The Life of Horatio Lord Nelson by Robert Southey
BY ROBERT SOUTHEY (1774-1843) TO JOHN WILSON CROKER ESQ., LL.D., F.R.S., SECRETARY OF THE ADMIRALTY; WHO, BY THE OFFICIAL SITUATION WHICH HE SO ABLY FILLS, IS QUALIFIED TO APPRECIATE ITS HISTORICAL ACCURACY; AND WHO, AS A MEMBER OF THE REPUBLIC OF LETTERS, IS EQUALLY QUALIFIED TO DECIDE UPON ITS LITERARY MERITS, THIS WORK IS RESPECTFULLY INSCRIBED BY HIS FRIEND, THE AUTHOR Many Lives of Nelson have been written; one is yet wanting, clear and concise enough to become a manual for the young sailor, which he may carry about with him till he has treasured it up for example in his memory and in his heart. In attempting such a work I shall write the eulogy of our great national hero, for the best eulogy of NELSON is the faithful history of his actions, and the best history must be that which shall relate them most perspicuously.

    Information Lyrics This tune is from The Songs of England (see citation below). It is listed there as A Well There is in the West Country , a Cornish Air. The poem The Well of St. Keyne was written by Robert Southey (1774-1843) and appeared on December 3, 1798 in the London Morning Post. The poem retells the legend of the Well of St. Keyne, which is located in Cornwall. St. Keyne was the daughter of King Broccan. She is reputed to have lived in the sixth century and died a virgin. Her feast day is October 8. Robert Southey was Poet Laureate from 1813-1843. He was born in Bristol, the son of a linen draper. An Uncle sent him to Westminster, but he was expelled in 1792 for protesting the practice of flogging. Southey works include, Joan of Arc The Battle of Blenheim Wat Tyler and A Vision of Judgement (commemorating the death of George III). Another song of the "Battle of the Sexes" is John Grumlie A well there is in the West country,

    MY days among the Dead are past;
    Around me I behold,
    Where'er these casual eyes are cast,
    The mighty minds of old:
    My never-failing friends are they,
    With whom I converse day by day. With them I take delight in weal And seek relief in woe; And while I understand and feel How much to them I owe, My cheeks have often been bedew'd With tears of thoughtful gratitude. My thoughts are with the Dead; with them I live in long-past years, Their virtues love, their faults condemn, Partake their hopes and fears; And from their lessons seek and find Instruction with an humble mind. My hopes are with the Dead; anon My place with them will be, And I with them shall travel on Through all Futurity; Yet leaving here a name, I trust, That will not perish in the dust. Biographical Note on Robert Southey
    Robert Southey was born into humble beginnings on August 12, 1774. His father was a linen draper in Bristol, who disliked his trade and eventually went bankrupt. As a result of the family's financial struggles, Southey was sent to live in Bath with his mother's older half-sister, Elizabeth Tyler, at the age of two. For Southey, life with his Aunt Tyler was both a blessing and a curse. The unmarried Miss Tyler was overbearing and eccentric, but she was financially independent and easily able to raise Southey in the fashionable district of Bath. Moreover, as an avid reader and patron of the theatre, she nurtured young Southey's intellectual development, taking him to stage performances at an early age. Under her influence, Southey began reading Shakespeare and trying to write his own poetry and plays as early as the age of eight.
    The young Robert Southey continued to show great promise, and his family began to nurse aspirations of him joining the clergy. In 1788, Southey entered the Westminster school at the expense of his uncle, the Reverend Herbert Hill. At the time, Westminster was ranked with Eton, and was considered the "gateway" to Christ Church College at Oxford (Bernhardt-Kabish 18). One year after his admission to Westminster, the French Revolution began. Southey was approximately fifteen years old at the time, and like many young people of his day, he passionately sympathized with the high ideals of the French cause. Despite the fact that Westminster's outdated curriculum consisted almost entirely of Latin and Greek, Southey managed to fan his growing radicalism by seeking out works by authors such as Rousseau, Voltaire, and Goethe on his own.
