    68. Whitby England: The Town That Inspired Dracula
On the bench is inscribed The view from this spot inspired Bram Stoker (18471912)”.Stoker visited Whitby several more times over the next few years.
    http://wa.essortment.com/whitbyengland_rbqg.htm
Whitby England: the town that inspired Dracula
Whitby, England is a small fishing village that lies along the edge of the North York Moors at the mouth of the River Esk. The river splits the town into east and west as it slides into the North Sea. Both halves of the fishing port perch atop sheer cliffs overlooking the harbor and the sea beyond; pleasant jumbles of small red-roofed houses line either side of the river, like carelessly tossed dice. It is an ancient village first settled in the 5th or 6th century AD. In 637 AD a Catholic abbey was built nearby that pulled Whitby into history when, in 664 AD, the abbey was the chosen location for the Synod – council – of the Celtic and Roman Catholic Churches to come to an agreement on the celebration date for Easter. In 1077, the abbey was rebuilt in the foreboding gothic style of the medieval time. Now, the abbey ruins brood on the outskirts of Whitby. The commanding presence of towering stone façades pierced with sightless arches can cast the eerie shadow of folklore on even the most unimaginative mind. bodyOffer(25028) It was into this harbor of history and myth that Bram Stoker sailed in 1890. He had been working on a novel inspired by Hungarian adventurer Arminius Vambery who had regaled Stoker with eastern European tales of the blood-hungry living dead. Whitby proved to be the perfect setting for Stoker to derive some of the more intriguing details for his book. He was so impressed by the surrealistic, menacing aspects of the immense stone abbey and St Mary’s Cathedral looming over the small town, that he used Whitby in his novel Dracula as the place where the seductive Count meets and kills Lucy.

    69. Cruden Bay
Count Dracula, the evil bloodsucking vampire, was the creation of Bram (Abraham)Stoker (1847-1912), an Irishman whose literary talents were little recognised

    Around Cruden Bay
    Cruden Bay
Prior to the 19th century Cruden Bay existed only as Ward of Cruden, a tiny fishing hamlet perched under the shadow of Slains Castle. Between 1875 and 1880 the Earl of Eroll, the owner of the castle, built a harbour and, to mark this, Ward of Cruden was renamed Port Eroll. The harbour, however, failed to attract the herring industry to the extent expected as it was tidal and virtually dry at low water. Consequently it was used almost exclusively by small boats catching white fish and shell fish. In August 1897 the Great North of Scotland Railway opened a branch line from Ellon to Boddam which passed alongside Cruden Bay. The company saw potential for developing Cruden Bay as a luxurious holiday resort and built a huge, 55 bedroomed hotel with its own tennis courts, croquet lawns, and bowling green. A championship standard golf course was also opened and an electric tramway, half a mile in length, was built to transport guests to the hotel from the railway station. The Cruden Bay Hotel, as it was named, was the ultimate in luxury but, although profitable in its early years, it soon began operating at huge losses. Its isolated position was heightened when the railway closed in 1932 and, after being requisitioned by the army during the Second World War it was closed and demolished between 1947 and 1952. Today no sign of it remains but it was perhaps instrumental in the renaming of neighbouring Port Eroll to Cruden Bay in 1924 and it certainly encouraged the development of other visitor facilities in the town. Cruden Bay is now a popular resort town whose two miles of sandy beach attracts day-trippers and holidaymakers alike. The golf course continues to flourish and has been recognised as one of the Top 40 courses in Britain.
