Being held in association with MISTA 2003. However, this is a separate event and you can register for one without registering for the other.
    Sponsored By
On Tuesday 12th August 2003, just before the MISTA conference, there is a tutorial day that will allow leading reseachers to present some of the modern optimization techniques that are being used today. Each tutorial will last one and a half hours. The tutorials are being aimed at a level applicable to students in the first year of their PhD and, as such, will be applicable to many people including those from industry, researchers who do not work in this field but who wish to find out more about these techniques, as well as those working in the field who, perhaps, need a refresher.
The running order for the day can be seen here. Registration details can be seen here . Student Bursaries can be seen here There there also be a book from the event, which we hope will be published about one month after. This book will have a chapter for each speaker/author. The book will be published by Kluwer.

Glover Archibold Park, next to Casey Mansion site Nearly 17 acres on Foxhall Road are not enough for the Casey Mansion Foundation (CMF) to build the mayor’s mansion it has offered the D.C. government, so the foundation is trying to add four more acres of pristine National Park Service (NPS) parkland. The portion of Whitehaven Parkway, open to the public for more than half a century, stretches from Foxhall Road at Whitehaven Parkway to Glover Archbold Park. Community opposition is growing to an agreement between CMF and NPS, which would yield title to the Federal parkland to the foundation. CMF plans to erect an eight foot high steel fence and build a large guardhouse, up to 1,000 square feet, and a secure entrance on this hilly, wooded land. But the Mayor’s Official Residence Commission, headed by the former Mayor Walter Washington, studied Casey’s offer for a mansion on the original foundation-owned tract, concluded: "The proposed site and building are large enough to accommodate all reasonable security concerns."

Arnett asked that there be a solid commitment to have this as an agenda item at the next meeting. Council agreed. Council briefly discussed how and when resumes could be shared with the public. Horn suggested that the issue be resolved before Council accepts resumes from potential Village Manager candidates. Dearth of a Nation by Tim Slowinski
Confessions of a Flying Monkey Let me just start out by saying, I've never been a friend of Dorothy. Not that there's anything wrong with that... It's been said that I will fuck anything that casts a shadow and, with very few exceptions (camels smell bad and baboons creep me out... ), that's absolutely true. I may have chosen a man as my present confrere and bedfellow, but there never was and never will be a yellow brick road in this sensual pilgrim's life. I'd like to say the reason is simple, but it isn't. Nothing ever really is. Instead, a little background is in order.
The fact is, I became sexually active at a very young age, thanks to an overzealous and much older male cousin. Far from being scarred by the experience, however, I took what he taught me and ran with it. Maybe that's why when, at a time when most of my friends were just getting an idea of what sex was all aboutwhile talking about growing up to be firemen, astronauts or superheroesI was well ahead of the game. I knew what I wanted to be and it had nothing to do with your standard run-of-the-mill male icon. I wanted to be the personification of sex. Not male sex. ALL sex.
I was a voracious reader even then. By the time of my forced sexual awareness, I had already devoured Tolkien, Burroughs, Wells and dabbled in the best science fiction and fantasy of the day. Most of it bored me, as did the superhero comics (spandex and bulging muscles aside) my friends had become addicted to. I couldn't explain my dissatisfaction, I just knew that something was missing from those chaste morality tales which passed for imaginative entertainment.

Lawrence, Kansas - 3/26/2003 CNAH COMMON NAMES LIST SIXTH EDITION SCHEDULED
The Center for North American Herpetology is pleased to announce that funding for the sixth edition of "Standard Common and Current Scientific Names for North American Amphibians, Turtles, Reptiles, and Crocodilians" by Joseph T. Collins and Travis W. Taggart has been secured. We anticipate that the sixth edition will appear in Spring 2004.
Copies of current fifth edition, which appeared in 2002, will be exhausted by Fall 2003. The new sixth edition is planned both because of the large number of taxonomic changes that have occurred since September 2002 and because of those that will occur in the next twelve months.
Users of the CNAH list should continue to monitor the foundation's web site, in order to be kept abreast daily of the proposed taxonomic changes to the North American herpetofauna. This service is available for North America only on the CNAH web site.
Individuals wishing to obtain a printed copy of the fifth edition should go to
