Melbourne, Florida The phrase American prodigy aptly describes Brother John Philip Sousa.
Two years ago at this time, we paused to reflect on “an entire world free from tyranny and strifea world able to once again enjoy freedom, a world where people are able to resume a normal way of life, free from oppression, able to speak their minds, happy and carefree.” Today, I ask that you join me in a tribute to an American prodigy, Brother John Philip Sousa (1854-1932), a man we have chosen to honor at this Biennial Session since 1997 is the centennial of Brother Sousa’s greatest work, a melody recognized as our National March, “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” Brother Sousa’s musical education began at the young age of seven when he was enrolled in an evening conservatory of music to study the violin. An extraordinarily gifted pupil, Sousa read music on sight with unusual accuracy and had perfect pitch. Encouraged by his father, during the next four years he studied voice, piano, flute, cornet, baritone, trombone and alto horn. At the age of 13, while practicing his violin at home, he was overheard by a circus band leader, who persuaded young Sousa to join the circus. However, the plot was discovered by his father who rose before John’s departure time on that appointed day and escorted him to the Marine Corps headquarters where arrangements had already been made for Sousa to enlist as a “boy” or apprentice in the Marine Corps Band. This was the start of his military career.

Westerville, Ohio Throughout his career as our nation’s leading bandmaster, Brother John Philip Sousa was a fervent patriot.
John Philip Sousa (1854-1932), the man called “March King,” was proud to be a native-born American. And make no mistake that he was also proud to be a Mason. Sousa’s Masonic affiliations aren’t common knowledge, but he entered Masonry at age 26 and was a Master Mason for 51 years. A summary of his Masonic career is seen at the end of this article. Three of his best known marches have Masonic origins: “The Crusader” (1888), “The Thunderer” (1889), and “Nobles of the Mystic Shrine” (1923). He came about petitioning the Craft naturally since his father was a Mason. Also, when Sousa became leader of the United States Marine Band in 1880, he learned the importance of military bandmasters being Masons and took the first steps shortly thereafter. It is interesting that quite a few members of Sousa’s professional civilian band, formed after he left the Marine Corps, were Masons. The percentage increased when Sousa became a Shriner in 1922, and toward the end of his career, nearly half the bandsmen themselves were Shriners. Shrine organizations around the country sponsored many Sousa Band concerts in the late 1920s. Masons in America have traditionally been outspoken on the subject of patriotism, and it could be said that Brother Sousa led one section of that parade. As a matter of record, he probably expressed his patriotism in a more dramatic way than any other composer of any era of any country.

In addition to publishing achievements, Pepper also made history in instrument manufacturing in 1893, when according to John Phillip Sousa, Pepper manufactured the first sousaphone. In Sousa's words, "the Sousaphone received its name through the suggestion made by me to J.W. Pepper , the instrument manufacturer in Philadelphia. ... I spoke to Mr. Pepper relative to constructing a bass instrument in which the bell would turn upwards and be adjustable for concert purposes. He built one and, grateful to me for the suggestion, called it a Sousaphone. It was immediately taken up by other instrument makers..."
United States Marine Band at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco on April 4, 1892. U.S. Marine Corps Picture credit: Drum Corps Digest SOUSA, John Philip (1854-1932). The best-known name in American band music is that of John Philip Sousa. His stirring marches will survive as long as band music is played. During his 12 years as director of the United States Marine Band, he composed 'Semper Fidelis' (1888), 'The Washington Post March' (1889), and 'Liberty Bell' (1893). Altogether he composed about 140 military marches, earning him the title "March King." His most famous work is 'The Stars and Stripes Forever' (1896). He also prepared an official arrangement of 'The Star Spangled Banner' for the Army and Navy. Sousa was born in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 6, 1854, the son of a Portuguese father and a German mother. His father was a trombonist by profession. Sousa showed an early interest in music and started studying violin and trombone. His career as a performer began at age 11, when he played the violin in a dance band. In 1868 he enlisted in the Marine Corps as an apprentice musician. For five years he played with the Marine Band before taking up the violin again as a conductor of theater orchestras. In 1876 he played in the orchestra of the French composer Jacques Offenbach at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. Sousa directed the Marine Band from 1880 until 1892. He then toured the United States and Europe with his own band. Between 1879 and 1915 he wrote several comic operas, of which 'El Capitan' and 'The Bride-Elect' are the best known.

51. Sousa's Song Is Country's National March
John Philip Sousa (18541932). Born in Washington, DC, Sousa was the thirdof 10 children of John Antonio Sousa and Maria Elisabeth Trinkhaus.

Sousa's song is country's national march
By Jennifer Brummett
Staff Writer
A self-styled ``music virtuoso,'' Jimmy Saied of Tulsa, Okla., decided he wanted to do something for the band business when he retired in the early 1980s. He asked National Association of Music Merchants to help promote and financially assist in the hundreds of Sousa concerts being played around the country. Together the group, composed of professional bands and military bands, performed John Philip Sousa concerts, especially with ``Stars and Stripes Forever,'' a well-known Sousa piece. Around 1981, ``bands all across the country that year were playing one Sousa-style concert.'' As part of the celebration of Sousa, Saied suggested his group tried to make the ``Stars and Stripes Forever'' the national march of the United States. ``At all of these concerts around the country, we had people signing petitions,'' Saied said of his move to make the song the national march. ``We had several hundred thousand petitions.'' The NAMM sponsored Saied's drive and eventually he was called to Washington to testify in front of a Congressional committee about why ``Stars and Stripes Forever'' should be the national march. Testifying with him was John Philip Sousa III, who also narrated several concerts for Saied. After much testifying, then-president Ronald Reagan signed ``Stars and Stripes Forever'' as the national march of the United States in December 1977. Why this particular song, one asks?

John Philip Sousa (1854-1932)
John Philip Sousa was the youngest conductor of the U.S. Marine Band and the first conductor who was American born (most people felt that the best musicians were European born). Sousa reorganized the Marine Band and created one of the greatest musical organizations in the United States. In 1892 he formed his own independent band, patterned after Patrick Gilmore 's band. The Sousa Band created the "road trip" and traveled by train all over the United States. The band also toured Europe and other continents. While on tour the band would often perform concerts in two different cities in one day. If they were staying in one city, they might perform three concerts in one day! (And remember, these were 2-3 hour concerts!) Sousa didn't write just marches; he also wrote 3 novels, his autobiograhpy, 15 operettas, 11 suites, 70 songs, 100 plus other instrumental pieces, and he created 200 arrangements and transcriptions of other music. There are MANY great Sousa sites; check out some of these:
