Through our sunless lanes creeps Poverty with her hungry eyes, and Sin with his sodden face follows close behind her. Misery wakes us in the morning and Shame sits with us at night.

Shameless
I wake up Sunday morning. Oh no, it's too early. But it's also too late. If you know what I'm saying. Will I write today or fuck off playing Microsoft Hearts like I did yesterday? God, that was awful. And if I write, what will I write about? There are those of you pressuring me to do a book. Several books, actually. But the one I could almost take seriously would be, like, a memoir. Those are big these days. Stumbling down the stairs to see if I can remember how the coffee maker works, I'm thinking yeah, on days like this that'd be a good plan. Instead of having to worry about what kinda thing would most offend the EGR Irregulars, I could just write about my life. Problem is, I don't have a life.

Beer Dies! in the UK
What two ideas are more inseparable than Beer and Britannia?
Revd. Sydney Smith (1771-1845) First, let's dismiss one imitation Scottish brew: Grant's Scottish Ale is actually brewed in Washington, and doesn't have a product date anyway. Now then. Here are my best shots at the dating systems used by a few British and Scottish breweries. (I've never encountered a beer from Wales or Northern Ireland. Don't they drink there?). Be warned that this page involved more guessing than any other page in Beer Dies! And yet, I'm the best guess you've got. As non-domestic breweries, all companies on this page are assumed to recommend a one year shelf life, until proven otherwise. Also note that dates on this page (unlike most in Beer Dies! ) are calculated from Greenwich Mean Time. Advertisement Sample the world's best beers, chosen for you by the Beer Hunter, Michael Jackson
Bass Brewery
(Staffordshire, England)
Bass Ales have an oddly-formated (for example, 14 H 6 ) production code stamped on the bottle labels. I think that's a bottling date in a "DD M Y" format, which would make today 02 D 3, but I'm still not 100% sure. Bass' manufacturer number is 83820.

SMITH, SYDNEY
See Colonel H. M. Vibart, Richard Baird Smith (1897). With the brilliant reputation that Sydney Smith had acquired in the course of a few seasons in London, he would probably have obtained some good preferment had be been on the powerful side in politics. Sydney Smith’s elder brother “Bobus” had married Caroline Vernon, aunt of the 3rd Lord Holland, and he was always a welcome visitor at Holland House. His Whig friends came into office for a short time in 18o6, and presented him with the living of Foston-le-Clay in Yorkshire. He shrank from this banishment for a time, and discharged his parish duties through a curate; but Spencer Perceval’s Residence Act was - ffudex d.amnatur cum nocens absolvitur. Patrick Duigenan, M.P. for the thy of Arrnagh, a Protestant agitator. had just thrown out the Reform Bill, with Mrs Partington of Sidmouth, setting out with mop and pattens to stem the Atlantic in a storm. Some surprise must be felt now that Sydney Smith’s reputation as a humorist and wit should have caused any hesitation about elevating him to an episcopal dignity, and perhaps he was right in thinking that the real obstacle lay in his being known as “a high-spirited, honest, uncompromising man, whom all the bench of bishops could not turn upon vital questions.” With characteristic philosophy, when he saw that the promotion was doubtful, he made his position certain by resolving not to be a bishop and definitely forbidding his friends to intercede for him.

Sydney Smith
Clergyman, writer, wit and co-founder of the Edinburgh Review . Born in England and educated at Winchester and Oxford, Smith was ordained as a priest in the Church of England in 1794. In 1798 he came to Edinburgh as a tutor, but also studied medicine. In 1802, he proposed the concept of the Edinburgh Review , a quarterly magazine, which he established along with Henry Brougham (1778 - 1868), Francis Horner (1778 - 1817) and Francis Jeffrey (1773 - 1850). The magazine was first published on the 10th October 1802, with Smith editing the first few issues, which were printed by Archibald Constable (1774 - 1827). Smith continued to write for the Review regularly during the following 25 years, contributing greatly to its success and helping make it one of the most influential arbiters of taste in Europe at the time. Smith moved to London in 1803, where he lectured on moral philosophy and became well-known in literary society. He was a kindly man, who always fought for tolerance and reform, regardless of the effect his protests had on his own career. For example, in 1807-8 he wrote supporting Roman Catholic emancipation.

80. The Old Cause By Joseph Stromberg
Sydney Smith (1771 1845) was an Anglican minister chiefly remembered, not for hiscontributions to ecclesiastical management or theology, much less orthodoxy

SYDNEY SMITH: A POUND OF MOTHERWIT AND AN OUNCE OF CLERGY
S As his literary biographer, Hesketh Pearson , remarks, the main problem in reconstructing Smith's sayings (much less his world outlook) is that he lacked a Boswell to follow him around and write down his every word. His friends and acquaintances were generally too overcome with laughter to reconstruct exactly what he had said. We are thus left with Smith's published writings, letters, and the testimony of those souls who could remember what he said. At a time when ecclesiastical preferment depended on never offending anyone important and not expressing views likely to be controversial, Sydney Smith spoke his mind, delighting many and alarming others, and thereby assured that he would never be a bishop in the Church of England. As a result, he moved around from parish to parish, with each church "living" a little better than the last, and became, in the end, financially comfortable. (Having well-placed friends among the Whigs did that much for him, at least.)
