Spinoza's leven
(Klik

Benedictus de Spinoza
Biography
Chronology from Middle Tennessee State University Dutch Jewish rationalist. Baruch or Benedict de Spinoza was born in Amsterdam into a distinguished Jewish family, exiled from Spain and living in the relative religious freedom of the Netherlands. He attended the Jewish school, and became learned in the work of Jewish and Arabic theologians. However, contact with dissident Christian movements, and with the with the scientific and philosophical thought of Descartes, led Spinoza to distance himself from orthodox life, and in 1656 he was deemed a heretic, cast out of the synagogue, and cursed with all the curses of the firmament. For a short time Spinoza was exiled from Amsterdam, but he returned and began a life supporting himself by grinding lenses and teaching. In 1660 he moved to Voorburg and then on to the Hague, where he lived with great fugality on a small pension. In 1672 Spinoza undertook a small diplomatic mission to the invading French army, but on his return was under suspicion as a spy, and narrowly escaped being killed by the mob. Spinoza lived out his remaining years in the same frugal state, writing and corresponding. He died of phthisis, possibly brought on by his trade as a lens-grinder. There remain numerous testimonies to his simplicity, virtue, charm, and courage.
Works
After the exile from Amsterdam he returned and wrote the Short Treaties on God, Man, and his Well Being

The Philosophy of
Benedictus de Spinoza
Introduction to the Website
If branches of science are to be characterised by the questions they try to answer, then philosophy surely addresses some of the most fundamental ones a human being can put:
  • is there a (single) reality and how is it constituted? what can I know about it, and how can I be sure of that? what principles should guide my actions?
By the contributions he made to elucidating these questions and to finding some of the answers, Benedictus de Spinoza stands out among the greatest minds of the Western world, indeed of the whole of mankind. He left us only a few works modest in size, but to study them in all their breadth and depth is a lifelong endeavour that leaves little room (and need!) for the study of any other thinker about these fundamental questions. Although the principal work written by Spinoza is entitled Ethica, i.e. mea philosophia that which is what may I expect (hope)? main page . A more extensive catalog is found in the . Although I did not necessarily aim for completeness there, my aspiration is to acknowledge all other serious electronic publishing efforts that are dedicated to Spinoza. I therefore invite any suggestions for additions to my list (by e-mail , preferably).

Life Benedictus de Spinoza is the greatest Dutch philosopher. He was born on November 24, 1632, in Amsterdam and died on February 21, 1677, in The Hague. Spinoza grew up in a Jewish environment, but in the 1650ies he came increasingly into conflict with dogmatic religion. In 1656 he was excommunicated from the Jewish community. Spinoza left Amsterdam, and from 1661 he lived successively in Rijnsburg, Voorburg, and The Hague. (His house in Rijnsburg is now a Spinoza Museum, while his last residence in The Hague has become a Spinoza Reading Room). See Benedictus de Spinoza (1632-1677) from Piet Steenbakkers (in Dutch). Works In the period after he had left Amsterdam, he created his most important works:
    • Renati Des Cartes principiorum philosophiae pars Cogitata Metaphysica (1663), translated in 1664 by Spinoza's friend, Pieter Balling.
