83. THE INCONSISTENCY OF NORSE MYTHOLOGY
The origins of the gods and their weaponry varies from poem to poem. Anothersource is a text by a man named Snorri Sturluson (1179 1241).

THE INCONSISTENCY OF NORSE MYTHOLOGY One of the most frustrating aspects of the Norse canon is so little original material is available or has survived. Most of our modern-day knowledge came from small collections of documents. The earliest known text, Tactus' Germania, dates back to the first century A.D. and contains the first documented case of ancient Germanic beliefs. After this is the Codex Regius which consists of twenty-nine poems written around 1270 by unaccredited authors. Soon after this discovery of the Codex Regius in Iceland in 1643, the Arnamagnaean Codex is found (as well in Iceland). This contained five poems similar to those of the Regius but it also contained one new one, " Baldrs Draumar ". This dealt with the god of light. All thirty-four poems were given the title of the Elder Edda or Poetic Edda. Since this is an amalgamation of many poets, who were separated by hundreds of years there are many inconsistencies present in the myths. Even though the poems in the Elder Edda were written by believers in their gods and heroes, characters spring up after they have died out of the blue. Events that have taken place in one poem have yet to take place in another. The origins of the gods and their weaponry varies from poem to poem. Another source is a text by a man named Snorri Sturluson (1179 - 1241). It is entitled the

INTRODUCTION TO THE PROSE EDDA It is a matter of common knowledge that the richest and purest source extant for the ideas and attitude to life of the early Germanic peoples is the literature of Iceland during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. This ancient inheritance is usually regarded as having been slowly destroyed by the impact of Christianity and other foreign influences during the period between the conversion of Iceland (in 1000) and about 1400. This is true enough as far as its beginning and end are concerned, but is far from being the whole story of Old Icelandic literature. Attack and resistance alternate. The literature of thirteenth-century Iceland is much more Icelandic than that of the twelfth, and when Snorri Sturluson's work is considered - and he played the greatest part in this change - it becomes clear that it is not only a question of defense but also of counter-attack. Saga. He is thus the author of four of the most famous books in Icelandic.

Online Medieval and Classical Library Release #15b
(from sunsite.berkley.edu - public domain text) Originally written in Old Norse, app. 1225 A.D., by the poet and historian Snorri Sturluson. English translation by Samuel Laing (London, 1844). The text of this edition is based on that published as "Heimskringla: A History of the Norse Kings" (Norroena Society, London, 1907), except for "Ynglinga Saga", which for reasons unknown is curiously absent from the Norroena Society edition. "Ynglinga Saga" text taken from Laing's original edition (London, 1844). This electronic edition was edited, proofed, and prepared by Douglas B. Killings DeTroyes@AOL.COM , April 1996. Some corrections and "Ynglinga Saga" added courtesy of Ms. Diane Brendan, May 1996 Copied thus far to whisperingstone: CONTENTS
