Parallels in Ellen White's and Joseph Smith's Writings
Both Part of New England "Visionary Culture"?
JAMES WALTERS
Parallels between the writings of Adventism’s Ellen White (1827-1915) and Joseph Smith(1805-1844), founder of Mormonism, have been discovered by Phyllis Watson of Angwin, California. Although Watson believes her parallels demonstrate literary dependency, several American church historians and the White Estate, who were given a 32-page sample of Watson’s 300 page manuscript, disagree. They see the most likely explanation to be what one historian called "common milieu"—a similar religious background and place. Indeed, Richard Lyman Bushman, a devout Mormon and leading scholar in Mormon studies at Columbia University, now believes that Ellen White should be added to the dozen or so New England visionaries he has studied who published accounts of their experiences in the first half of the 19th century. Bushman speaks of a "visionary culture" that prophetic figures such as Smith and White inhabited. "When people spoke of visionary experiences, there was a style they adopted, just as political scientists or fashion columnists or dance critics have a common vocabulary today," says Bushman. "That does not mean the experiences were the same or of equal validity."
A Prod to American Church Historians
Watson, a layperson, hopes that the parallels she has documented will prod professional church historians and theologians to action. Her hopes will likely be realized.

    D. Michael Quinn, The Mormon Hierarchy: Origins of Power (Salt Lake City: Signature Books, 1994), xv + 685, photos, notes, appendices, index, ISBN 1-56085-056-6 This is arguably the most important new book on Mormonism in half a century, since Fawn Brodie's landmark biography of Joseph Smith, Know Man Know's My History (1945). Quinn's subject is the evolution and function of the Mormon ecclesiastical and theocratic hierarchy during the lifetime of its founder Joseph Smith (1805-1844), through the transfer to Utah in 1847 following his assassination. (A second volume due out in 1996 will carry the story down to the present.) Although not as overtly damaging as Brodie's work, it will be harder for Mormons to dismiss this book's deeply disturbing implications because of its more dispassionate style. The book's author , D. Michael Quinn, is a deeply pious

Definition: Officially known as Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the Mormon church was established by Joseph Smith (1805-1844) in 1830 in upstate New York, then again in 1831 in Ohio after he was forced to move. During his lifetime he was not able to create a permanent home for his followers, and after his death most took the long journey to Utah under the leadership of Brigham Young (1805-1877), where they founded Salt Lake City and created a home. Mormon doctrines are based upon the Book of Mormon The Doctrine and Covenants , and The Pearl of Great Price , all the product of communication with God and all of which are regarded as scripture on an equal level with the Bible.

The conduct of the founders of the major religions that were birthed in America would not be welcomed by their followers of today. Their extreme drive and genius were accompanied by conduct outside the precepts that undergird the religious institutions they created. Joseph Smith (1805-1844) was a magnetic leader, carrying his Mormon flock through mass migrations and rebirth in Ohio, Missouri and Illinois. Setting aside judgment on his constant claim of communication with God, we can be struck by his genius in gathering and maintaining the adulation of thousands in a short and openly self-indulgent life. His positive attributes of character were marred by obsessions in sexuality, vanity and autocratic control. He may have had as many as fifty wives, according to eminent biographer Fawn M. Brodie in her definitive classic No Man Knows My History: The Life of Joseph Smith (Random House, 1995). The "wives" were almost always episodes of adultery, usually preceded by a ceremonial "seal for eternity," whereas the original primary husbandincluding many of Smith's associateswas sealed only for life. Smith acquired a new one on average almost monthly during the 1840s. This was the birth of the half-century of officially sanctioned polygamy in the Mormon Church. The Mormons' diligence, growth and political solidarity under Smith's directives created fears and enmity wherever they were. They also had militia units. Smith was killed by a mob who stormed the jail in Carthage, Illinois, on June 27, 1844. His followers were forced from nearby Nauvoo, and Brigham Young led an epic ordeal to Utah. Brodie states: "And it was the legend of Joseph Smith, from which all evidences of deception, ambition and financial and marital excesses were gradually obliterated, that became the cohesive force within the church."

    • Founded by Joseph Smith (1805-1844) Book of Mormon published in 1830 Church of Jesus Christ established April 6, 1830 Name changed to Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints 1837 As of 1998, the Church had 10,354,241 members. Members in the United States totaled 5,023,158.
Text they base their validity from: John 10:16 "Other sheep I have, which are not of this fold." Supposedly this refers to a Middle Eastern civilization that migrated to the Americas called the Nephites. Christ appeared to them after His resurrection and preached to them,. The Bible is the Word of God only "as far as it has been translated correctly." They also claim the Book of Mormon to be the sealed scroll mentioned in Isaiah 29 and to be superior to the Bible, being the final authority when the Book of Mormon contradicts it.
