still for every living person." "Children who hear acquire language without any particular effort; the words that fall from others' lips they catch on the wing, as it were, delightedly, while the little deaf child must trap them by a slow and often painful process. But whatever the process, the result is wonderful. Gradually from naming an object we advance step by step until we have traversed the vast distance between our first stammered syllable and the sweep of thought in a line of Shakespeare."

(from The Story of My Life Helen Keller was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, as the daughter of Captain Arthur Henley Keller, a cotton plantation owner and the editor of a local newspaper. Helen's mother, Kate Adams Keller, was a Memphis belle who was twenty years younger than her husband. Helen lost her hearing and sight at 19 months of age, but she had learned the meaning of the word "water," and her vision had been excellent. As she grew up, she managed to learn to do tiny errands, but also realized that she was missing something. Keller was sent to a state school for the blind, but failed first grade because she could not read braille. At the age of fourteen she was physically more developed than most of the girls of her age. For medical and cosmetic reasons, her eyes were removed and replaced with glass ones.

Letter to The Curator of the Archives of the Diocese of Springfield, from Marguerite L. Levine, Records Supervisor, AFB/Helen Keller Collections (March 27, 1978)
Transcription March 27, 1978 The Curator
Archives of the Diocese of Springfield
Springfield, Massachusetts 01100 Dear Sir or Madam: The enclosed press release concerning a biography of Helen Keller will, to some extent, explain the reason for my request. Mr. Joseph P. Lash would like to ascertain the date of birth of Joanna Sullivan (1866-1936), daughter of Thomas Sullivan and Alice Chloesy, who at the age of twenty, became Helen Keller's teacher. Joanna, also known as Anne and Annie, was born in Feeding Hills, Massachusetts, presumably on April 16, 1866. Shortly afterward, she was according to her biographer Nella Braddy, "taken to the cathedral in Springfield and christened Joanna." Could you please provide us with an excerpt of the baptismal register concerning Joanna Sullivan and bill the American Foundation for the Blind in my care for this service. Under the terms of her will AFB became the repository of her papers. I look forward to the pleasure of adding this document to her archives. Thank you for your kind assistance with this matter.
