JOSEPH SMITH
Founder of The Mormons, born in Sharon , Vermont. He received his first "call' as a prophet at Manchester, New York, in 1820. Smith said he was told of a sacred religious record on golden plates, with two stones which would help to translate it, and in 1827 this was delivered into his hands. The Book of Mormon (1830) is said to contain a history of the 5th century of the Christian era, written by a prophet named Mormon, during which Jesus Christ appeared and established his Church in the New World. Smith claimed to have received authority from John the Baptist and the apostles to be the instrument of the Church's re-establishment. Despite ridicule and hostility, the new "Church of the Latter Day Saints" rapidly gained converts. He founded Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1840, becoming mayor. Violence followed his announcement as a candidate for the US presidency. He was imprisoned for conspiracy and killed by a mob which broke into the jail in Carthage, Illinois, where he and his brother Hyram were awaiting trial.

He lived here when he was nineteen to twenty-two years old. Joseph Smith, Jr. (1805-1844), often referred to as the Prophet Joseph Smith, was the founding prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Latter-day Saints call him "the Prophet" because, in the tradition of Old and New Testament prophets, he depended on revelation from God for his teachings, not on his own learning. They accept his revelations, many of them published as the Doctrine and Covenants and as the Pearl of Great Price, as scripture to accompany the Bible. As a young man, Joseph Smith also translated a sacred record from ancient America known as the Book of Mormon. These revelations and records restored to the earth the pure gospel of Christ. Joseph Smith's role in history was to found the Church of Jesus Christ based on this restored gospel in preparation for the second coming of Christ. 26. Joseph Smith And Mormonism
The Church of Jesus Christ of LatterDay Saints (with headquarters in Salt LakeCity, Utah), was officially founded in 1830 by Joseph Smith, Jr. (1805-1844).
http://quitplaying.com/~neirror/neirr.org/informermaylds.htm
August 2001: An e-publication of the New England Institute for Religious Research Religion "Made in America" The Paradox of Joseph Smith and Mormonism Mormonism, known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (with headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah), was officially founded in 1830 by Joseph Smith, Jr. (1805-1844). While living in Palmyra New York, Smith claimed at the age of 15 to have had a personal visit from God, who introduced him to Christ. Jesus supposedly told him not to join any church because they were "all wrong ... all their creeds were an abomination in His sight, and that those professors (Christians) were all corrupt" (Pearl of Great Price, Joseph Smith, 2:18-19). Smith was allegedly told by God that he was chosen to restore the true church that the apostles had founded, and to bring to light "many plain and precious" truths of the scriptures that had been altered or expunged from the Scriptures. Three years later, Smith claimed that he was visited by the angel "Moroni" who revealed to him the whereabouts of certain plates of gold which were alleged to be the scriptures and sacred writings of the inhabitants of the Americas. Smith unearthed the plates, and in 1827 began the process of translating them from a language he called "Reformed Egyptian" to English. Thus, from this, he produced the Book of Mormon, which was published in 1830.

Joseph SMITH
Smith, Joseph (1805-1844) , American religious leader, who was the founding prophet of Mormonism. Smith was born of poor parents in Sharon, Vermont, on December 23, 1805. The family moved near the town of Palmyra, in upstate New York, where between the ages of 14 and 25 Smith experienced visions calling him to restore the true Christian religion. According to his account, an angel guided him to a set of golden plates buried in a hill near the Smith farm; these contained a narrative written in a hieroglyphic script, which he translated, "by the gift and power of God." The result was published in 1830 as the Book of Mormon, which he believed to be a religious record of the ancient inhabitants of North America.
The church Smith founded on April 6, 1830, soon known officially as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, quickly attracted followers, many of whom served as lay missionaries. It also aroused opposition, with Smith as its focus. He suffered a violent tarring and feathering in Ohio and a jail term of several months in Missouri. After establishing a new headquarters at Commerce (which they renamed Nauvoo), Illinois, in 1839, Smith continued to provide charismatic leadership. Soon, however, rumors, later confirmed, that the Mormons had begun to practice polygamy provoked a schism in the Mormon community and intensified the opposition outside the church. Smith himself is believed to have had more than 27 wives, although he publicly acknowledged only one.

The Community of Christ was formerly known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints the " RLDS Church ". They were organized on 1860-APR-6 in Amboy, IL. Their head office moved several times and finally settled in Independence MO in 1920. They do not refer to themselves as "Mormons" a term long associated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints because of the term's association with polygamy and because they believe the name was not part of the original church. Their temple was dedicated in Independence MO in 1994. They also maintain the original temple in Kirtland OH as a historical site. They have about 250,000 members in congregations in almost 40 countries worldwide. Their official web site is at: http://cofchrist.org/
Comparisons Between the CofC and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS, Mormons) and the CofC are the two largest denominations in the Christian Restorationist movement. These denominations believe that the true Christian church died out in the early 2nd Century CE, and was restored by Joseph Smith's ordination and his subsequent founding of the restorationist movement. The largest denomination is the LDS at about 10 million members; the second largest is the CofC at about 1/40th of that size.

CHURCH HISTORY
Click Here to Visit our Sponsors. The Mormons have had a fascinating and turbulent history. Its founder was Joseph Smith (1805-1844), a resident of Palmyra NY. His family of origin were called " Seekers " - Christians who were not affiliated with a church, but which respected the teachings of all denominations. In his teens, his mother and most of the rest of the family converted to Presbyterianism. However, Joseph was deeply troubled by the multiplicity of Christian sects which existed in his time. In common with many Christians before and since, he wondered which was the "true" Christian religion . He received his first vision in 1820, at the age of 14 in Palymra, NY. God and Jesus Christ appeared before Joseph as separate entities and told him that all of the Christian sects and denominations were in error and that he should not join any of them. However, he should anticipate a major personal assignment in the future. In 1823, at the age of 17, he received three visitations from Moroni (some texts say Nephi) at the time of the

The History of the Church.
An Introduction and Notes by B. H. Roberts Seven Volumes Background The above background was written by a professor at BYU where I copied the scans of the History of the Church . Two weeks after I started posting the History History of the Church History of the Church History of the Church No, the main reason for publishing the History of the Church is to show the deception of the leaders of the LDS Church. What you will witness in this edition is extent the leaders of the LDS Church has gone to hide and deceive its own people and others about the beginning of the Church. First, I give you a good overview of these deceptions by reprinting Chapter 7 of by Jerald and Sandra Tanner. Then using their (The Tanners) book History of the Church itself. Vol. 1 and half of Vol. 2 with be the most complete in showing the changes, because I did have access to the Times and Seasons which is where these volumes were first publish. After that the History of the Church was published until completed in the Millennial Star History of the Church in a straight forward manner, I place no comments in the text of the books themselves and have have left them as you would see them on the printed page. I added links to the footnotes place by the Church Historians for easy viewing, they appear in their original numerical order and look like this

Growing out of the visions and revelations of Joseph Smith, Jr. [1805-1844], the Church was officially organized on 6 April 1830 following the translation and publication of the Book of Mormon and the restoration of heavenly authority deemed necessary to perform the saving ordinances. Central to these claims was the importance of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, whose prophet once again revealed heaven's will to all who would listen. Such audacious claims early aroused anger and even violence against those who chose to follow Joseph Smith. Mormons were persecuted in New York, Ohio, Missouri and in Illinois during the formative years of their history. The growing opposition in western Illinois led to the murder of Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum in June 1844, and further confrontations forced Mormon leaders to decide to abandoned Nauvoo and to migrate into the American West. This exodus began in February 1846 under the direction of Brigham Young and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles who had assumed leadership of the Church following Joseph Smith's death.
