At the time of the first fleets arrival in Australia, not much was known of this strange, vast, hostile country. The government of those early days, encouraged explorations. These explorers were brave and courageous men who undertook the task of mapping this great unknown land. That these explorations were very dangerous is somewhat of an understatement with many of the early explorers dying on their journeys or disappearing in the desert, never to be seen or heard of again. Expansion of the colonies and further settlements owe their existence to these brave men. Listed here are some of the most courageous and famous of Australia's early explorers. George Bass (1771-1803?) and Matthew Flinders (1774-1814) were responsible for exploring the coastline of Australia and proving that Tasmania was, in fact, an island. Flinders named the strait of water separating Tasmania from the continent, Bass Strait, after his companion who was the first to imagine it existed. Flinders later circumnavigated Australia in 1802-1803, proving that Australia was not a series of islands and his charts were extremely accurate, being used for many years. In 1813, three explorers by the names of Gregory Blaxland, William Lawson, and William Wentworth set off to find a way through the Blue Mountains. At this time, the colony of Sydney was continuing to grow and it was urgent that new farming lands be found. Other explorers before them had failed to cross the mountains. Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson succeded on finding that route through the Blue Mountains west of Sydney and settlers could now farm there.

Captain Charles Sturt (1795-1869) noted the occurrence of Swainsona formosa in 1844 while exploring between Adelaide and central Australia, the common name, Sturt's desert pea, commemorates a notable explorer of inland Australia. It is a perennial plant with silky grey-green pinnate foliage. The flowers are about 9 cm long arranged in clusters of six to eight on short, thick, erect stalks. The petals are usually blood red or scarlet with glossy black swelling or 'boss' at the base of the uppermost petal, the standard. It occurs in arid woodlands and open plains and is protected in South Australia.

ROAD TRIP! - Our Trusty Vehicles
On site at Lindon Station after 3 days on (and off) the road To make our way overland through our 3500 km trek, recognizing that at times "roads" would be nonexistent, we leased two four-wheel drive camper vans from Britz. Despite some minor technical glitches: failed electrical system which kept blowing fuses, failed starter (thanks to a helpful "hot wire" from a knowing Aussie we pushed on), unfilled battery cells, broken door key stuck in lock (we became very adept at climbing into the back through a "pass through" behind the cab), just to name a few, we persevered. However, it was those same 24 Volt batteries which we removed and used to power my UMBRAPHILE camera when the 1.2 amp hour gel-cell ones the ones I had brought to OZ from the US failed - so no complaints! Joe Cali made much better time than us in his own four-wheel drive vehicle (left). We thank him for his patience.

HISTORICAL TIMELINE Compiled by Anne Mavric August 26th - The "Endeavour" sailed from Plymouth on her eventful voyage, the Commander, First Lieutenant James Cook (1728-1779) Mariner, accompanied by Zachary Hicks - Second Lieutenant, John Gore - Third Lieutenant, Robert Molineaux - Master and the English botanist Joseph Banks (1743-1820). Cook, son of a farm labourer, was born at Marton-in-Cleveland, Yorkshire, left school at 13, and later became a deckhand in the Baltic and coastal trade, transferring to the Royal Navy as an able seaman in 1755. After only two years he had achieved the rank of Master. In 1758 in the "Pembroke" and later "Northumberland" , he took part in survey work on the Canadian east coast and the action against the French. His map making skills and detailed report of a solar eclipse in 1766 made him favourably known to the Royal Society which invited him through the Admiralty, to take command of a voyage of scientific observation and exploration in the Pacific. The objectives of the expedition, which had been organised by the Royal Society of London and the Admiralty were:

I wish to acknowledge Graeme Furler, the Regional Director of the South Australian Regional Office, for his support and inspiration in the undertaking and compilation of this History of Meteorology in South Australia. This work is part of South Australia's contribution towards the Centenary of Federation, and a tribute to the pioneering work of Sir Charles Todd. I am indebted to John Corbett for proof-reading the text and for helpful suggestions. The support of Alan Kernich (Manager, SA Climate Section) and fellow members of the SA Climate Section is also acknowledged and appreciated. I would like to thank Hank de Wit for additional typographical changes in the HTML version of this document.
    Introduction
Since the Dawn of Time, humans have had to live with their environment and adapt to the vagaries of the ever-changing weather and seasons. Australian Aborigines, during their long existence in the Australian continent, were the first to adapt to the South Australian climate. The arrival of Europeans necessitated the need to gather meteorological data for the setting up of a new society in an unknown environment. The meteorological pioneering work of Colonel William Light, Sir Charles Todd, George Goyder and others made a great contribution to the successful development of South Australia. Following Federation, the first Meteorology Act in 1906 established the Bureau of Meteorology that came into operation on January 1st, 1908. The Bureau has grown steadily to become one of the world's most effective climate and weather service providers.
